Part of #403: the mirror step. proxy mirror, mirror API jobs and SBOMs take pkg:git/{host}/{path}@{commit} and cache the repository and commit in the git cache that /git serves, so a later clone is a cache hit, also with the upstream down.

  • gitcache.Cache.Mirror clones or refreshes the repository and waits for that to finish, unlike a client request. With a commit, it checks the commit is there. A commit on no branch or tag is fetched by ID and kept under refs/proxy/wanted/, the same as for actions/checkout. Where credentials turn fetching by ID off, such a commit fails.
  • GitHandler.Mirror picks the upstream.git host whose URL the PURL's host and path start with (the longest match wins). It then resolves the repository the way a /git request is resolved, with the same path checks and repos allowlist.
  • mirror.Mirror gets a Git field, like Images. A pkg:git without a version mirrors the repository instead of listing versions.
  • The server sets Git when upstream.git is configured. proxy mirror opens the git cache itself. While the server holds git.cache_dir (the cache is one process only), pkg:git items fail with a pointer to the mirror API, and the other items are still mirrored.

Open questions:

  • A mirrored commit on no branch or tag is kept for wantedMaxAge (7 days) from the last mirror run that named it, so a weekly run keeps it. The whole repository can still be evicted by git.max_size. Pinning mirrored commits with no expiry would need its own ref prefix and setting. I left that out of this PR.
  • Only full commit IDs are versions for now. purl-spec also allows a tag. Supporting tags would be a small follow-up if wanted.
  • pkg:github/pkg:bitbucket could map to pkg:git/github.com/.... Left out, since GitHub Actions show up in SBOMs as pkg:github and mirroring them would change what existing SBOM jobs do.

Tests: internal/gitcache/mirror_test.go (clone, fetch by ID, renewing the wanted ref, a refresh that fetched, ID fetching off, missing commit), internal/handler/git_mirror_test.go (host/path resolution, a clone served from the mirrored copy with the upstream down), internal/mirror/git_test.go (counting, unversioned), internal/server/git_test.go (end to end through /api/mirror), cmd/proxy/mirror_git_test.go (the command, and the cache held by another process).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added Git repository mirroring by PURL, including whole repositories and specific commits. Repeated requests can reuse cached content, and mirrored commits remain available through the proxy.
    • The mirror command can continue processing non-Git items when Git mirroring is unavailable; Git items are reported as unavailable.
  • Documentation
    • Added an example for mirroring a specific upstream Git commit and expanded guidance on Git mirroring, including branch and tag behavior and cache availability.

proxy mirror, mirror API jobs and SBOMs take pkg:git/{host}/{path}@{commit}
and cache the repository and commit in the cache /git serves, so a later
clone is a cache hit, also with the upstream down. Part of git-pkgs#403.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The change adds pkg:git support to mirroring. It resolves Git PURLs against configured upstreams, stores repositories and requested commits in the Git cache, and connects that flow to the mirror command and server API.

