Summary

User Impact

Agents reading the compile-check skill learn that a skipped assembly may be one whose reference changed, but only in names it never uses. Maintainers get the decision, the measurements behind it, the accepted gaps, and when to revisit it.

Changes

  • docs/adr/0017-compile-check-skips-dependents-that-name-nothing-a-reference-changed.md:
    • Decision: which changes are named and which are unnamed (assembly-level rows, type shape, abstract members added, operators, pattern-bound members, handler and builder types, well-known System / Microsoft.CodeAnalysis types, moved rows, more than 2000 names), and that anything the check cannot read compiles.
    • Context: measurements on a project with 561 assemblies. A specific name is written by 0 to 2 of the 67 dependents of an assembly; a short common name by 48 to 52; a target-typed new( by 59. Saved generator output existed for only 4 dependents, and none of it used a name of the edited assembly.
    • Consequences: the expected time for such an edit, and the known gaps:
      • generator-only names, made the common case because a left-out dependent loses its saved generator output;
      • async method builder types;
      • \u escapes;
      • extension classes in System.*;
      • common pattern-bound method names.
    • Revisit when: a dependent compiled by Unity fails on a change this check left it out of, or reading the names takes more than a tenth of a run.
  • Packages/src/Editor/CliOnlyTools~/CompileCheck/Skill/SKILL.md: one line on SkippedAssemblies.

Verification

  • go run ./cmd/check-skill-size --root <repository root> (in cli/release-automation): no SKILL.md exceeds the limit.
  • scripts/sync-tool-docs.sh --check: the tool catalog matches the skill tables.
  • Documentation only; no code changes.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds an ADR that documents name-based dependent skipping, its limits, measurements, and revisit criteria. It also updates the SkippedAssemblies description to include dependents that do not write changed names.

Changes: Compile-check skip policy

Layer / File(s) Summary
Name-based dependent skip policy
docs/adr/0017-compile-check-skips-dependents-that-name-nothing-a-reference-changed.md, Packages/src/Editor/CliOnlyTools~/CompileCheck/Skill/SKILL.md
The ADR documents when name-based skipping applies, when dependents compile, project measurements, known missed-error cases, VibeLog data, and revisit criteria. The skill description includes assemblies skipped when they do not write changed names.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Change: Other

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 37a6c

The ADR explains name-based dependent skipping, but its blanket same-result statement conflicts with the generator gaps it documents and could overstate compile-check coverage. This is a bounded documentation risk; no runtime behavior changes in this PR.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in Packages/src/Editor/CliOnlyTools~/CompileCheck/Skill/SKILL.md: The SkippedAssemblies description now also counts assemblies left out when a referenced assembly changed only names the skipped assembly never writes; previously it required the referenced assembly’s public surface to remain unchanged.
  • observed — Modified behavior in docs/adr/0017-compile-check-skips-dependents-that-name-nothing-a-reference-changed.md: The decision describes name-based dependent skipping and defines unnamed changes that still compile every dependent, including structural or compiler-bound changes, framework namespace rows, moved-only rows, and changes with more than 2,000 names. Added or removed types are matched by type name, with extension methods checked as members. Unreadable comparisons or sources, and worker answers naming nothing, compile; dependent identifiers include comments, strings, and code excluded by #if.
  • observed — Modified behavior in docs/adr/0017-compile-check-skips-dependents-that-name-nothing-a-reference-changed.md: Adds project measurements for 561 assemblies: a public-property edit took about 28.5 seconds, and dependents wrote specific changed names far less often than common names or new(. It also records that saved generator output existed for only four dependents and did not use names from the edited assembly.
  • observed — Modified behavior in docs/adr/0017-compile-check-skips-dependents-that-name-nothing-a-reference-changed.md: Documents expected timing of 12–15 seconds for specific-name edits and identifies missed-error cases, including generators without saved output, async method builder type changes, and escaped identifiers. It also states that changes in System.* and pattern-bound common names can compile every dependent, and lists the changed-name, touch, skip, and timing data shown in the VibeLog.

So the dependents that write a changed name are few for a specific name. The others compile to the
same result, and only spend the time.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Qualify the same-result claim.

Lines 65–70 describe a generator-only case where generated code can use a changed member name that the dependent’s sources do not write. In that case, skipping the dependent can miss a compile error. Limit this claim to the expected behavior and state that the accepted gaps below are exceptions.

Suggested wording
- The others compile to the same result, and only spend the time.
+ Dependents that write none of the changed names are expected to produce the same result, except for the accepted gaps below.

…eference changed

ADR 0017 records the decision to leave out a dependent that writes none
of the names a reference's public API change touches: which changes stay
unnamed and compile every dependent, the measurements on a project with
561 assemblies that motivated it, the gaps it accepts (generators that
write a name the dependent's sources never write, async method builder
types, escaped identifiers), and when to revisit it.

The compile-check skill now says SkippedAssemblies also counts the
assemblies whose references changed only names they never write.
