ADFA-4930: relocate Gradle build output by default - #2155
PR 4 of 4 in the stack from docs/superpowers/plans/2026-10-14-adfa-4930-build-output-off-fuse.md, based on #2151, then #2150 and #2149. Merge those first. This PR's diff is nineteen commits plus five merges bringing in fixes from lower in the stack (#2151's sweep 34b6603 and marker 5f0afab, #2149's included builds 0b2f870, 315baa6: stage, #2149's experiment gate and #2151's no-follow tree deletion, and 86c4764: #2149's mixed-layout fix, already here as 55ebfde). 88a8f49 graduates the BUILD_OUTPUT_RELOCATION experiment that #2149 adds, deleting its entry, as this PR turns relocation on for everyone. Review by commit: 6d6e126 is renames only.
Why. The plan's validation gate has been run, and the results are posted on ADFA-4930. With build output in app storage, warm edit builds of a 288-source project took 48% less time on a Pixel 6 Pro. On a 1.9 GB itel A667L, clean builds took about 50% less, and small edits were unchanged because the CPU dominates there. Nothing got slower.
What it does
Every sync relocates; there is no switch (ee5c6b3, after Hal Eisen's review). The "Relocate build output" preference, its strings and tooltip tag, the "move it back" banner wording, and the code that deleted a tree after a sync with relocation off are gone. Builds still follow the synced model, not the sync's intent.
The relocation banner. Opening a project loads its cached model without syncing, so an existing project keeps building into its folder until its next sync. After initialization it shows "Sync to move build output to faster storage." with "Not now" and "Sync", once per screen. It is not offered once a sync has succeeded (recorded in the tree as relocating-sync after its model loads, so a sync that fails or is cancelled leaves the offer standing, 8f9392d) or when the tree cannot be written, so a project a sync cannot relocate doesn't get the banner after every sync and every open (55ebfde, Hal Eisen's second review). The text and buttons are short so Sync stays usable at 2x font scale; the shared banner's layout problem is ADFA-6572.
A model counts as relocated when any project's build directory is in the tree (55ebfde). The rule looked at the root alone, so a root build script that sets its own build directory made builds run without the relocation flags while the model still put the subprojects' output in the tree: :app built into app/build, where Run and Export don't look.
A Sync tapped while a build holds the Gradle slot (Quick Build's prebuild starts about 30 s after a project opens) used to be refused, and the failed initialization dropped the loaded model. The banner now defers it, says so, and offers it again once the build frees the slot. It waits on the slot itself (GradleBuildService.buildSlotBusy, d9cbebe): a build's listener can run before the build frees the slot, so a check made when the build flags drop could find it busy and never check again (Hal Eisen's review). The generic sync banner says to sync once the build ends.
Old output in the project folder is removed, once (bcff8fa, Hal Eisen's review). After a project's first relocated initialization, OldBuildOutput deletes the build/ of each project the model relocated (only those: a project whose build script sets its own build directory keeps its build/, 5b25a22), and .gradle/ and .kotlin/ at the root and in buildSrc, records that in the tree once everything is gone (a deletion that fails is retried at the next initialization), and tells the user once: "Old build output was removed from the project folder. Export gets your latest build." A stale app-debug.apk where a file manager finds it misleads, and the copy doubles the space a project takes. Kept: buildSrc/.gradle/ and an included build's .gradle/ and .kotlin/ (still in use); a build folder that is or holds a module, or that the model still builds into; buildSrc/build/, since buildSrc is not in the model (714ef05); anything outside the project folder, checked on canonical paths so a linked module folder cannot lead out of it; symlinks, which are never followed. Skipped while a Quick Build session is live. A later terminal build's output is the user's to keep.
Export covers App Bundles and plugins (15a83c9, Hal Eisen's review). Export APK becomes Export. For the selected variant it offers what was built: the APK, the App Bundle (outputs/bundle/<variant>/ under the module's build directory, as the model has no bundle listing), and a plugin project's .cgp, with a chooser when there is more than one. Each goes to the share sheet or to Download. Installing a built plugin deleted the .cgp it was given; the build's install now hands it a copy, so the plugin can still be exported. The action keeps its id and tooltip tag.
The temporary plugin copy is always deleted, and a blocked offer is retried (5749dfb, CodeRabbit). Installing a built plugin copies it first; a failed install left that copy in filesDir/temp, and now installFromCopy deletes it (two tests fail without it). A relocation offer refused because a build held the Gradle slot is offered again when the build ends, only when a build is the reason. That wiring has no test and has not been run on a device.
Trees are keyed by the canonical project path, so every spelling of the path names the same tree. Existing keys are unchanged: the projects path CoGo uses is already canonical.
build_completed gains relocated_output, for syncs and builds alike, so durations can be split by output location. It isn't on build_started, which can already exceed Firebase's 25-parameter limit.
ARCHITECTURE.md describes where build output lives, and why code must read it from the synced model.
Verified
Unit tests: BuildOutputLocationTest 30/30, OldBuildOutputTest 10/10, BuildExportTest 14/14, PluginCgpLookupTest 3/3, BuildCompletedMetricTest 4/4, RelocatedBuildsTest 4/4: 15 suites with the rest of services.builder, in one run, 0 failures (168 tests, at 714ef05). Each review-fix test fails without its fix:
the deferred offer: with a one-shot check of the slot, "expected: 1 but was: 0";
old output: with each guard removed in turn, the module-called-build, symlinked-folder and no-follow tests fail;
CodeRabbit's two findings (c61696f): before the fix, a module folder linking out of the project let find return its build/, and a failed deletion still wrote the marker, so it was never retried;
tree deletion: with deleteRecursively, the file a link in the tree points at is deleted;
Hal Eisen's second review (5b25a22, 55ebfde): find returned a user's lib/build beside a custom build directory; a model whose root alone sets its build directory was not relocated; and with the marker check removed, or both checks, a futile sync was still offered;
the third round (8f9392d, 714ef05): with the marker written as the sync started, a sync that never finished stopped the offer; and find returned buildSrc/build.
Pixel 6 Pro (Android 17), at 714ef05 merged locally with current stage: a project whose broken build script made its sync fail had no relocating-sync afterwards; once fixed, Sync succeeded and only then wrote it. A project whose scripts set every build directory, its marker removed, was offered the banner; its Sync succeeded, wrote the marker, and the banner did not return.
Pixel 6 Pro (Android 17), at 55ebfde merged locally with current stage (the phone had a stage build, so this avoids a downgrade), with two copies of a template project:
Only the root sets its own build directory, and the root's build/ holds a user file: the sync relocated (no banner), the user file survived, and Run built :app into the tree (main/app-…/outputs/apk/debug/app-debug.apk), nothing in app/build, and offered the install.
Root and :app both set their own build directory: after the sync, no banner, and none after leaving and returning to the app; the log says why (No relocation sync offered … one already ran), and the tree holds relocating-sync.
Settings > Build & Run has no "Relocate build output".
An existing project with build/, app/build/ (holding app-debug.apk), .gradle/ and .kotlin/ showed the relocation banner; Sync relocated it and logged Removed 4 old build output folder(s). The folder kept only sources, and the tree held the old-output-removed marker. With the marker deleted and two stale folders recreated, reopening removed them and showed the message.
Export with only Quick Build's proxy APK said so. After a run, it went straight to "Export APK". After Run Tasks :app:bundleDebug, it offered "APK" and "App Bundle (.aab)"; the bundle was at outputs/bundle/debug/app-debug.aab in the tree, and Copy to Download saved Build Apps Anywhere-debug.aab (3.9 MB).
Font scale 2.0: the Export chooser and "Export App Bundle (.aab)" dialog wrap their title and keep every option readable. 1.0 was fine too.
Galaxy Note20 Ultra (Android 13), before the switch was removed: the banner at 2.0 kept a 108×52 dp Sync button; Sync tapped during Quick Build's prebuild was deferred, with no failed initialization, and offered again after it.
Sites checked: isRequested() had three callers (the sync path, the banner, syncPending's default); all are gone. removeTreesOf had one caller passing keep, now gone. Only BuildOutputLocation.deleteTree in the stack deleted with deleteRecursively.
Not checked on a device:
Exporting a plugin's .cgp. Both plugin projects on the Pixel failed to sync before relocation mattered: their buildscript needs guava-33.3.1-jre.jar, and the bundled Maven repo has only its .pom and .module. This is unrelated to ADFA-4930.
The removal message at 2x font scale. It uses the shared flash message, which wraps.
Docs and QA. The tooltip SQL attached to ADFA-4930 (tooltips-adfa-4930.sql, documentation.db in OfflineDocumentationTools) now covers Export only and deletes the removed switch's tooltip if an earlier version added it; checked on a copy of documentation.db, run twice. The ticket's Steps to QA cover the stack as it is now: no switch, old output removed once, and Export of APKs, App Bundles and plugins.
Benchmarks on a Galaxy Note20 Ultra (Android 13) and a Pixel 6 Pro
(Android 17) show warm-daemon builds 24-35% faster with build output in
app-private storage, and redirecting only build/ and .gradle/ recovers
91% of that. The plan covers the redirect mechanism, the two consumers
that hard-code build/, output lifecycle, a 4-PR stack, validation and
draft Steps to QA.

