MPI_Issend and MPI_Ssend are unimplemented, so a program that calls them aborts. This adds both: MPI_Issend follows MPI_Isend, and MPI_Ssend is MPI_Issend and MANA's MPI_Wait in both MANA_P2P_WAIT modes.

A checkpoint can drain an MPI_Issend's message into MANA's buffer before the receive starts, and the MPI_Issend must not complete then. MPI only bounds its completion from below, so every MPI_Issend pending at a checkpoint waits for an ack. At the start of the drain, the sender posts a notice to the receiver through the KVDB: the envelope, the number of same-envelope sends posted since, and a per-sender ack tag. When the drain sees the MPI_Issend complete, its request becomes the receive of the ack. After its drain loop, the receiver marks the buffered message (the ack is sent when the application takes it) or, if the application has already received it, sends the ack at resume or restart. Restart replays the ack's receive like any other. In blocking mode, the lower half is now closed to application threads during the drain even without MPI_THREAD_MULTIPLE, so only the checkpoint thread completes an MPI_Issend that has a notice.

The p2p_ssend* and p2p_issend* tests (and MPI_SSEND/MPI_ISSEND in fortran_p2p) check that neither call completes before its receive across checkpoints, bursts of checkpoints, a restart before the receive, large messages and varying delays. They also cover an MPI_Issend between MPI_Isends with its envelope, two MPI_Issends with one envelope (MPI_Testany, MPI_Waitall), the NBX algorithm, MPI_Allreduce right after MPI_Ssend, probes, wildcard receives, a non-world communicator, and a receiver blocked on another rank.

Tested on Hercules (Intel MPI 2021.7.1, verbs, 2 nodes): the suite passes 39 of 40 in polling and in blocking mode; attributes fails without this PR too (#524).

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds MPI_Ssend and MPI_Issend support. Point-to-point drains track synchronous-send requests and acknowledgments. The test suite adds synchronous-send scenarios across checkpoint, ordering, communicator, probe, wildcard, and Fortran cases.

Changes: MPI synchronous-send support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Declare and implement synchronous sends
mpi-proxy-split/mpi-wrappers/*, mpi-proxy-split/virtual_id.h, mpi-proxy-split/p2p_log_replay.*
The wrappers expose MPI_Ssend and MPI_Issend, dispatch synchronous requests, classify them as ISSEND_REQUEST, and track sends issued after pending synchronous-send envelopes.
Coordinate drained synchronous sends
mpi-proxy-split/p2p_drain_send_recv.*, mpi-proxy-split/mpi_plugin.cpp, mpi-proxy-split/lower_half_ckpt.cpp
The drain publishes synchronous-send notices, associates acknowledgments with buffered messages, sends owed acknowledgments after delivery, and updates restart, presuspend, communicator, and statistics handling.
Build and run synchronous-send tests
mpi-proxy-split/test/*, mpi-proxy-split/test/fortran_p2p.f90
The harness builds and registers synchronous-send tests covering completion, ordering, communicators, collectives, probes, wildcards, blocked sends, checkpoint variants, and Fortran calls.

Applications using this valid communicator-lifetime pattern can abort during checkpoint processing; the metadata must remain available until the synchronous send is settled.

The change makes synchronous sends work across checkpoints and restarts. The inspected paths preserve receiver-dependent completion without establishing a new privilege or cross-job access path. Recovery and deployment-isolation coverage remain incomplete.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected protocol couples completion and checkpoint progress across participating MPI world ranks, not just the calling thread. This bounds the observed operational scope to the MPI computation; deployment-level cross-job or tenant isolation is not established by these sources.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Caller-provided communicator, destination, and tag enter the existing MPI handle-translation path. Drain coordination translates communicator-local ranks to world ranks and scopes KVDB records by computation identity and a restart-persistent drain count. These are routing and matching controls, not evidence of coordinator authentication or isolation from a compromised peer.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Drain completion does not free the virtual acknowledgment request retained by the acknowledgment vector. It maps the underlying request to MPI_REQUEST_NULL and removes the pending-log entry. A later PMPI_Test recognizes this completed mapping and frees the virtual handle, countering the suspected stale-alias failure.

@pera-noaa Thanks for the PR. But I have some concern about this protocol.

The biggest one is that finishSsend() makes the application thread wait until mana_state is RUNNING, and that includes the whole CKPT_COLLECTIVE phase. The Collective Clock needs a rank that is behind the target to keep running until it reaches it. Suppose a rank finishes an MPI_Ssend during that phase, and its next call is a collective that another rank has already entered. Then drain_mpi_collective() never converges and the checkpoint hangs. The new tests don't call a collective inside their loops, so they can't catch this. The existing wrappers only wait out CKPT_P2P, and this one should do the same. Could you also add a test that calls MPI_Allreduce right after the MPI_Ssend?

