First of a stack of macOS integrations. Each one sits behind the new OS-neutral cloofy-os crate, so Linux can add its own (MPRIS, …) behind the same interface later.

What changes

  • Media keys, AirPods and Control Center play, pause, skip and seek. Control Center shows title, artists, album, progress and cover.
  • New crate cloofy-os. It exposes one interface for every platform: media::Controls and run_main. macOS implements it with the MediaPlayer framework; other systems get a no-op, and Controls::new returns None there, so Linux doesn't even download covers for it.
  • Main thread. macOS delivers remote commands through the main thread's run loop. main now hands that thread to CoreFoundation, and cloofy runs on a worker thread with the same 8 MiB stack.
  • Only cloofy's own playback is shown. While another device plays, cloofy's entry is cleared. Otherwise it would take the media keys away from the Spotify app that actually plays.
  • Headless. cloofy play and cloofy connect get the same controls.

Verified

  • Ran the real TUI under tmux and read mediaremoted's log. It registers as cloofy-… with the restored track paused, and Control Center fetches its artwork. The Spotify desktop app stayed the active Now Playing app: a paused entry doesn't take over (no ActiveNowPlayingClient change).
  • Quitting: ^Q ends the process 0.1 s later, the same as the current release build. cloofy connect stops on SIGINT in 0.8 s.
  • Tests:
    • run_main (without the test harness): work done before the loop starts, work done while it runs, and a panic.
    • MediaSync change detection: 5 new tests.
  • cloofy-os passes clippy for the Linux target as well.

To test by hand

  • Play something in cloofy: F8 pauses, F9 skips
  • Control Center shows the track and its cover; dragging the scrubber seeks
  • Taking an AirPod out pauses
  • Moving playback to the phone removes cloofy's entry from Control Center
  • cargo run -p cloofy-os --example now_playing prints each command it gets, without Spotify

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • macOS playback in cloofy play and cloofy connect supports play, pause, skip, and seek through media keys, AirPods, and Control Center.
    • Control Center displays the current track and cover art.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds a cross-platform media-controls API, a macOS implementation, and integrations that synchronize playback state and handle media commands in the TUI and CLI.

Changes: Media controls

Layer / File(s) Summary
OS media API and runtime
Cargo.toml, crates/cloofy-os/Cargo.toml, crates/cloofy-os/src/*, crates/cloofy-os/tests/run_main.rs
The new cloofy-os crate defines shared media types and platform dispatch. Its macOS runner runs application work on a worker thread while the main thread runs the Core Foundation run loop.
macOS controls and Now Playing
crates/cloofy-os/src/macos/media.rs, crates/cloofy-os/examples/now_playing.rs, CHANGELOG.md, README.md
The macOS implementation registers playback and seek commands and publishes track metadata, playback state, and optional artwork. The example and release notes describe the controls.
TUI media synchronization
crates/cloofy-tui/Cargo.toml, crates/cloofy-tui/src/app/mod.rs, crates/cloofy-tui/src/lib.rs, crates/cloofy-tui/src/loader.rs, crates/cloofy-tui/src/media.rs
The TUI forwards system commands to app events and synchronizes local playback state. It loads artwork in the background and applies results for requested covers.
CLI playback integration
crates/cloofy/Cargo.toml, crates/cloofy/src/main.rs, crates/cloofy/src/media.rs, crates/cloofy/src/playback.rs
The CLI connects media commands to librespot and sends playback updates to system controls in standalone and remote modes. It also loads track artwork asynchronously.

The media keys, AirPods and Control Center now control cloofy, and
Control Center shows the track with its cover.

- cloofy-os is the new home of operating system integration. It offers
one interface for every platform; macOS implements it with the
MediaPlayer framework, and other systems get a no-op until they have
  an integration of their own.
- macOS delivers remote commands through the main thread's run loop, so
cloofy itself now runs on a worker thread and `run_main` gives the
  main thread to CoreFoundation.
- The TUI shows only cloofy's own playback. While another device plays,
its entry is cleared: claiming Now Playing there would take the
controls away from the Spotify app that actually plays. A paused
entry doesn't take over, so the restored track shows from the start.
- `cloofy play` and `cloofy connect` get the same controls.

`cargo run -p cloofy-os --example now_playing` shows a made-up track
for trying it without Spotify.

- The TUI tried a cover that failed to load never again for that track.
It now retries after 30 seconds, so a cover that keeps failing isn't
  requested on every loop.
- `cloofy play` and `cloofy connect` could put the previous track's
cover on a track without one, when the old download finished late.
