What is Scaffoldry?

In higher education, research institutes, and federated organizations, central IT and individual departments are constantly in tension. Central IT needs data integrity, FERPA/HIPAA compliance, and audit trails; departments need the agility to build their own tools without waiting years for central ERP changes.

Scaffoldry is an open, sovereign platform that lets non-technical domain experts build custom business workflows with AI, backed by a cryptographic decision ledger and machine-readable governance.

Core Architecture

  • Front-of-House: TanStack (React + Table + Query + Form)
  • Authorization & Policy: Cedar Policy Engine
  • In-Memory Calculation: Apache Arrow & DataFusion
  • Durable Store: PostgreSQL
  • Decision & Audit Ledger: Embedded Git
  • Compliance Standard: NIST OSCAL

Principles

  1. Sovereignty First: Built entirely on foundation-governed open source with zero proprietary cloud lock-in. Runs on infrastructure the institution controls.
  2. Data Has a Format: Structured data gets a structured format and a published schema before anything reads it.
  3. The Reader is an Engineer: Enterprise credibility and rigorous threat modeling are requirements of the product, not courtesies paid later.
  4. Write for People: Clear, accessible, scan-friendly documentation and intuitive end-user interfaces.