We are also happy to arrange meetings to discuss this in more details.

@xuyao00 Thanks, you're right: with the previous version, p2p_ssend_collective (MPI_Allreduce right after MPI_Ssend) hangs exactly as you describe. I've replaced the protocol: MPI_Ssend now waits out only CKPT_P2P, like the other wrappers, and the drain settles a drained MPI_Ssend through the KVDB, so nothing waits for RUNNING. That test and the new ones pass in both modes; the updated description has the details. Happy to meet if it helps the review.

Disambiguate the buffered message for each MPI_Issend.

If an MPI_Isend is posted after an MPI_Issend with the same communicator, source, and tag, both messages can be buffered during the drain. markSsendAck selects the last matching message, so the acknowledgment can attach to the later MPI_Isend. The MPI_Issend can then remain pending until the later message is consumed.

Record a per-send sequence number and include it in the notice. Use that sequence to select the MPI_Issend message instead of selecting the last envelope match.

@pera-noaa Thanks for the rework. The semantics are right now: a drained MPI_Ssend returns only after the application's own receive takes its message from MANA's buffer, and the wrapper no longer holds back the Collective Clock. I'd like two changes before we merge.

1. Drop the reply round

MPI 5.0 gives only a lower bound for the completion of a synchronous send. It "will complete successfully only if a matching receive is started" (§3.4), and it "can complete only if a matching receive has been started and has been matched with the send" (§3.7). Nothing requires it to return as soon as the receive starts. So the receiver can ack every notice, and the sender can always wait for the ack:

  • When the drain sees an MPI_Issend complete, it turns the request into the receive of its ack at once, as applySsendReplies() does for an "ack" reply now. The request never maps to MPI_REQUEST_NULL in between.
  • After its drain loop, the receiver goes through its notices. If the message is in MANA's buffer, it sets ack_to, as now. If it is not, the application has already received the message, and the receiver sends the ack on resume or restart, before mana_state = RUNNING.

Both drains have received every message when their loop ends, so this needs no extra pass and no extra barrier. It removes the ssend_reply_* keys, applySsendReplies(), the MPI:P2P-Ssend-Answered barrier, ssend_pass with its two extra loop passes, and ssendNotInFlight() with its cases in completePendingP2pRequests(), completePendingIsends() and countPendingIsends(). The cost is one 0-byte message for an MPI_Ssend whose receive had already started at the checkpoint. That MPI_Ssend then returns after the checkpoint, which the standard allows.

2. Add MPI_Issend

MPI_Ssend is already MPI_Issend and MPI_Wait inside, and the guarantee matters even more for MPI_Issend. The NBX algorithm (MPI_Issend, MPI_Iprobe(MPI_ANY_SOURCE) and MPI_Ibarrier, used by PETSc's PetscCommBuildTwoSided) takes a completed MPI_Issend as proof that the receiver has matched the message. If a drain completes it early, the sender enters MPI_Ibarrier early, the receiver can stop probing, and the message stays in MANA's buffer forever. Please add the wrapper in this PR, so that the protocol is designed for it. Three things change with it:

  • After an MPI_Issend, the application can post more sends, so the rule in markSsendAck() (the last buffered message with this envelope) no longer holds. This is CodeRabbit's comment: an MPI_Isend with the same envelope gets the mark, and two MPI_Issends with the same envelope fail JASSERT(last->ack_to == -1). Messages with one envelope are non-overtaking, the drain receives all of them, and a receive always takes a buffered message first. So for one envelope, the buffered messages are the last ones that the sender sent. If the notice gives the number of sends with the same envelope that the sender posted after the MPI_Issend (j), the receiver marks the (j+1)th buffered match from the end. If there are fewer, the application has received the message. The count costs one branch per send while no MPI_Issend is pending.
  • A rank can have several MPI_Issends that wait for acks from the same receiver, also from earlier checkpoints, and the receiver can take their messages in any order. With tag 0 for every ack, an ack can complete the wrong request early. The notice should carry the tag of its ack, for example from a per-sender counter.
  • Tests: an MPI_Issend and an MPI_Isend with the same envelope across a checkpoint; two MPI_Issends with the same envelope; completion through MPI_Waitall and MPI_Testany; and an NBX loop with checkpoints and restarts that checks that no message is lost.

With this, MPI_Ssend is MPI_Issend plus MPI_Wait, with no code of its own.

I also have a question about the change in mpi_plugin.cpp; it is inline.