Moves QuickBuildScratch.projectKey into ProjectStorageKey.of, unchanged,
so relocated Gradle build output can key a project's tree the same way
Quick Build's scratch does. QuickBuildScratch.projectKey delegates to it.
No behavior change; the existing QuickBuildScratch key tests cover it.

With Build & Run > "Relocate build output" on, IDE syncs and builds write
every project's build directory, the project cache (.gradle/) and Kotlin's
.kotlin/ to noBackupFilesDir/gradle-build/<projectKey>/ instead of the
FUSE-backed project folder. Warm-daemon builds measured 24-35% faster
that way; see the plan in docs/superpowers/plans.
- GradleBuildService passes -Pcotg.build.outputDir, --project-cache-dir
and -Pkotlin.project.persistent.dir; sync and builds share these.
- AndroidIDEInitScriptPlugin sets layout.buildDirectory in beforeProject,
before any build script runs; nested builds get their own subdirectory.
- The tree records its project's path for the orphan sweep that comes
later in the stack.
- The arguments end with --no-watch-fs: Gradle refuses --project-cache-dir
with file-system watching turned on, which the tuner's --watch-fs does
under experiments. Watching cannot run on Android anyway (ADFA-6545).
Off by default: Quick Build's setup.json lookup and the plugin .cgp
lookup still read build/ from the project folder until the next PR.

Relocated Gradle build output is not a Quick Build concern, so the shared
project key moves from quickbuild:core to the cross-cutting :shared
module; quickbuild:core now depends on :shared. Imports and the Quick
Build debugging guide's link follow. No behavior change.

The switch is shown, and honored, only while experiments are enabled
(REVIEW.md section 12): until the rest of the stack lands, Quick Build
and plugin builds still look for output in the project folder. The
switch also gets its long-press help tag (section 9); the tooltip text
is still to be written in documentation.db.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VKUthHVokuWKgP3ACLBii7
Relocated build directories mirrored the Gradle path, so `:core:ui`
landed inside `:core`'s build directory (where `:core:clean` deletes
it), a subproject named `generated` or `intermediates` landed in its
parent's task outputs, and `:_root` collided with the root project.
Each project now gets `<build>/<name>-<hash>`: its last path segment
(`root` for `:`) plus a SHA-256 prefix of its full path, flat under
`main/` or under its nested build's key.

