Repository navigation
List cached Git repositories in the UI and metrics - #675
/ui/git, linked as "Git" in the navigation when upstream.git is configured, lists the cached repositories: upstream, clone URL through the proxy, size, the newest commit of the branch HEAD names (short ID, subject, age), how many branches and tags there are, when the upstream was last checked and a client last read it, how many clones and fetches it served, and the kind of error (fetch_failed, too_large, …) while the last refresh failed.
proxy_ecosystem_cache_size_bytes and proxy_ecosystem_cached_artifacts report the git cache as ecosystem="git", counting repositories as artifacts. Hits, misses, upstream fetches, errors and evictions were already recorded under git.
gitcache.Cache.Repositories is a snapshot of what the cache tracks. RepositoryState reads branch, commit and ref counts with git, and is read again only after the repository's next upstream check, so the page doesn't run git for every repository on every view.
I left out the git_repositories table the plan mentioned. The cache already loads every repository from cache_dir at startup with its size and last check and use (from the stamp files), so a table would only add the request counts and last error. Those are kept in memory here and start over on a restart, which the docs say. Happy to add the table if you'd rather have them kept.
The UI has no authentication, so the page shows the names of repositories from upstreams with credentials to anyone who can reach it. /git already lets those people clone them; the docs say so too.
Error messages aren't shown, only their kind, since git's stderr can carry upstream URLs.
Tried on a Raspberry Pi with upstream.git: {github: https://github.com}: clones of git-pkgs/purl and git-pkgs/vers show up with their size, main @ <commit>, branches and tags, and the git gauges carry both repositories.
Tests: internal/gitcache/stats_test.go (snapshot, a failed refresh, a cache reopened over its directory, state following a push), internal/server/git_ui_test.go (page and navigation with and without upstream.git, rows, gauges).
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added a Git repositories page showing cached repositories, upstreams, sizes, activity, refresh errors, and available branch and commit details.
Added Git cache statistics to ecosystem metrics, including repository counts, cache size, and request outcomes.
Documentation
Expanded the Git cache documentation with page details, metric definitions, and notes on visibility and data resets.
Clarified that the cached-artifacts metric counts repositories for the Git ecosystem.
/ui/git lists the git cache's repositories with their upstream, clone URL,
size, last check and use, requests served and the last refresh error. The
per-ecosystem cache size and artifact gauges report the git cache as
ecosystem="git".
The Git cache now exposes repository statistics and Git state. A conditional /ui/git page lists cached repositories and their activity. Git repository counts and sizes are included in ecosystem metrics.

Summary
Repository statistics and state internal/gitcache/cache.go, internal/gitcache/serve.go, internal/gitcache/refresh.go, internal/gitcache/stats.go, internal/gitcache/stats_test.go
The cache records clone and fetch requests and refresh errors. New methods return sorted repository statistics and Git state, including branch and tag counts and latest commit details. Tests cover cached and reopened repositories, refresh errors, and state updates.
The server registers and links to /ui/git when a Git cache is configured. The page displays repository details and cache totals. Tests cover the page, its empty state, filtering, and behavior without a configured Git upstream. The documentation describes the page, its displayed data, and the unauthenticated exposure of repository names.

The new page can disclose cached repository metadata to users who cannot clone those repositories, including after repository permissions are narrowed. Concurrent requests can also multiply Git subprocess work before cached results become available. Existing output escaping, credential handling, and state caching reduce other risks.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: The new listing does not preserve the clone endpoint's repository-access boundary. It publishes cached names, branch names, commit subjects, and activity without applying the current repository allowlist or checking upstream access refusal. Narrowing repos while retaining the same upstream URL leaves old cached repositories eligible for display. Moreover, deployments exposing only /ui can disclose this metadata even when /git is inaccessible. Existing unauthenticated cloning therefore does not establish equivalent exposure.
Medium · security · inferred: Unauthenticated concurrent page requests can amplify Git subprocess and memory consumption during cold or invalidated state-cache windows. Each request processes repositories sequentially, but concurrent misses for the same repository independently run up to three commands without single-flight coordination or the existing ref-list concurrency gate. Ref-list stdout is buffered without a size bound. Large cached ref sets increase the potential impact on the shared proxy process; warm results prevent this work on ordinary cache hits.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — A caller needs only access to /ui/git, not upstream credentials or prior knowledge of repository names. Disclosure can span cached repositories across configured upstreams, including credentialed upstreams. Resource exhaustion would affect the shared proxy instance rather than only one repository.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — After an operator removes a previously cached repository from repos without changing the upstream URL, cloning rejects that repository but the new listing still accepts its cache-directory prefix and renders metadata. This is distinct from the pre-existing policy that allowed repositories are cloneable by all clients reaching /git.
inferred — Concurrent listing requests arriving before a state result is cached can each launch duplicate Git reads. A large existing branch/tag set increases buffered output; controlling such an upstream can amplify the attack, but upstream write access is not required to issue concurrent page requests.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Attacker-influenced repository metadata is passed to fixed Git commands through argument arrays and rendered through contextual HTML escaping. These controls counter command and markup injection; they do not authorize disclosure or limit subprocess concurrency.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Completed state reads are cached by repository and check timestamp, and subprocesses use request cancellation. However, concurrent misses are not coalesced, and the semaphore protecting clone ref advertisements is not acquired by the new state reader.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Apply repository visibility policy before reading or rendering metadata, and make credentialed repository visibility an explicit deployment choice. Bound state-read concurrency and output, coalesce reads for the same repository/check generation, and retain cancellation behavior.

Concurrent RepositoryState calls on a cold cache can run the same git commands in parallel, and a failed read is never cached.
Each call to RepositoryState runs readState when rp.state is not current. Page views for the same repository can overlap. Each one then starts up to three git processes per repository. /ui/git has no authentication, so repeated requests can multiply this work.
A repository where readState fails, such as one that is corrupt, reruns git on every page view. Only successful reads are cached.
Consider a per-repository singleflight around readState. Cache the failure against checked, so a failed read is retried only after the next upstream check.

Review comment at @internal/gitcache/stats.go around lines 99 - 116:
Update RepositoryState to coalesce concurrent readState calls for the same
repository using per-repository singleflight, and extend cachedState to retain
read errors as well as successful results, keyed to the captured checked value.
Return the cached error while that value remains current, and allow a new read
after the upstream check changes; preserve ErrNotFound and existing
successful-cache behavior.
The handler runs git for every uncached repository on a page view.
RepositoryState runs git per repository, and the calls run in sequence. The first view after startup, or after any upstream check, runs three git commands per repository on the request thread. A cache with many repositories makes this page slow. The page has no authentication.
Consider bounding the work. For example, limit the concurrency, or apply a per-request deadline and show rows without state when it expires.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
The summary line uses the wrong count when rows are filtered.
{{len .Rows}} counts only rows for configured upstreams. .TotalSize is computed from all repositories, including those of upstreams no longer configured. The count and the size can therefore disagree. The line also reads "1 repositories" for a single row.
Compute TotalSize from the displayed rows, or label it as the cache total. Handle the singular form.

The summary said "1 repositories" and counted the size of repositories it
didn't list. A repository whose state can't be read is no longer read on
every page view, only after its next upstream check.
