feat(setup-audit): warn at 0.1% and flag 1% of traces without a root span - #1564
Conversation
…span TRC-02 now measures the org-wide share of traces whose root span never arrived, over every span instead of only non-root Server/Consumer spans, so a lost root that was a trace's only entry span is counted. Above 0.1% it warns, above 1% it is critical.
…ootless rate - Rootless traces made only of spans the ingest sampler keeps from dropped traces (errors, slow spans) count as sampled, not as lost roots. - Only traces whose first span starts inside the window are counted, so a long-running trace that began earlier is not read as rootless. - The systemic upstream finding needs every sizable service above 95% and still names the services. - A failed rootless scan no longer takes the orphan checks with it.

🟡 Long-running traces falsely lack roots
When a trace's root predates parentStart and its remaining spans start inside the window, auditRootlessTracesSQL counts it as rootless. The root and earlier spans fall outside both scans, inflating the warning or critical rate.
Learn more
The root check scans traces and the root-span index over a two-hour range. It uses the earliest span visible in that range to decide whether a trace started in the final hour. A trace with a root older than the scan and only later children in the final hour has an apparent start in that hour and no visible root. Its children are counted as missing a root even though the trace has one.
Example: A root starts at 08:00, and its next span starts at 10:10. With parentStart at 09:00 and childStart at 10:00, only the 10:10 span enters the query. The trace counts as rootless although the 08:00 root exists.
Recommended fix: Check root presence independently of the bounded start-time scan for traces admitted to the audit, or explicitly exclude traces whose earlier history cannot be established. Keep the workload bounds on the raw traces scan while adjusting the root lookup/window contract.

Not changing this one. The HAVING already drops any trace with a span in the hour before the window, so this needs a root older than parentStart and no spans at all for 60+ minutes before the window. Catching it means a root lookup with no lower bound on trace_list_mv (or trace_index), and those per-partition seeks are what #1563 just bounded. A trace that sits idle for an hour under one root is the long-lived-root pattern, and TRC-02's fix hint already names it (start a new trace per step and link it). If it shows up in a real org, the next step is a bounded trace_index lookup on the rootless candidates only.

🟡 Service cap inflates org-wide rootless rate
When auditRootlessTracesSQL returns over 1,000 service groups, the limit drops low-rootless services before the org-wide rate is calculated. Their traces vanish from the denominator, so a healthy org can receive a false warning or critical finding.
Learn more
The query groups traces by entry service and limits the ordered results. The TRC-02 evaluation adds traceCount and missing-root counts from only those returned groups to calculate an org-wide percentage. A service outside the limit contributes nothing to the denominator, even when all its traces have roots. The rate therefore depends on the number of services and can rise sharply after the result cap is reached.
Example: Suppose one service has 100 rootless traces out of 1,000, while 1,000 other services each have 1,000 healthy traces. Ordering by rootless count can exclude one healthy service, shrinking the denominator. With many excluded healthy services the displayed percentage increases further instead of remaining at the true org-wide rate.
Recommended fix: Return an uncapped org-wide total and missing count separately from the capped per-service attribution rows, or otherwise guarantee the aggregate includes every service.

Fixed in 193863a: rows now order by traceCount DESC before the 1,000 cap, so past it the smallest services drop out (a negligible share of both numerator and denominator) instead of the zero-rootless ones that would inflate the rate. Above ~1,000 services the rate is approximate, not biased upward.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winDo not infer systemic attribution from the capped service list.
auditRootlessTracesSQLlimits the result to 1,000 services, butsizable.every(...)checks only those returned rows. The org-wide totals still include omitted services. Therefore, the top 1,000 services can exceed 95% rootless traces while an omitted service with at least 50 traces does not. TRC-02 can then emit the upstream-cause message incorrectly.Gate this branch on an uncapped all-service eligibility result. Until that result is available, use a conservative guard:
