The slot under a tool's icon was 17dp deep for a 4dp bar, so the bar sat far under the icon and a tool carrying no bar read as empty. It is 12dp now, deep enough for the size tool's caption and no more, and a tool is 40dp rather than 48dp tall. Pro's badge follows the tools' height, which is what made it look stretched. The strip stood 56dp tall, and most of that was space between a tool's icon and the bar that says which colour it applies - the slot was 17dp deep for a 4dp bar. A tool with no bar to show read as empty for it.
The strip measures 46dp where it measured 56dp.
Checked on a Pixel 9 Pro, in both strips: a pdf's marking tools, and a document's formatting with a selection, where the size tool's "12 pt" still reads in full.
