Fixes#539. The lower half's wrappers of mmap and munmap keep the arena's lists of free and allocated blocks, which the checkpoint uses to save the upper half's memory, but mremap went to the kernel directly. glibc's realloc of a block that malloc mapped calls mremap. The kernel then grew the mapping into a range that the free list still listed, or moved it outside the arena, and the allocated list kept the old size. With #537, a later mmap no longer overwrites the grown range, but a restart still lost it: the job crashed with SIGSEGV when it read the grown half.
2 commits:
Add wrapper for mremap: mremap_wrapper() grows or shrinks a mapping in place only when the free list says the range is free, where the kernel never replaces a mapping. Otherwise, with MREMAP_MAYMOVE, it reserves a new range with arena_mmap() and moves the mapping onto it with MREMAP_FIXED, which replaces only the reservation. Then it updates both lists. patchLibc() makes the upper half libc's mremap jump to it. It finds mremap as it finds mmap and munmap, through a new helper, libc_symbol_offset(), which holds their lookup and its fallback to libc's debug file.
Add a test of realloc growing a block: realloc_grow grows one 64 MB block to 128 MB in place, maps 256 MB after it, and grows another 64 MB block that must move. Each iteration checks the blocks and the mapping across checkpoints and restarts.
Notes for review
A call with MREMAP_FIXED goes to the kernel as it is, as the mmap wrapper does for a caller's MAP_FIXED. With MREMAP_DONTUNMAP, the old range stays in the allocated list.
On failure, errno is set in the lower half's TLS, as in the other wrappers, so the caller does not see it.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Memory allocations can now grow within the configured arena when space permits, or move to another available range when needed and allowed.
Successful growth preserves existing data and avoids overlapping other mappings. Requests for fixed addresses and operations outside the configured arena continue to use the system’s standard memory mapping behavior.

Ordinary realloc growth has no established failure, but direct mremap callers can receive incorrect error information or flag-dependent results. These bounded API compatibility issues warrant owner awareness and correction.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Directly linked issue #539 has one coding objective: route upper-half libc mremap to a lower-half wrapper so arena free and allocated lists stay correct when realloc grows or moves an mmap-backed block.
Evidence at head (diff against merge base aa06a9e):
patchLibc() now resolves mremap through libc_symbol_offset() and installs a trampoline to mremap_wrapper(). This matches the existing mmap and munmap handling (#539, mem-wrapper.cpp).
__mremap_wrapper() grows in place only when is_free_range() confirms the new range is in free_blocks. Otherwise it fails rather than replacing a mapping, unless MREMAP_MAYMOVE is set.
With MREMAP_MAYMOVE, the wrapper reserves a range with arena_mmap(), then moves the mapping there with MREMAP_MAYMOVE | MREMAP_FIXED. The kernel therefore replaces only the arena reservation. The block stays inside the arena, as #539 requires. The issue suggests taking the address from next_free_addr(). The reservation path reaches the same arena-placement goal.
On success, the wrapper removes the old range from allocated_blocks and merges it into free_blocks, unless MREMAP_DONTUNMAP keeps it. It merges the new range into allocated_blocks and removes it from free_blocks. It also advances max_allocated_addr.
The test realloc_grow covers the reproducer pattern: in-place growth, a later mapping, and a growth that must move. The PR reports passing runs on both polling and blocking modes.
Limits of this review: the arena_mmap() source was not inspected within the inspection budget. On the failure path after a successful reservation, if the MREMAP_FIXED call fails, the wrapper calls _real_munmap() directly. This does not update the block lists. Whether arena_mmap() already added the reservation to allocated_blocks was not verified. This affects error handling only, not the success-path requirement of #539.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
All changed files connect to #539 or to its test coverage:
mem-wrapper.cpp: adds _real_mremap, mremap_wrapper(), __mremap_wrapper(), and is_free_range(). These implement the #539 fix. The wrapper follows the same signal-blocking and lock sequence as mmap_wrapper() and munmap_wrapper().
mem-wrapper.cpp: extracts libc_symbol_offset() from the existing mmap and munmap lookup code. patchLibc() uses it for mmap, munmap, and mremap. This is a refactor that supports the new trampoline. Behavior for mmap and munmap is unchanged.
test/realloc_grow.c, test/Makefile, test/autotest.py: add a regression test and register it in the E2E suite. This supports the #539 behavior.
Notes that do not make a change out of scope: MREMAP_FIXED calls pass to the kernel without arena bookkeeping. The PR documents this, and it matches the existing handling of caller MAP_FIXED in the mmap wrapper. Under this design, a caller using MREMAP_FIXED to target arena blocks can bypass the free and allocated lists. This is a design trade-off, not an unrelated change.

Check the original block before and after the first realloc.
The first block's contents are never written before realloc(p, 2 * BLOCK). The next access to the grown block is fill(q, 2 * BLOCK, base), which overwrites the whole range. No check reads q before that overwrite, so content lost during in-place growth would not be detected. The moved-block path already writes its block before realloc and checks it afterward. Applying the same pattern to the in-place path closes the gap.

and subsequent fill unchanged.
73-75: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Heavy lift
Cover the in-place growth path in the first realloc check.
The test header says the first realloc grows the block in place. Line 74 checks only q != NULL, and every later check uses the returned q. A moved block therefore passes the whole test, so the test does not exercise the in-place growth path it describes.
Removing the in-place prose does not close this gap. It only makes the header match the test, and the in-place bookkeeping stays untested.
A q == p assertion is not yet safe. In the mremap wrapper's in-place branch, the block grows in place only when is_free_range holds for the range above it. Otherwise, with MREMAP_MAYMOVE, the mapping moves. The test does not establish that the range above p is free at its first malloc. Add a pointer-equality check only after the test establishes that placement precondition. Do not add an unconditional q == p check.

The lower half's wrappers of mmap and munmap keep the arena's lists of
free and allocated blocks, which the checkpoint uses to save the upper
half's memory. However, mremap went to the kernel directly. glibc's
realloc of a block that malloc mapped calls mremap, and the kernel
grew the mapping into a range that the free list still listed, or
moved it outside the arena. So a later mmap could take the grown
range, and a restart lost it, because the allocated list still had the
old size (mpickpt#539).
mremap_wrapper() grows or shrinks a mapping in place only when the
free list says the range is free; the kernel never replaces a mapping
there. Otherwise, with MREMAP_MAYMOVE, it reserves a new range with
arena_mmap(), which never maps over an existing mapping, and moves the
mapping onto it with MREMAP_FIXED. With MREMAP_DONTUNMAP, it always
moves the mapping, and the old range stays allocated. A call with
MREMAP_FIXED, with flags that the wrapper does not know, or before the
arena exists, goes to the kernel as it is. Then the old range goes
back to the free list, and the new one joins the allocated list.
patchLibc() makes the upper half libc's mremap jump to the wrapper.
It finds mremap as it finds mmap and munmap, through the new
libc_symbol_offset(), which holds their lookup.
The new test realloc_grow grows a 64 MB block to 128 MB in place, maps
256 MB after it, and grows another 64 MB block that must move. Each
iteration checks the blocks and the mapping across checkpoints and
restarts. Without the previous commit, the first restart crashed with
SIGSEGV on the grown half of the block.
On the two nitpicks for realloc_grow.c: the first block is now filled before the realloc and checked after it (e2b69b0). On the in-place path: under MANA, the arena places the first 64 MB block at its top, so the wrapper grows it in place; a test program printed p == q in 3 of 3 runs. Natively, glibc moves it, so the test cannot assert q == p without failing natively.
