Thanks for the fix. Mapping with MAP_FIXED_NOREPLACE where the arena chose the address is the right fix for #533. I tested the PR locally (Fedora 44, kernel 7.2.5 without la57, MPICH 5.0.1): autotest.py passes 23 of 23 in both modes. I'd like a few changes, see the inline comments.

When MAP_FIXED_NOREPLACE fails with EEXIST, the range stays in free_blocks. So next_free_addr() returns the same address again, and every later arena mmap that gets it fails too.
This also happens without a huge request: realloc grows a large block in place with mremap, which the wrapper does not see (#539). Locally (1 rank), after malloc(64 MiB) and realloc to 128 MiB, each later mmap(256 MiB) returns MAP_FAILED with this PR, until the block is freed.
Could the wrapper, on EEXIST, read /proc/self/maps, remove the mappings that overlap the candidate from free_blocks, and try the next fit? A request that is too large then still fails, if the top free block ends at the first mapping above the arena (the lower half's) and not at SIZE_MAX / 2 (line 224). Otherwise, on la57, the next fit can be above 2^47.

Done. On EEXIST, the wrapper removes the mappings over the candidate (from /proc/self/maps) from free_blocks and tries the next fit. The free block now ends at the first mapping above the arena, so mmap(2^48) still fails, also after a restart. After your malloc(64 MiB) and in-place realloc to 128 MiB, mmap(256 MiB) succeeds and the block stays intact.

This raises max_allocated_addr also when the mapping then fails. After a failed malloc(2^48), it is about 256 TiB above the arena, so the check at line 405 no longer sends a caller's MAP_FIXED above the arena into the arena. Locally, mmap(0x700000000000, ..., MAP_FIXED) is redirected into the arena before the failed request, and placed at 0x700000000000 after it.
About the PR description: this value does not affect the restart. The restarted lower half starts with a new max_allocated_addr, and restore_mmap() sets it from the restored areas.
Please raise it only after the mapping succeeds.

Done: it is raised only after the mapping succeeds. Your MAP_FIXED case is now redirected both before and after a failed malloc(2^48). You're right about the restart; I removed that from the description.

mmap_fixed_noreplace() in lower-half/mmap-fixed-noreplace.c already does this, and it is linked into the same binary (reserve_memory_areas() uses it). It checks once if the kernel supports the flag, works when the header does not define MAP_FIXED_NOREPLACE, and fails with EEXIST. Here, without the macro, the #ifdef removes the fix and the arena still maps with MAP_FIXED.
Could you call it here? That also removes the second change of flags and the } else across #endif.

Done. The wrapper calls it, and its declaration moved from lower-half.cpp to mem-wrapper.h.

Two problems with this call:
- Under MANA, it moves the rest of the test off the upper half's heap. The process has DMTCP's checkpoint thread, so glibc retries the failed request in a new arena and keeps that arena for the thread. Locally,
malloc(64)returns 0x82c6eb40 (theuhSbrk()heap) before this call and 0x108c000880 (a new 64 MiB heap) after it. So the loop no longer checks the heap across checkpoints. - With 4-level paging, 2^48 is more than
TASK_SIZE, and the kernel refuses it before it unmaps anything. Main passes too (locally, without la57), so this catches A malloc that cannot be satisfied crashes under MANA: the lower half's mmap wrapper maps with MAP_FIXED over memory it assumes is free #533 only on la57 machines.
A direct mmap goes through the same wrapper and does not change the arena. It fails in every case (natively, the kernel keeps it below 2^47; under MANA, it reaches past the lower half), so the test can check that. With this, memory passes locally under MANA (3 cycles) and natively. The comment at the top of the file would then say mmap().

| // compiler cannot drop the call. | |

The lower half's mmap wrapper puts the upper half's mappings in an arena
recorded as one free block, {arena_base, SIZE_MAX / 2}, and maps there
with MAP_FIXED. A request that reaches past the lower half replaced the
lower half's and the stack's mappings, and the process crashed in malloc
instead of getting NULL.
Map with mmap_fixed_noreplace() where the wrapper chose the address; a
caller's MAP_FIXED is unchanged. On EEXIST, the mappings over the
candidate (from /proc/self/maps) leave free_blocks and the next fit is
tried, so a mapping the wrapper did not make, such as a block that
mremap() grew (mpickpt#539), does not fail later requests. The free block
ends at the first mapping above the arena, so a request too large for
it fails with ENOMEM. max_allocated_addr is raised only after the
mapping succeeds.
memory now starts with a 256 TiB mmap, which must fail.
Fixes mpickpt#533.

Continue past 16 stale candidates.
A direct mremap growth can leave multiple occupied ranges in free_blocks. After 16 EEXIST responses, arena_mmap returns ENOMEM without trying a later fitting range. Continue while each EEXIST removes an overlapping mapping, and stop when pruning makes no progress.

Valid. With 16 tries, 60 mappings that the wrapper did not make, 32 MiB apart, make mmap(64 MiB) fail with ENOMEM (Hercules, 10 of 10).
Retrying while pruning makes progress would rescan /proc/self/maps once per such mapping, without a bound. A better fix rescans once per EEXIST, removes every mapping from free_blocks, and keeps a small cap (8). That case then passes 10 of 10, with one rescan (about 1.2 ms).
With threads, though, it needs #543's lock: without it, mmap_threads hangs instead of failing. So I'm waiting for #543 before changing this.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
@pera-noaa Thanks for the test results and guidance. My suggested unbounded retry loop could require too many /proc/self/maps scans.
Your approach addresses that problem: after each EEXIST, scan all mappings and remove every occupied range from free_blocks. Keep the retry cap at 8 to bound the work.
Waiting for #543’s lock is appropriate given the reported mmap_threads hang. This finding remains open pending that dependency and the allocator change.

Learning: In mpickpt/mana, mpi-proxy-split/lower-half/mem-wrapper.cpp implements arena_mmap in C++. For EEXIST recovery, prefer one complete /proc/self/maps scan that removes all occupied ranges from free_blocks, with a bounded retry count, rather than unbounded retries that prune only mappings overlapping each candidate. Concurrent allocator bookkeeping needs synchronization; the author reports that mmap_threads hangs without the lock associated with #543.