Changes: Git PURL Mirroring

Layer / File(s) Summary
Git cache mirror operations
internal/gitcache/mirror.go, internal/gitcache/wants.go, internal/gitcache/mirror_test.go
Cache.Mirror refreshes repositories, verifies requested commit IDs, and fetches missing commits when allowed. Wanted refs track commits not included by branches or tags. Tests cover cache reuse, commit availability, branch updates, and wanted-ref retention.
Upstream resolution and Git handler
internal/handler/git_mirror.go, internal/handler/git_mirror_test.go, internal/handler/git_test.go
GitHandler.Mirror selects a configured upstream using the longest matching URL prefix and delegates to the cache. Tests cover location matching and cloning mirrored commits.
PURL mirror dispatch
internal/mirror/git.go, internal/mirror/mirror.go, internal/mirror/source.go, internal/mirror/git_test.go
Unversioned Git PURLs are emitted as direct mirror items. The mirror routes Git packages to GitMirrorer and records mirror results.
Server and command integration
internal/server/server.go, internal/server/mirror_versions.go, internal/server/git_test.go, cmd/proxy/main.go, cmd/proxy/mirror_git_test.go, README.md, docs/architecture.md, docs/configuration.md
The server and mirror command configure and manage the Git cache. Integration tests cover command and API mirroring. The README and documentation describe Git PURL mirroring and its configuration.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in README.md: Adds an example command for mirroring a Git commit by its 40-character commit hash; the preceding container-image example remains unchanged.
  • observed — Modified behavior in cmd/proxy/main.go: runMirror now calls useCommandGit before m.Run and closes the Git cache after the run. A cache-open failure leaves non-Git mirroring available while Git items receive an unavailable reason; a close failure is logged.
  • observed — Modified behavior in cmd/proxy/main.go: Adds useCommandGit, which obtains the command mirror’s Git cache through server.NewMirrorGit. It assigns the Git implementation when available, returns a no-op closer when no cache is configured or opening fails, and logs errors from closing an opened cache.
  • observed — Modified behavior in cmd/proxy/mirror_git_test.go: Adds a helper that creates a bare team/repo.git upstream with one commit on main, serves it through Git’s CGI http-backend, and returns the server and commit hash. It skips the test when neither supported backend executable is available and registers server cleanup.

Mirroring a commit a second time doesn't extend how long it's kept. ensureCommit in internal/gitcache/mirror.go returns as soon as missingObjects finds the commit, without writing a new refs/proxy/wanted/<now>/<oid> ref. pruneWanted drops the ref 7 days after its first fetch, and the object then sits unreferenced in the pack until auto gc prunes it. Throughout that window a re-mirror reports it as Cached. So a weekly SBOM mirror keeps saying the commit is cached until gc deletes it, and only the run after that fetches it again, which needs the upstream to be up. That's the case the feature is meant to cover. When the commit is present but no branch or tag reaches it (the same rev-list --not --branches --tags check pruneWanted runs), ensureCommit should write a fresh wanted ref under the write lock. Please add a test that backdates a wanted ref, mirrors again and checks the ref was renewed. This doesn't need the separate pin prefix or expiry setting you left out; it just makes the 7 days count from the last mirror run instead of the first.

For a cached repository, Cache.Mirror returns Cached: true even when the refresh fetched new commits, so mirrorGit counts the item as skipped and drops result.Bytes. Set Cached only when the repository didn't grow.

The last sentence of the GitHandler.Mirror comment in internal/handler/git_mirror.go ("It is the copy clones through /git are then served") doesn't parse. Cut it or make it "Clones through /git are then served from that copy."

Mirroring a commit on no branch or tag again writes a fresh wanted ref, so
its 7 days count from the last mirror run. A cached repository whose refresh
fetched new commits is no longer reported as cached.

Thanks, all three done in abe9401:

  • ensureCommit now writes a fresh wanted ref under the write lock when the commit is cached but no branch or tag reaches it. The rev-list --not --branches --tags check moved out of pruneWanted into unmergedCommits so both use it. TestMirrorRenewsWantedCommit backdates the ref and checks the second mirror writes a new one; TestMirrorDoesNotPinCommitOnABranch checks a commit on a branch gets none.
  • Cached is set only when the repository didn't grow (TestMirrorCountsRefreshThatFetched).
  • Took your wording for the GitHandler.Mirror comment.

The docs line now says the seven days count from the last mirror run.

Test commit handling through the API.

The requested commit is already main HEAD, so an unversioned mirror can pass this test. Add an API case with a full commit ID absent from the upstream and assert that the job fails. Keep the existing offline clone check.

Return the oversized refresh error for commit requests

If a refresh exceeds git.max_repo_size, ensureCommit can find the commit while the lease still protects the repository. Mirror then reports success, but releasing the lease can evict the repository. A later /git request can fail if the upstream is unavailable.