Builds read the live switch, while the project model (APK listing
file, classpath) came from the last sync. Toggling the switch without
a sync sent the next build's output somewhere the IDE did not look.
A sync now applies the switch and records the result in
`<project>/.cg/build-output-relocated`; builds follow that record.
When the switch and the record differ, the editor shows the
sync-needed banner on resume, once per change of the switch, and
opening the project syncs it. A sync is recognized by its
`BuildRunType.ProjectSync` build ID.
Also from the PR 1 review:
- `--watch-fs` is removed wherever it sits once the project cache is
relocated, instead of relying on `--no-watch-fs` coming last.
- `prepare` returns false when the tree's marker cannot be written,
instead of throwing out of `prepareBuild`.
- An unset project path (`""`) no longer resolves to the working
directory.
- One `isAvailable()` gate for the switch and the build.

Comment only. BuildOutputRedirect already names ProjectStorageKey as
the derivation it copies; this adds the pointer back.

Opening a project whose switch differs from its last sync showed the
sync-needed banner on the first resume, before initialization had
started, so the open's own sync applied the change and the banner
stayed up over the toolbar, swallowing taps on Run and Quick Build.
The editor now offers the sync only after the project has
initialized, and a successful initialization dismisses an offer it
has made stale, whichever way the sync was started.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VKUthHVokuWKgP3ACLBii7
The sync wrote `.cg/build-output-relocated` in prepareBuild, before
it knew whether it would succeed. A sync that failed left the old
model loaded while builds followed the new record, so a build could
write to one place while the IDE installed an older APK from the
other, and no banner offered the retry. A failed record write gave
the reverse mismatch.
The synced model is now the record: a build relocates exactly when
the model's root build directory is in the project's tree, so a sync
that fails changes neither. The record file is gone. Also:
- A build never falls back to the project folder when the tree
cannot be prepared; that would leave the model pointing at older
output, so Gradle reports the failure instead.
- The sync offer is made after the project initializes and on
resume, and withdrawn when the switch agrees with the model again,
including when the user switches back without syncing. Tapping the
banner's Sync forgets the offer, so a sync that fails is offered
again.
- Opening a project no longer forces a sync for a pending change; the
model is not loaded before initialization, so it offers one after.

Quick Build's setup.json and a plugin project's .cgp were looked up
under `<project>/build`. With relocated build output that path holds
nothing, or a stale report from before the relocation, which Quick
Build would then read.
Both now resolve against the build directory the synced model gives:
the module's for setup.json, the root project's for the .cgp. The
model and the output agree because builds follow the last sync
(PR 1).
`QuickBuildTaskPaths.setupJson` is now relative to the build
directory, and the debugging doc lists the relocated location.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VKUthHVokuWKgP3ACLBii7
From the #2150 review:
- The plugin .cgp lookup moves into `findPluginCgpFile(workspace,
variantName)`, so a test can pin it to the model's root build
directory. `PluginCgpLookupTest` fails against the old
`<project>/build/plugin` lookup.
- `QuickBuildTaskPaths.setupJson` takes the build directory and
returns a File, so a caller cannot resolve it against the module
folder by mistake.
- The fake module's default build directory is absolute, so it never
resolves against the test JVM's working directory.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VKUthHVokuWKgP3ACLBii7
Relocated build output outlived its project: deleting a project in
the IDE left its tree in app storage, and so did deleting, moving or
renaming it outside the IDE.
- Deleting a project (Recents' delete and the Delete projects screen,
both through RecentProjectsViewModel) deletes its trees.
- At startup, off the main thread, a sweep deletes the trees of
projects that no longer exist. A project on a volume that is not
mounted is not gone, and a tree without a marker is left alone.
Trees are matched by their project-path marker rather than by key,
because deletion uses the canonical path and builds use
projectDirPath; a symlinked spelling of the same project would key
differently.

With relocated build output the built APK is in app-private storage,
where a file manager cannot reach it. A toolbar action, after Launch
app and shown only while relocation is available (experiments),
resolves the selected variant's APK from the synced model and offers:
- Share: the share sheet, through the existing FileProvider.
- Copy to Download: `<project>-<variant>.apk`, numbered when taken,
so an earlier export is never overwritten.
Long-press help uses TooltipTag.EDITOR_TOOLBAR_EXPORT_APK
("project.export.apk"); its documentation.db text is a separate SQL
script for OfflineDocumentationTools.

Docs only: where deletion hooks in, how trees are matched, what the
sweep keeps, and that Export APK offers both the share sheet and a
copy in Download.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VKUthHVokuWKgP3ACLBii7
From the #2151 review:
- A malformed or truncated APK listing no longer crashes Export; it
reads as nothing to export.
- Export refuses Quick Build's proxy APK, which Quick Build's build
writes to the variant's output path: the APK is the proxy when the
variant's setup.json names it and is not older than it.
- A copy goes to a temporary name and is renamed into place, so one
that fails part-way leaves no broken APK in Download.
- Export is disabled during a user-visible build and refused, with a
reason, while any build (Quick Build's prebuild included) runs.
- The export name includes the module when the project has more than
one app module.
- A tree's marker is deleted last, so a deletion that stops part-way
leaves a tree the next sweep can still identify.
- The unsafe file-name rule is shared with ExternalFileInstallViewModel
(no behaviour change there).

