Summary

  • When an assembly's public API changes, compile-check now compiles only the dependents that write one of the names the change touches. Every other dependent is left out, the way it is when the API did not change.
  • A change no name can tell (an operator, a base type, an abstract member added, a member C# binds by pattern, and the like) still compiles every dependent.
  • Builds on feat: compile-check learns which names a public API change touches #3347, which supplies the names.

User Impact

Before: adding a public property to an assembly that 67 others reference compiled all 67, on a project with 561 assemblies. That took about 28 seconds, of which about 18 were the dependents.

After: only the dependents that write the changed type's or member's name compile. In measurements on that project:

  • a specific type or member name is written by 0 to 2 of the 67 dependents;
  • the expected time for such an edit is 12 to 15 seconds instead of 28.

Some edits are not faster, but nothing is missed:

  • short common names (written by about 50 of the 67);
  • constructors (target-typed new( is written by 59);
  • changes to a type's shape.

Changes

  • The identifiers of every unit that references another unit of the plan are read as the run starts:

    • cut by the characters C# allows (a letter, letter number or _, then also digits, combining and spacing marks, connectors and formatting characters, the last left out of the name), with comments and strings included;
    • plus new( for a target-typed new;
    • also the generator output the unit's last full compile saved. That output is read before any compile starts, because a unit's compile removes and rewrites it; only the sources, which nothing removes, are read in the background.
    • A unit whose sources cannot be read, or that has none, has no index and compiles on any change.
  • When a reference becomes final, each unit reading it learns whether the verdict touches it:

    • never when kept;
    • always when the change is unnamed, when nothing compared the reference, or when the unit has no index;
    • otherwise only when the unit writes one of the changed names.

    Only touching references count as changed inputs. So a dependent nothing touches is skipped (and counts as keeping its surface for the units below it). A unit that started early assuming the reference kept its surface keeps that compile.

  • Unchanged: which reference assembly a unit reads when it compiles (KeptSurfaceReferences, the input key), when a unit may start early, and when a stale compile is redone.

  • Each result lists the references whose change counted for it, with the first name it writes (changed_by in the VibeLog). The run reports the units left out by names (name_skips) and what reading the names took (name_index). The JSON response is unchanged.

  • docs/compile-check.md step 3 explains the narrowing; Limitations adds:

    • generators that write a name the dependent's sources never write. Leaving a dependent out removes its saved generator output, so in steady use the names come from hand-written sources alone and name_index.with_generated stays near 0. Closing that gap needs left-out dependents to keep their outputs and record;
    • every change to a type in System or Microsoft.CodeAnalysis (and namespaces under them) compiles every dependent;
    • \u-escaped identifiers.
  • docs/vibe-logs.md lists the new fields.

Verification

  • New tests:

    • a dependent that writes no changed name is skipped and reported;
    • one that writes the member's or only the type's name compiles and says which;
    • an unreadable dependent compiles;
    • an unnamed change compiles every dependent, even when names come with it;
    • an early compile is kept when the assumed reference changed only names the unit never writes (as a dependent and as a unit selected for its own sources), and is redone when it writes one;
    • a unit selected for its own sources still reads the produced reference assembly;
    • only the touching references are named;
    • the chain below a name skip is skipped;
    • a name only in saved generator output makes the dependent compile;
    • a unit that started early compiles again on a name only its saved generator output writes, although its own compile removes that output;
    • the generator output is read before start returns: a FIFO source holds the background read until the directory is gone (not run on Windows);
    • identifiers with a spacing mark, combining mark, connector, letter number and zero-width joiner; a target-typed new with and without white space;
    • identifier scanning, reading sources and generated code, and the background read being over once the run returns;
    • the VibeLog fields, and their absence when there is nothing to say.
  • Mutations, each tried and then restored:

    Mutation Fails
    A named change always touches skip by names, early compile kept, chain skip, plus 4 more

  • In cli/dispatcher:

    • go test -race -count=1 ./internal/compilecheck/... ./internal/dispatcher/... passes;
    • the new scheduler tests pass 10 times in a row under -race.
  • In each of the four Go modules:

    • gofmt -l is empty;
    • go vet passes;
    • golangci-lint run reports 0 issues.
  • go test ./... passes in cli/dispatcher and in cli/release-automation (including ./internal/architecture/...). In cli/common and cli/project-runner, one test each fails only because the local sandbox refuses a directory under /tmp and a Unix socket bind; neither module is touched here.

  • scripts/check-code-complexity.sh and scripts/check-file-length.sh pass. The longest production Go file touched has 447 lines.

  • BenchmarkScanIdentifiers (a file of 40,000 new Thing() expressions, about 840 KB): 13 ms per scan, against 1.07 s with the previous new( check that copied the rest of the file.

  • Not verified here: the timing on a large project. That is measured after merge.

📝 Walkthrough

Compile-check now indexes identifiers in unit sources and saved generated code. After a reference surface changes, the scheduler uses changed names to select affected dependents and reports affected references, name-based skips, and index metrics.