A question about this change. Before, blocking mode left the lower half open during the drain when the checkpoint thread has no lower-half TLS of its own (the library did not give MPI_THREAD_MULTIPLE, or create_lh_thread_for_extra_tls() failed), and closed it only after the drain. Now, in that case too, application threads that are not blocked in the library must leave, and they cannot enter until the drain ends. The comment in lower_half_ckpt.cpp also no longer says "with MPI_THREAD_MULTIPLE".

  • Which failure does this fix? Is there a test that fails without it?
  • Did any of your runs use blocking mode without MPI_THREAD_MULTIPLE? If the library gives it, the new branch does not run.
  • With the change in my review, an MPI_Issend never maps to MPI_REQUEST_NULL during the drain, so the reason in the comment goes away. I think the gate is still needed, so that only the checkpoint thread can complete an MPI_Issend that has a notice. If you agree, please put this change in its own commit and give that reason in the comment.

Both were in mpi_unimplemented_wrappers.txt, so a program that called
them aborted with "wrapper: `MPI_Ssend` not implemented". MPI_Issend
follows MPI_Isend, and MPI_Ssend is MPI_Issend and MANA's MPI_Wait in
both MANA_P2P_WAIT modes, so no thread waits in the lower half. The
request is logged as an MPI_Isend's is. The Fortran bindings are added
too.

A checkpoint can still complete an MPI_Issend whose message it drains
before the receive starts; the commit after next fixes that.
p2p_ssend passes messages around a ring with MPI_Ssend, with the
receivers waiting; p2p_ssend_wait (-w) makes the senders wait, so that
checkpoints find them in MPI_Ssend. fortran_p2p adds an MPI_SSEND, or
MPI_ISSEND and MPI_WAIT in odd iterations.
The P2P drain can receive an MPI_Issend's message into MANA's buffer
before the application posts its receive, and then complete the
MPI_Issend: MPI_Ssend returns early, and an NBX loop (MPI_Issend,
MPI_Iprobe, MPI_Ibarrier) can leave its last message in the buffer.
MPI only bounds an MPI_Issend's completion from below, so every
MPI_Issend pending at a checkpoint now waits for an ack:

- At the start of the drain, the sender posts a notice to the receiver
  in the KVDB: the envelope, the number of sends with that envelope
  posted since the MPI_Issend (later_sends, counted only while an
  MPI_Issend is pending), and a tag for the ack from a per-sender
  counter.
- When the drain sees the MPI_Issend complete, its request becomes the
  receive of the ack on a MANA communicator, so it never maps to
  MPI_REQUEST_NULL.
- After its drain loop, the receiver goes through its notices. The
  buffered messages with one envelope are the last ones sent, so if
  more than later_sends are buffered, it marks the (later_sends + 1)th
  from the end, and sends the ack when the application takes it from
  the buffer. Otherwise the application has received the message, and
  the receiver sends the ack at resume or restart, before RUNNING.

After the drain, the ack and its receive are ordinary messages and
requests, so restart replays the receive. An MPI_Issend whose receive
had started before the checkpoint costs one 0-byte message and returns
after the checkpoint.
In blocking mode, the checkpoint thread closed the lower half before
the P2P drain only if it had a lower-half TLS of its own (the library
gave MPI_THREAD_MULTIPLE). Otherwise application threads stayed free
to enter until after the drain, and one in MANA's MPI_Wait or MPI_Test
could see an MPI_Issend complete once the drain received its message:
the MPI_Issend completes before its receive starts, without the ack,
while the drain turns the same request into the receive of the ack.
So the checkpoint thread now closes the lower half in both cases,
except to a thread blocked in MPI_Recv, MPI_Send or MPI_Rsend: only the
checkpoint thread completes an MPI_Issend that has a notice.

Intel MPI grants MPI_THREAD_MULTIPLE, so the old branch never ran in
our tests. With the lower half forced to ask for MPI_THREAD_FUNNELED,
5 of 5 MPI_Ssend/MPI_Issend tests fail in blocking mode without this
change (senders abort with "double free or corruption", or an
MPI_Issend completes before its receive), and pass with it.

@xuyao00 Reworked as you suggested, in 5 commits on main. The reply round is gone: a drained MPI_Issend becomes the receive of its ack, and MPI_Ssend is MPI_Issend + MPI_Wait. Each notice carries j and its own ack tag. One refinement: j is counted before a send enters the lower half, so a race can only delay the ack. On mpi_plugin.cpp:915: it fixed nothing we had seen, since Intel MPI here always grants MPI_THREAD_MULTIPLE. Forced to MPI_THREAD_FUNNELED, 5 of 5 Ssend tests fail without it, so it's now its own commit with your reason. Suite 39/40 in both modes (attributes is #524); each new test fails on its mutant.

Following up on my comment above: I found the cause, and it is in the harness, not in the Ssend protocol.