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VKUthHVokuWKgP3ACLBii7
Validation is in (ADFA-4930): warm edit builds of a 288-source
project took 48% less time with output in app storage on a Pixel 6
Pro, and clean builds about 50% less on a 1.9 GB itel A667L, with no
slowdowns anywhere.
- "Relocate build output" defaults to on.
- The experiments gate goes: the switch and Export APK show for
everyone, and BuildOutputLocation.isRequested() is the switch alone.
- The sync banner says what a relocation change does ("Builds are
faster with build output in Code on the Go's storage..." or "...back
to the project folder") instead of "Gradle files have changed",
since turning this on by default makes it the first thing every
existing project shows.
- ARCHITECTURE.md describes where build output lives and why code must
read it from the synced model.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VKUthHVokuWKgP3ACLBii7
From the PR 4 device test on a Note20:
- At font scale 2.0 the relocation banner's Sync button was crushed to
an unlabelled sliver. The banner now says "Sync to move build output
to faster storage." (or "...back to the project folder.") with a
"Not now" button. The shared layout is ADFA-6572.
- A Sync tapped while a build held the Gradle slot (Quick Build's
prebuild starts soon after a project opens) was refused, and the
failed initialization dropped the loaded model. A Sync tapped then is
now deferred: the relocation banner says so and comes back when the
build ends. The generic sync banner says to sync once the build ends.
Also: after a successful initialization whose model builds into the
project folder, the project's old relocated tree is deleted, so
switching relocation off doesn't leave dead output in app storage.

IMPORTANT
ProjectHandlerActivity.kt:1253 - the tree is deleted under a live Quick Build session
MINOR
ProjectHandlerActivity.kt:1250 - the guard and the deletion identify the project differently
ProjectHandlerActivity.kt:308 - the deletion and deferral decisions have no unit test
NITPICK - 1 inline, not listed
Verdict. Computed: REQUEST_CHANGES, for one confirmed IMPORTANT. Posted as COMMENT because GitHub doesn't allow requesting changes on your own PR. REVIEW.md has no approve/request-changes rule, so the default table applied; CLAUDE.md moves a ticket to QA only with no critical, high or medium findings.
Stack.#2155 is the tip of #2149, #2150, #2151 and #2155 (base stage). Every claim was checked at eb1a366.
Earlier rounds. No earlier review comments on #2155; claude[bot] left only its manual-review notice.
Checked, no finding
With relocation on for everyone, nothing outside the synced model should read <project>/build or .gradle/. A sweep of main sources at eb1a366 found none (PluginManager's "build" strings are service names), and plugins get APKs through ModuleContextResolver, which reads the model.
isAvailable() has no callers left, and the new strings are in :resources.
The deferral and re-offer run on the main thread, the deletion on Dispatchers.IO. A relocated sync can't start while this deletion runs: the banner that would start one is shown only after the deletion returns.
Already disclosed in the PR body, not re-posted: the generic banner's busy-build message isn't checked on a device, the shortened switch summary isn't checked at 2x, and the shared banner layout at 2x is ADFA-6572.
From the #2155 review:
- A live Quick Build session survives a plain sync and keeps absolute
paths into the tree (the proxy APK, classes, payload). Deleting the
unused tree now waits while a session is live; the next project
open deletes it.
- Trees are keyed by the project's canonical path, so every spelling
of it (/sdcard against /storage/emulated/0) names the same tree. The
check that decides whether builds relocate and the deletion now
agree, and the deletion never removes the tree holding the loaded
model's build directory.
- The delete and re-offer decisions are pure functions on
BuildOutputLocation, covered by BuildOutputLocationTest.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VKUthHVokuWKgP3ACLBii7
From the #2155 review (F04): nothing recorded whether a build's output
was relocated, so build durations couldn't be split by output location
once it is on for everyone.
build_completed, which carries the duration, gains `relocated_output`.
It goes there rather than on build_started, which already sends up to
28 parameters with some tuner configurations, over Firebase's limit of
25. The service records each relocating build (not sync) by build ID
when it prepares it, and takes the flag back when the build completes.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VKUthHVokuWKgP3ACLBii7
F01, IMPORTANT, unused-tree cleanup under a live Quick Build session: fixed. shouldDeleteTrees returns false while the session is in any state other than Idle or Prebuilding (ProjectHandlerActivity.isQuickBuildSessionLive). Closing a project calls restartSession(), which tears the session down to Idle, so the next open's initialization deletes the tree as the KDoc says. Prebuilding is safe to exclude: it builds with the current, unrelocated model.
F02, MINOR, guard and deletion keyed differently: fixed. treeFor keys by canonicalProjectLocation(), so the guard, sync, build and deletion all use one key, and removeTreesOf(keep = model's root buildDir) never deletes the model's tree. Canonical keying changes a key only where the canonical path differs from the spelling used (for example /sdcard, or /data/user/0 against /data/data). No released version created relocated trees, so nothing is orphaned. /storage/emulated/0/... is unchanged by inspection; not checked on a device in this review.
F03, MINOR, untested Activity decisions: fixed. shouldDeleteTrees and shouldOfferDeferredSync are pure and covered (BuildOutputLocationTest, including the live-session and slot-busy cases). The deferral itself stays a direct isGradleSlotBusy() check, with no logic left to test.
F04, NITPICK, no relocation flag in analytics: partly fixed. build_completed gains relocated_output for builds, and placing it on that event (8 parameters at most) instead of build_started (up to 28) is right. But syncs are recorded wrongly; see the IMPORTANT above. BuildCompletedMetricTest's new case fails without the change (no putBoolean), but it pins only the bundle, not the service's prepare-to-completion wiring, which is where the defect is.
Considered, not posted:relocatedBuildIds cannot grow without bound, since every prepared build and sync reaches notifyBuildSuccess or notifyBuildFailure and so dispatchBuildResult. Only a tooling-server crash mid-build leaves one small entry until the service is destroyed.
Verdict. REVIEW.md has no approve/request-changes rule, so the skill's default applied: a confirmed IMPORTANT computes REQUEST_CHANGES. It is posted as COMMENT because GitHub refuses that event on a self-authored PR. CLAUDE.md's QA gate (no critical, high or medium findings) is not met.
Coverage: this re-review was done as a direct pass at 7fc4ccd, without a separate /code-review run.
From the #2155 re-review (F05): 7fc4ccd recorded only builds, on the
wrong premise that syncs send no build_completed. They do: the tooling
server reports a sync's completion with the sync's own build ID
(ToolingApiServerImpl.doInitialize), so relocated syncs were reported
as relocated_output=false.
The bookkeeping moves into RelocatedBuilds, which records every
relocating sync or build when it is prepared and forgets it when it
completes. RelocatedBuildsTest covers the round trip; its sync case