Changes: Compile-check name filtering

Layer / File(s) Summary
Build the identifier index
cli/dispatcher/internal/compilecheck/name_index.go, cli/dispatcher/internal/compilecheck/name_index_test.go
The index scans source files and saved generated C# files. Tests cover identifier scanning, file collection, and index completion and lookup.
Apply name-based reference effects
cli/dispatcher/internal/compilecheck/compiler.go, cli/dispatcher/internal/compilecheck/name_index.go, cli/dispatcher/internal/compilecheck/scheduler.go, cli/dispatcher/internal/compilecheck/scheduler_settle.go, cli/dispatcher/internal/compilecheck/scheduler_names_test.go, cli/dispatcher/internal/compilecheck/scheduler_surface_test.go
Surface verdicts and dependent identifiers determine which references affect each unit. The scheduler skips dependents that write none of a named change, while unnamed changes and unreadable identifiers still result in compilation. Tests cover dependent selection, recompilation, and downstream skips.
Return and report filtering results
cli/dispatcher/internal/compilecheck/session.go, cli/dispatcher/internal/dispatcher/compile_check_vibe_log.go, cli/dispatcher/internal/dispatcher/compile_check_vibe_log_test.go, docs/compile-check.md, docs/vibe-logs.md
Compile-check results and completion logs include changed references, name skips, and index metrics. Documentation describes filtering behavior and limitations.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 1d617

Compile-check can miss a dependent compilation failure when saved generated output is unavailable. Resolve or explicitly accept that limitation before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 1d617

The change is limited to offline compile checking and does not make its outputs live in Unity. However, incomplete name information can cause dependent errors to go unchecked, including after saved generated code has been removed. Broad compilation remains available as a fallback.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Generated-name evidence does not survive all transitions that now depend on it. Skipping a dependent removes its saved outputs; a later run accepts a missing generated directory without an indexing error. A named API change used only by generated code can therefore be classified as irrelevant, leaving the dependent unchecked and propagating a kept-surface verdict downstream. Output removal predates this PR, but using the remaining names to justify skipping a changed reference is new. The current-run snapshot protects against concurrent output replacement, not evidence loss between runs. This weakens validation failure containment, although the outputs are not deployed into Unity.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is the accuracy of offline checks within the selected project's dependency graph, including downstream skips. Exploiting the identified name gaps requires control over relevant project inputs or generated output. The reviewed flow does not establish cross-tenant access, privilege gain, or execution of these outputs by Unity.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A readable but incomplete index can turn an actual dependency into a negative name match, followed by a skipped check and potentially a successful command response without the dependent's errors. This is a validation blind spot, not evidence of an authorization bypass or a verified security vulnerability.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The command acquires the existing project lock before planning and compilation. Name lookup waits for indexing, and lookup errors conservatively touch the dependent. These controls address concurrent runs and failed reads, but not successfully read yet incomplete identifier evidence.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The generated-name snapshot survives output replacement during the same run, and stale speculative results are recompiled rather than adopted. That protection is run-scoped; the documented cleanup behavior can remove the evidence needed by a later run.

Include combining marks in indexed C# type names.

C# permits combining marks in identifier parts. scanIdentifiers stops before them. A one-sided type change can still return the complete type name as a named surface change because ChangedSurfaceNames.AddTypeNames adds type names without IsCSharpIdentifier validation. A dependent that uses that type can therefore miss the exact name lookup and be skipped instead of compiled.

Skip comments when detecting target-typed constructors.

The worker reports a changed constructor as new(. The scanner removes whitespace but not comments, so new /*comment*/ (args) does not add that marker. If the dependent does not spell the constructed type, namedEffect finds no changed name and the scheduler skips the readable dependent instead of compiling it.

Compile dependents when saved generator output is unavailable.

When the generated-output directory is missing, buildUnitIdentifiers returns the source identifiers without an error. namedEffect then treats the dependent as readable and can skip it when its sources contain none of the changed names. A generated reference to the changed API can therefore remain unchecked and hide a compile error.

Treat missing generated output as unreadable so the dependent compiles on any reference change.

…hanged API touches

When a reference's public API changed and the worker named what the
change touches, a dependent that writes none of those names - in its
sources or in the generator output its last full compile saved - is
now left out the way one whose reference kept its surface is. It counts
as keeping its surface for the assemblies below it, and a unit that
started early on the assumption that the reference kept its surface
keeps that compile instead of compiling again.

The identifiers of every unit that references another unit of the plan
are read in the background as the run starts. A change no name tells,
a reference nobody compared, and a unit whose sources cannot be read
still touch every dependent. Which reference assembly a unit reads when
it compiles is unchanged: only whether it has to compile moves.

Each result names the references whose change counted for it and the
first name it writes; the run reports the units left out by names and
what reading the names took. The VibeLog shows both, and the docs list
which changes are unnamed and what the check cannot see.
…n remove it

A unit's compile removes and rewrites its saved generator output. The
name index read that directory in the background, so a unit that
started early could remove it first, lose the names only its generator
wrote, and keep a compile that assumed a reference whose change it
does use. The generator output is now read before the run starts any
compile; only the sources, which nothing removes, are read in the
background.

Identifiers are cut by the characters C# allows: a letter number starts
one, combining and spacing marks, connectors and formatting characters
continue one, and formatting characters are left out of the name.
Finding a target-typed new no longer copies the rest of the file at
every "new", which made a file full of them take quadratic time.

The docs now say that leaving a dependent out removes its saved
generator output, so the names usually come from its hand-written
sources alone.
…nd read

A FIFO source holds the background read until the generated directory is gone, so a name index that reads the generator output in the background fails every time instead of only when it loses a race.