1. p2p_ssend_burst: the next checkpoint is requested before the ranks resume

dmtcp_command -bc returns as soon as the coordinator has every image (recordCkptFilename() in dmtcp_coordinator.cpp). At that point the ranks are still in DMTCP_EVENT_RESUME. With burst=3, checkpoint() sends the next -bc at once. startCheckpoint() then refuses it, because the computation is not in the RUNNING state: dmtcp_command prints "Error, computation not in running state" and exits with 2. checkpoint() ignores the result and waits 60 s for images that never come. In both CI attempts, the application kept running during the wait: restart-1.out goes from iteration 2 to 31. The test passes locally and in the ubuntu:26.04 image on my machine, because the resume finishes before the next dmtcp_command starts.

To confirm, I added a 300 ms sleep to EVENT_RESUME and ran the test in ubuntu:26.04. The second -bc returned 2, and the test failed in the same way as in CI. It passed when checkpoint() first waited for all ranks to run:

  def checkpoint(self):
    # "-bc" returns when the images are written, before the ranks resume, and
    # the coordinator refuses a checkpoint until they all run again.
    self.wait_for(lambda: self.status() == (self.test.ranks, True),
                  "the ranks to run")
    before = set(self.image_inodes().items())
    r = self.command("-bc") # May return before the images are written.
    if r.returncode != 0:
      raise Failure("dmtcp_command -bc: " + r.stdout.strip())

With the return-code check, a refused checkpoint fails at once and says why, instead of after 60 s.

2. p2p_ssend_collective will be flaky: a late rank delays the Collective Clock

This test passed in CI, but locally it timed out once in about 30 runs, and several runs took 45–67 s. With MANA_DRAIN_STATS=1, all the time is in the collective phase (1 s to more than 60 s per checkpoint). The P2P drain takes less than 1 ms. This does not come from your protocol: with MPI_Send in place of MPI_Ssend, the test behaves the same (one timeout in 12 runs). Pair 0 waits inside MPI_Allreduce while pair 1 arrives up to 200 ms later. An attempt of drain_mpi_collective() runs 200 short rounds and then sleeps 1 s, so most attempts fail. With a 20 ms wait for pair 1 (wait_ms = mt_rank / 2 == 0 ? 2 : 20), the collective phase took 10–30 ms in 12 of 12 runs. A checkpoint still finds pair 1's sender in MPI_Ssend most of the time. Could you use 20 ms? The Clock itself needs a separate fix.

Minor (a follow-up PR is fine)

MPI allows MPI_Comm_free while an MPI_Issend on that communicator is still pending. But MANA's MPI_Comm_free frees the virtual ID at once, so at the next checkpoint the sender fails the JASSERT in commName() ("Unknown communicator").

p2p_ssend_sync sends a marker after MPI_Ssend returns; the receiver
waits, probing for the marker, before it posts the receive. Variants:
-b (p2p_ssend_burst: checkpoints in a row, autotest.py: burst), -r
(p2p_ssend_restart: restart right after the checkpoint, autotest.py:
restart_now), -l (4 MiB messages), -x (varying receiver delays).
For checkpoints in a row, autotest.py now waits for the last one to
resume (the coordinator refuses a checkpoint until then) and fails
if dmtcp_command does.
p2p_ssend_collective calls MPI_Allreduce right after MPI_Ssend;
p2p_ssend_probe checks that a probed message stays probed;
p2p_ssend_wildcard receives with MPI_ANY_SOURCE; p2p_ssend_order sends
an MPI_Ssend after MPI_Sends with the same envelope; p2p_ssend_comm
uses a communicator whose ranks differ from the world's;
p2p_ssend_blocked sends to a rank blocked in MPI_Recv for another
sender.

p2p_issend_envelope posts an MPI_Issend between two MPI_Isends with its
envelope; an ack on the earlier message completes it early, and one on
the later message never. p2p_issend_twice posts two MPI_Issends with
one envelope and one with another, which is received first, and
completes them with MPI_Testany, reporting each completion; with -w
(p2p_issend_waitall), with MPI_Waitall.  p2p_issend_nbx runs the NBX
algorithm (MPI_Issend, MPI_Iprobe(MPI_ANY_SOURCE), MPI_Ibarrier) and
checks that every message is received in its round.

CI failed in the new p2p_ssend_burst, from the harness, not MPI_Issend: the burst sent the next checkpoint before the last one had resumed, the coordinator refused it, and autotest.py ignored that. autotest.py now waits for RUNNING and fails if dmtcp_command does (in the last commit). On my fork's CI, without the wait 4 of 6 runs are refused; with it 10 of 10 pass and the suite passes 40 of 40, as does this PR's CI now.