Re-check of previous rounds (code read at 949e076, not from replies)
F01 (IMPORTANT, tree deleted under a live Quick Build session): fixed. The cleanup is gated on shouldDeleteTrees(afterInit, modelRelocated, isQuickBuildSessionLive()) (ProjectHandlerActivity.kt:1251). Live means any state but Idle or Prebuilding (:1305-1307). The rule is pure (BuildOutputLocation.kt:175-179) and tested (a live Quick Build session keeps the tree it still uses).
F02 (MINOR, spelling vs canonical path): fixed. treeFor keys the canonical path (BuildOutputLocation.kt:47-50). removeTreesOf(keep) skips the tree holding the model's build directory (:113-118), which the activity passes (ProjectHandlerActivity.kt:1258-1259). Both are tested.
F03 (MINOR, untested decisions): fixed. shouldDeleteTrees and shouldOfferDeferredSync are covered in BuildOutputLocationTest.
F04 (NITPICK, no relocation flag in analytics): fixed. relocated_output is on build_completed (BuildCompletedMetric.kt:25).
F05 (IMPORTANT, relocated syncs reported as false): fixed.
relocatedBuilds.prepared(buildInfo, extraArgs) is unconditional (GradleBuildService.kt:569).
Both completion paths reach completed(): onBuildSuccessful (:641) and onBuildFailed (:666) go through dispatchBuildResult (:682).
The tooling server reports a sync's completion with its own ID (ToolingApiServerImpl.kt:234, and :151 on failure).
Only the call site lacks a test; that's the MINOR inline.
Considered, not posted
Growth of the tracked set: an entry leaks only when prepareBuild ran and no completion is reported. That happens on an exception in executeTasks between doPrepareBuild and its try (ToolingApiServerImpl.kt:304-318), or on a tooling-server crash, one entry each for the service's lifetime. It's bounded in normal use.
If the client's prepareBuild takes longer than the server's 30 s wait (ToolingApiServerImpl.kt:247-260), the build runs without the client's arguments while it is recorded as relocated. The metric would be wrong, but that build already lacks the init script and every IDE argument, a pre-existing problem below this PR.
Verdict: computed COMMENT (one MINOR, nothing above it). REVIEW.md has no approve/request-changes rule, so the default applied; the PR is self-authored, so COMMENT in any case. CLAUDE.md ties the move to QA to having no critical, high or medium findings; this round's only finding is in the MINOR, safe-to-merge tier.
The startup sweep counted a project as gone only while its parent
folder existed, so deleting a folder of projects in a file manager left
every one of their trees in app storage until Clear storage. With the
parent missing too, the nearest folder that exists now decides: a
readable folder on a volume under /storage means the folders were
deleted, while /storage itself means the project's volume is not
mounted, and its tree is kept. Recents keeps its own rule.

Gradle syncs now relocate build output to app storage when the synced project model supports relocation. If an existing project has not relocated, the app offers a sync. Projects continue to use their synced model until they sync.
The app defers a sync request while the Gradle build slot is busy. It can also defer the relocation offer until the slot is free. The relocation preference and experiment gate are removed.
After a relocated initialization, the app removes eligible old project-folder output once. Cleanup avoids following symlinks and preserves output that may still be in use or belongs to a custom build directory.
Export now supports APKs, App Bundles, and plugin .cgp files. The export action offers available outputs and uses each output’s extension and MIME type.
Build-completion analytics now include the relocated_output field. ARCHITECTURE.md documents the relocated output directory.
The author reports that 168 tests passed across 15 services.builder suites. The author also reports device checks on Pixel 6 Pro and Galaxy Note20 Ultra, including faster builds. These results are author-reported.
Risk: Plugin .cgp export was not device-tested. The author reports that plugin projects could not sync because the bundled Maven repository lacked a required Guava JAR.
Limitation: Builds launched outside the IDE are not redirected and may continue to write output into project folders.
Risk: The cleanup message at 2× font scale and the deferred-offer activity wiring were not device-tested. The deferred-offer wiring also has no test.
Gradle syncs now prepare build-output relocation based on the synced model when the output tree can be prepared. The editor coordinates sync offers and one-time cleanup of eligible legacy output. The export action supports APKs, app bundles, and plugin files. The relocation preference and experiment gate are removed.
Changes: Build Output Relocation and Artifact Export
Sync arguments use a canonical project output tree. Build tracking records whether output was relocated, and the completion metric includes that result. The relocation preference and experiment gate are removed.
The editor offers relocation syncs when eligible and defers them while the Gradle slot is busy. After relocated initialization, cleanup removes eligible legacy output once and reports when folders were removed.
The action resolves APK, bundle, and plugin outputs, prompts when multiple outputs are available, and shares or copies the selected file using its MIME type and extension. Plugin installation uses a temporary copy.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 42788
Under certain aliased project paths, automatic cleanup can delete project files. Fix the containment checks before merging.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 0ab45
Automatic cleanup can reach outside the opened project through a linked parent directory and delete other app-accessible output. Activation requires a qualifying local filesystem layout and relocated initialization; no new privilege escalation is established.
Retained concerns
High · security · inferred: New automatic cleanup does not preserve physical project containment through symlinked ancestors. For example, a linked buildSrc directory can make the fixed candidate buildSrc/build resolve to a real directory outside the project. Lexical startsWith checks and a final-component NOFOLLOW_LINKS check can admit it, after which traversal deletes the external directory's contents. Modeled project and active-build exclusions are also lexical. This requires the link to exist, the target to be app-writable, and cleanup to run without its completion marker; it is not a demonstrated privilege escalation.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The containment failure can affect real build or cache directories outside the opened project that are reachable through candidate ancestors and writable with the app's existing filesystem authority. Exposure is local to that authority; the inspected path does not establish cross-device, cross-tenant, or operating-system privilege escalation.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A project filesystem layout containing a symlinked buildSrc ancestor can direct the new cleanup to an external real build directory. After relocated initialization, the lexical eligibility checks can accept that candidate and the deletion walk operates on its resolved target. Final-component and in-tree link protections do not block this path. This is a source-derived attack path, not a runtime-verified exploit.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — APK metadata path resolution and unsynchronized temporary-copy publication already existed at the merge base. The renamed utility preserves those mechanisms, including Quick Build proxy refusal and partial-file cleanup. They are pre-existing architecture conditions, not established new APK disclosure or publication concerns from this PR.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — The build slot serializes service-dispatched builds, but cleanup does not acquire that slot. Its Quick Build check precedes asynchronous deletion, leaving synchronization with every possible old-output writer unproven. The inspected evidence does not establish a reachable concurrent writer to retain a separate security concern.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Use resolved filesystem identity for root containment and protected-directory comparisons, reject candidates reached through unsafe ancestors, and preserve that identity through deletion. Canonical preflight checks alone should not be treated as protection against concurrent ancestor replacement.

