feat(database): estimate a collection's count from engine statistics - #1053
Adds Database::estimateCount(string $collection): ?int, which reads a collection's row count from engine statistics instead of scanning it.
Postgres:n_live_tup from pg_stat_user_tables (updated on every commit), falling back to pg_class.reltuples when it is zero (standbys, after a stats reset). Returns null for never-analyzed tables (reltuples = -1), missing tables, and shared tables, whose statistics cover every tenant.
Every other adapter: returns null (base Adapter default), so callers fall back to count().
Pool delegates it; ReadWritePool routes it as a read.
Why
A self-hosted Appwrite user reported 20–45% IO pressure stalls lasting ~25 minutes every hour. The cause is Appwrite's hourly stats-resources sweep, which runs an exact COUNT on every collection table. Reproduced locally on Postgres 18 with a 3M-row (3.5 GB) collection and a cold cache:
Table state
Exact COUNT(1)
estimateCount()
Just vacuumed
18 MB read, 66 ms (index-only scan)
1 block, 0.05 ms
2% random updates since vacuum
860 MB read, 10.2 s
1 block, 0.05 ms
20% updates since vacuum
3.5 GB read (whole heap), 30 s IO wait
1 block, 0.05 ms
Scattered writes clear the visibility map, so the index-only scan turns into heap fetches. In a full sweep, collection counts were 3.6 GB of the 4.3 GB read.
Accuracy with default autovacuum (2M-row table): n_live_tup matched the exact count after +150k inserts, +450k inserts and a 25% delete. reltuples alone was 33% stale after the delete until autovacuum ran, which is why it is only the fallback.
Tests
Unit (PostgresCollectionSizeTest): reads statistics, -1 / missing table → null, shared tables → null without a query, failure → DatabaseException.
E2E (CollectionTests::testEstimateCount): Postgres returns the exact count after analyzeCollection; other adapters and shared tables return null.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added an API for retrieving estimated document counts for a collection. PostgreSQL estimates use available table statistics and may be approximate; the API returns no estimate when statistics are unavailable or the adapter does not support estimates.
Tests
Added coverage for estimated counts, unavailable statistics, shared tables, and database errors.
An exact COUNT on Postgres reads the whole heap once scattered writes clear
the visibility map: 3.5 GB and 30s of disk reads for a 3M-row table. The
statistics collector already tracks live tuples per table, updated on every
commit, so callers that only need a figure (usage sweeps) can read it in
under a millisecond. Adapters without a usable estimate, and shared tables
whose statistics span every tenant, return null so the caller counts.

Walkthrough
The change adds a nullable collection-count estimate method to the adapter and collection APIs. PostgreSQL obtains estimates from table statistics when available. Tests cover adapter routing, PostgreSQL results, and collection-level behavior.

Summary
Estimate API and adapter routing src/Database/Adapter.php, src/Database/Trait/Collections.php, src/Database/Adapter/Pool.php, src/Database/Adapter/ReadWritePool.php
The base adapter returns null by default. The collection trait resolves the collection ID and requests its estimate. The adapter pool forwards the call, and the read/write pool classifies it as a read.
PostgreSQL estimates and validation src/Database/Adapter/Postgres.php, tests/unit/Adapter/PostgresCollectionSizeTest.php, tests/e2e/Adapter/Scopes/CollectionTests.php
Postgres returns null for shared tables, otherwise reads table statistics and validates the result. Unit tests cover statistics, missing or invalid estimates, and query failures. The end-to-end test checks collection estimates.
Collection estimates can remain positive after all documents are deleted, and some database failures receive inconsistent handling. The change is low risk with these limitations explicitly accepted; otherwise, correct them before merging.

NULLIF treated a primary's zero n_live_tup as missing statistics, so a table
emptied since its last ANALYZE reported the stale reltuples. Only a standby,
which collects no statistics, now falls back to reltuples. Statement
preparation also moves inside the try, and the PDOException is kept as the
previous exception so retry classification still sees it.
