Part of #403: the rest of the mirror step after #667.
A pkg:git version can be a tag as well as a full commit ID, as purl-spec allows: pkg:git/github.com/git-pkgs/purl@v0.2.1. Tags are cached with the repository's branches anyway, so gitcache.Cache.Mirror checks the name with git check-ref-format, refreshes, and resolves refs/tags/<tag>^{commit}. A tag the cache doesn't have fails with ErrNotFound, or with the refresh error if the refresh failed.
With a version, Mirror lists the submodules the commit records: its gitlinks that .gitmodules gives a URL for. GitHandler.Mirror then mirrors each at the pinned commit, from the upstream.git host serving it, and their submodules in turn (at most 8 deep, each repository and commit once). Relative URLs are resolved against the superproject's URL as git does; ssh://, git:// and git@host:path URLs are matched by host and path. A submodule no upstream.git host serves is skipped with a warning, so a superproject with a submodule on another forge still mirrors.
pkg:github/pkg:bitbucket are still left out, as in #667.
Tests: internal/gitcache/mirror_test.go (tag resolved, missing tag, invalid names, submodules listed), internal/handler/git_mirror_test.go (submodule URL forms, a submodule cloned through the proxy with the upstream down, one on another host skipped).
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Git mirroring now accepts a tag as a version, alongside a full commit ID. Tags must exist in the repository; branch names aren’t accepted as versions.
Mirroring a versioned commit now includes its pinned submodules, resolving supported relative and remote URLs. Submodules without a configured upstream host are skipped with a warning. Without a specified version, mirroring caches branches and tags.
Documentation
Updated the configuration and architecture guides with tag and submodule mirroring details.
A pkg:git version can now be a tag as well as a full commit ID. With a
version, the submodules the commit records are mirrored at the commits it
pins, from the upstream.git hosts serving them; one no host serves is
skipped with a warning.
Git mirroring now accepts tags as versions and returns pinned submodule data. The handler recursively mirrors submodules that map to configured upstreams, while warning and skipping unresolved or unserved submodules.

Summary
Version resolution and submodule records internal/gitcache/mirror.go, internal/gitcache/mirror_test.go
Cache.Mirror resolves tags to commits and returns the resolved commit with its pinned submodules. Tests cover tag resolution, invalid versions, and submodule extraction.
The handler resolves submodule URLs and recursively mirrors served commits. It skips unresolved or unserved submodules with a warning, avoids repeated location-and-commit pairs, and errors if nesting exceeds 8. Documentation describes tag versions and submodule behavior.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 7f2ac
Tag and submodule mirroring is ready to merge. Absolute submodule URLs require matching client rewrites.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 7f2ac
Recursive mirroring preserves configured repository restrictions, but a single requested commit can now trigger a large transitive workload. Depth and concurrency limits reduce exposure without bounding total work, creating a resource-amplification risk when an attacker-controlled repository is mirrored.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: A versioned mirror now follows repository-controlled submodule records without a graph-wide work budget. An attacker who controls a mirrored, allowlisted repository can supply many distinct served repository/commit pairs, causing one requested item to generate substantial cumulative fetch work and shared-cache churn. The eight-level depth limit and pair deduplication do not bound breadth. Existing fetch concurrency, repository-size and cache-size controls reduce impact but do not bound total transfer or job duration. Previously, the same Git mirror call fetched only the explicitly requested repository.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The introduced amplification can affect a proxy instance's shared Git cache, mirror workers and outbound fetch capacity across configured, allowed repositories. Exploitation requires attacker-controlled repository metadata to be selected for versioned mirroring. Arbitrary-host access or additional credential authority is not established by the inspected flow.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — An attacker-controlled allowed superproject can record many distinct served submodules. Once its version is mirrored, each unseen location/commit pair initiates another cache operation. Broad graphs fit within the depth limit, and job creation supplies cancellation but no automatic graph-wide deadline. This creates a new repository-content-driven resource-amplification path, even though direct requests for the same allowed repositories were already possible.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Recursive children re-enter existing host and repository policy enforcement. Authenticated upstream configurations require explicit repository patterns, and Git fetches use the proxy-controlled relay rather than arbitrary SSH, Git or local-file transports. The optional mirror API is disabled by default; its existing lack of application-level authentication when enabled is not introduced by this PR.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Cancellation releases the current mirror lease, while an already-started shared refresh retains its own repository use and runs under the cache context with a per-refresh timeout. Repetition uses a fresh traversal seen set; successful cache entries can be reused, but graph completion is not transactional.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Add a traversal-wide budget for unique repository/commit pairs, cumulative work or transfer, and elapsed time. Check the budget before initiating each child, while retaining existing repository allowlists and per-repository cache controls.