and delete-with-project missed the tree until the next startup sweep.

Hal Eisen on #2151: deleting a project's tree, and the startup sweep,
used Kotlin's File.deleteRecursively, which follows a symlink to a
directory and deletes what it points to. The trees live on ext4, where
a build script, a CMake step or the terminal can leave such a link, so
deleting a project could delete files outside its tree. The fix was in
#2155 only (5d95f18), and this layer has to be safe to merge on its
own.
deleteTree now uses deleteWithoutFollowingLinks, the same file #2155
adds, and the sweep's listing of trees skips links
(NOFOLLOW_LINKS), so a link in gradle-build/ is never treated as a
tree. Each of the two new tests fails without its half of the fix.

CodeRabbit on #2149: a build script that sets its own build directory
overrides the relocation for that project alone. When the root does,
the sync model still puts the modules' output in the tree, but
modelRelocated looked at the root alone and returned false, so the
next non-sync build left out the relocation flags and built a module
into its project folder, where the model's APK listing does not look;
Quick Run could then pick a stale APK from the tree.
modelRelocated is now true when any project's build directory is in
the tree, so builds follow the model. The new test fails without the
fix. The same change was made in #2155 (55ebfde) while answering Hal
Eisen; this layer has to be right on its own.

Two findings by CodeRabbit on #2149/#2155, checked against the stack
tip:
- Installing a built plugin copies it to filesDir/temp first, because
an install deletes its input. A failed install (the plugin system
unavailable, a validation error after the copy), a copy that stopped
part-way, or a cancelled caller left that copy behind. The copy now
goes through installFromCopy, which always deletes it. The new tests
fail without the deletion: "expected to be false".
- The relocation banner is refused while a build holds the Gradle slot,
and nothing offered it again when the build ended. A refused offer
now waits for the slot (offerAgainIfBlockedByBuild), only when a
build is the reason: an offer already shown, or refused while the
project initializes, schedules nothing, so it cannot loop. The helper
is unit-tested; the activity wiring is not exercised by a test, and
the case needs the first offer to land during a build, which is rare.

Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
CodeRabbit on #2151: prepare writes the canonical path into the marker,
so a tree recorded under another spelling of the project path never
held that spelling in the test, which therefore could not catch
removeTreesOf comparing the raw marker text. The test now writes the
alias spelling into the marker, as an older build wrote it. With the
comparison made raw, it fails: expected 1, was 0.

…xport APK (#2151)
* ADFA-4930: delete relocated build output with its project, sweep orphans
Relocated build output outlived its project: deleting a project in
the IDE left its tree in app storage, and so did deleting, moving or
renaming it outside the IDE.
- Deleting a project (Recents' delete and the Delete projects screen,
both through RecentProjectsViewModel) deletes its trees.
- At startup, off the main thread, a sweep deletes the trees of

Trees are matched by their project-path marker rather than by key,
because deletion uses the canonical path and builds use
projectDirPath; a symlinked spelling of the same project would key
differently.

* ADFA-4930: Export APK from the editor toolbar
With relocated build output the built APK is in app-private storage,
where a file manager cannot reach it. A toolbar action, after Launch
app and shown only while relocation is available (experiments),
resolves the selected variant's APK from the synced model and offers:
- Share: the share sheet, through the existing FileProvider.
- Copy to Download: `<project>-<variant>.apk`, numbered when taken,
so an earlier export is never overwritten.
Long-press help uses TooltipTag.EDITOR_TOOLBAR_EXPORT_APK

* ADFA-4930: harden Export APK and tree deletion

* ADFA-4930: find Quick Build and plugin output via the project model
Quick Build's setup.json and a plugin project's .cgp were looked up
under `<project>/build`. With relocated build output that path holds
nothing, or a stale report from before the relocation, which Quick
Build would then read.
Both now resolve against the build directory the synced model gives:
the module's for setup.json, the root project's for the .cgp. The
model and the output agree because builds follow the last sync
(PR 1).
`QuickBuildTaskPaths.setupJson` is now relative to the build
directory, and the debugging doc lists the relocated location.

* ADFA-4930: pin the .cgp lookup and pass setupJson its build directory
From the #2150 review:
- The plugin .cgp lookup moves into `findPluginCgpFile(workspace,
variantName)`, so a test can pin it to the model's root build
directory. `PluginCgpLookupTest` fails against the old
`<project>/build/plugin` lookup.
- `QuickBuildTaskPaths.setupJson` takes the build directory and
returns a File, so a caller cannot resolve it against the module
folder by mistake.
- The fake module's default build directory is absolute, so it never
resolves against the test JVM's working directory.

…ents) (#2149)
* ADFA-4930: plan for moving Gradle build output off FUSE
Benchmarks on a Galaxy Note20 Ultra (Android 13) and a Pixel 6 Pro
(Android 17) show warm-daemon builds 24-35% faster with build output in
app-private storage, and redirecting only build/ and .gradle/ recovers
91% of that. The plan covers the redirect mechanism, the two consumers
that hard-code build/, output lifecycle, a 4-PR stack, validation and
draft Steps to QA.

* ADFA-4930: share Quick Build's project storage key
Moves QuickBuildScratch.projectKey into ProjectStorageKey.of, unchanged,
so relocated Gradle build output can key a project's tree the same way
Quick Build's scratch does. QuickBuildScratch.projectKey delegates to it.
No behavior change; the existing QuickBuildScratch key tests cover it.

* ADFA-4930: relocate Gradle build output behind a preference

* ADFA-4930: move ProjectStorageKey to :shared
Relocated Gradle build output is not a Quick Build concern, so the shared
project key moves from quickbuild:core to the cross-cutting :shared
module; quickbuild:core now depends on :shared. Imports and the Quick
Build debugging guide's link follow. No behavior change.

* ADFA-4930: gate build-output relocation behind experiments

* ADFA-4930: one flat, hashed build directory per project
Relocated build directories mirrored the Gradle path, so `:core:ui`
landed inside `:core`'s build directory (where `:core:clean` deletes
it), a subproject named `generated` or `intermediates` landed in its
parent's task outputs, and `:_root` collided with the root project.
Each project now gets `<build>/<name>-<hash>`: its last path segment
(`root` for `:`) plus a SHA-256 prefix of its full path, flat under
`main/` or under its nested build's key.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VKUthHVokuWKgP3ACLBii7
* ADFA-4930: apply build-output relocation at sync

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VKUthHVokuWKgP3ACLBii7
* ADFA-4930: point ProjectStorageKey at the plugin's copy

the derivation it copies; this adds the pointer back.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VKUthHVokuWKgP3ACLBii7
* ADFA-4930: no sync banner before the project initializes
Opening a project whose switch differs from its last sync showed the
sync-needed banner on the first resume, before initialization had
started, so the open's own sync applied the change and the banner
stayed up over the toolbar, swallowing taps on Run and Quick Build.
The editor now offers the sync only after the project has
initialized, and a successful initialization dismisses an offer it
has made stale, whichever way the sync was started.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VKUthHVokuWKgP3ACLBii7
* ADFA-4930: builds follow the synced model, not a record file

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VKUthHVokuWKgP3ACLBii7
* ADFA-4930: relocate included builds' output too
The init script plugin read the output directory from each build's own
start parameters. Gradle copies project properties into buildSrc's,
but not into an included build's, so an included build (includeBuild,
such as a build-logic of convention plugins) found no property and
kept its build output in the project folder. ARCHITECTURE.md and
BuildOutputRedirect said nested builds get a directory of their own.
The plugin now reads the property from the root build. The new
TestKit test runs a composite with an included build on Gradle 9.6.1;
without the fix the included build logs no relocation. An included
build's .gradle/ and .kotlin/ still stay in its folder: Gradle passes
neither setting to it.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VKUthHVokuWKgP3ACLBii7
* ADFA-4930: gate the relocation switch on an Experiment entry
Hal Eisen on #2149: stage made FeatureFlags.isExperimentsEnabled
internal to :common (44fda21, ADFA-6388), so BuildOutputLocation's
isAvailable() no longer compiles once this layer meets stage, and
EXPERIMENTS.md says to gate on Experiments.isOn(Experiment.X), never
the raw flag. With stage merged in, the old line fails :app's compile
("it is internal in 'common'").
The switch is now gated on a BUILD_OUTPUT_RELOCATION entry. Its Jira
key is ADFA-4930 itself rather than a separate graduate-or-remove
ticket: #2155, in the same ticket, turns relocation on for everyone
and deletes the entry with isAvailable().

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VKUthHVokuWKgP3ACLBii7
* ADFA-4930: relocate when any project's output is in the tree
CodeRabbit on #2149: a build script that sets its own build directory
overrides the relocation for that project alone. When the root does,
the sync model still puts the modules' output in the tree, but
modelRelocated looked at the root alone and returned false, so the
next non-sync build left out the relocation flags and built a module
into its project folder, where the model's APK listing does not look;

* ADFA-4930: find Quick Build and plugin output via the project model (#2150)

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VKUthHVokuWKgP3ACLBii7
* ADFA-4930: pin the .cgp lookup and pass setupJson its build directory
From the #2150 review:
- The plugin .cgp lookup moves into `findPluginCgpFile(workspace,
variantName)`, so a test can pin it to the model's root build
directory. `PluginCgpLookupTest` fails against the old
`<project>/build/plugin` lookup.
- `QuickBuildTaskPaths.setupJson` takes the build directory and
returns a File, so a caller cannot resolve it against the module
folder by mistake.
- The fake module's default build directory is absolute, so it never
resolves against the test JVM's working directory.

* ADFA-4930: delete relocated output with its project, sweep orphans, Export APK (#2151)
- At startup, off the main thread, a sweep deletes the trees of
projects that no longer exist. A project on a volume that is not
mounted is not gone, and a tree without a marker is left alone.
Trees are matched by their project-path marker rather than by key,
because deletion uses the canonical path and builds use
projectDirPath; a symlinked spelling of the same project would key
differently.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VKUthHVokuWKgP3ACLBii7
("project.export.apk"); its documentation.db text is a separate SQL
script for OfflineDocumentationTools.

* ADFA-4930: plan doc matches PR 3's lifecycle and Export APK
Docs only: where deletion hooks in, how trees are matched, what the
sweep keeps, and that Export APK offers both the share sheet and a
copy in Download.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VKUthHVokuWKgP3ACLBii7
* ADFA-4930: harden Export APK and tree deletion

* ADFA-4930: sweep trees of projects deleted with their folder
The startup sweep counted a project as gone only while its parent
folder existed, so deleting a folder of projects in a file manager left
every one of their trees in app storage until Clear storage. With the
parent missing too, the nearest folder that exists now decides: a
readable folder on a volume under /storage means the folders were
deleted, while /storage itself means the project's volume is not
mounted, and its tree is kept. Recents keeps its own rule.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VKUthHVokuWKgP3ACLBii7
* ADFA-4930: record the canonical project path in the marker
A project opened through a symlinked root recorded the link in its
tree's marker. Recents deletes the real folder, which leaves the link
dangling, so the marker no longer canonicalized to the deleted project
and delete-with-project missed the tree until the next startup sweep.
The marker now holds the canonical path, the same spelling deletion
compares against. Found by CodeRabbit on #2151.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VKUthHVokuWKgP3ACLBii7
* ADFA-4930: delete output trees without following symlinks

Compare canonical paths for cleanup exclusions.
When dir is reached through a symlinked parent, canonicalOrNull(dir) can resolve to the same directory as a model path with another spelling. The current exclusions still compare lexical projects and inUse values with lexical dir, so a protected project or active build directory can pass both checks. Because NOFOLLOW_LINKS only checks the final candidate entry, cleanup may then delete that protected directory.
Keep the lexical paths for relocation detection and dir for the no-follow check. Canonicalize the protected paths and compare them with the canonical candidate. Fail closed if protected-path canonicalization fails.

ADFA-4930
PR 4 of 4 in the stack from
docs/superpowers/plans/2026-10-14-adfa-4930-build-output-off-fuse.md, based on #2151, then #2150 and #2149. Merge those first. This PR's diff is nineteen commits plus five merges bringing in fixes from lower in the stack (#2151's sweep 34b6603 and marker 5f0afab, #2149's included builds 0b2f870, 315baa6:stage, #2149's experiment gate and #2151's no-follow tree deletion, and 86c4764: #2149's mixed-layout fix, already here as 55ebfde). 88a8f49 graduates theBUILD_OUTPUT_RELOCATIONexperiment that #2149 adds, deleting its entry, as this PR turns relocation on for everyone. Review by commit: 6d6e126 is renames only.Why.
What it does
relocating-syncafter its model loads, so a sync that fails or is cancelled leaves the offer standing, 8f9392d) or when the tree cannot be written, so a project a sync cannot relocate doesn't get the banner after every sync and every open (55ebfde, Hal Eisen's second review). The text and buttons are short so Sync stays usable at 2x font scale; the shared banner's layout problem is ADFA-6572.:appbuilt intoapp/build, where Run and Export don't look.GradleBuildService.buildSlotBusy, d9cbebe): a build's listener can run before the build frees the slot, so a check made when the build flags drop could find it busy and never check again (Hal Eisen's review). The generic sync banner says to sync once the build ends.OldBuildOutputdeletes thebuild/of each project the model relocated (only those: a project whose build script sets its own build directory keeps itsbuild/, 5b25a22), and.gradle/and.kotlin/at the root and inbuildSrc, records that in the tree once everything is gone (a deletion that fails is retried at the next initialization), and tells the user once: "Old build output was removed from the project folder. Export gets your latest build." A staleapp-debug.apkwhere a file manager finds it misleads, and the copy doubles the space a project takes. Kept:buildSrc/.gradle/and an included build's.gradle/and.kotlin/(still in use); abuildfolder that is or holds a module, or that the model still builds into;buildSrc/build/, sincebuildSrcis not in the model (714ef05); anything outside the project folder, checked on canonical paths so a linked module folder cannot lead out of it; symlinks, which are never followed. Skipped while a Quick Build session is live. A later terminal build's output is the user's to keep.outputs/bundle/<variant>/under the module's build directory, as the model has no bundle listing), and a plugin project's.cgp, with a chooser when there is more than one. Each goes to the share sheet or to Download. Installing a built plugin deleted the.cgpit was given; the build's install now hands it a copy, so the plugin can still be exported. The action keeps its id and tooltip tag.filesDir/temp, and nowinstallFromCopydeletes it (two tests fail without it). A relocation offer refused because a build held the Gradle slot is offered again when the build ends, only when a build is the reason. That wiring has no test and has not been run on a device.File.deleteRecursively, which follows a symlink to a directory and deletes what is inside it.build_completedgainsrelocated_output, for syncs and builds alike, so durations can be split by output location. It isn't onbuild_started, which can already exceed Firebase's 25-parameter limit.ARCHITECTURE.mddescribes where build output lives, and why code must read it from the synced model.Verified

With the marker deleted and two stale folders recreated, reopening removed them and showed the message.:app:bundleDebug, it offered "APK" and "App Bundle (.aab)"; the bundle was atoutputs/bundle/debug/app-debug.aabin the tree, and Copy to Download savedBuild Apps Anywhere-debug.aab(3.9 MB).isRequested()had three callers (the sync path, the banner, syncPending's default); all are gone.removeTreesOfhad one caller passingkeep, now gone. OnlyBuildOutputLocation.deleteTreein the stack deleted withdeleteRecursively..cgp. Both plugin projects on the Pixel failed to sync before relocation mattered: their buildscript needsguava-33.3.1-jre.jar, and the bundled Maven repo has only its.pomand.module. This is unrelated to ADFA-4930.Docs and QA. The tooltip SQL attached to ADFA-4930 (
tooltips-adfa-4930.sql, documentation.db in OfflineDocumentationTools) now covers Export only and deletes the removed switch's tooltip if an earlier version added it; checked on a copy of documentation.db, run twice. The ticket's Steps to QA cover the stack as it is now: no switch, old output removed once, and Export of APKs, App Bundles and plugins.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
