Hi @alan-lira , Sorry that we didn't reply to your PRs earlier. We are still in the middle of doing a new MANA release which fixes some minor bugs, but also does some refactoring and enhancements. The runtime overhead of using MANA will become almost zero (less than 1%) after this. We are also creating a new version of the unit tests. |
|
Hi @alan-lira, And we're now doing the 1.5.0 release. Would you be interested in converting your draft PR into something that we can review? Then we can review all of your PRs. In the next week or two we will then do a major release (2.0) that also supports CUDA-aware MPI. |
|
Dear @gc00, thank you for your reply and interest. I’ll prepare the draft PR for review over the next few days and let you know once it is ready. |
|
Hi @alan-lira. We are cleaning up PRs before some bigger changes. What's the progress of these draft PRs? |

Document the bundled-tree scope of apply.sh.
When DMTCP_ROOT is set, Makefile builds that directory, but apply.sh always patches $mana_root/dmtcp. The helper can therefore report success while the build uses an unpatched DMTCP tree. Keep the helper bundled-tree-only, but state this limitation in the README.
Suggested documentation
From a configured MANA source directory, run:
```bash
bash contrib/dmtcp-patches/apply.sh
make -j"$(nproc)" mana+This helper patches only the bundled dmtcp tree. It does not follow
+DMTCP_ROOT; apply the patch separately to an overridden DMTCP tree.
+
The helper checks whether the patch is already applied, so it can be run more than once.
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Validate the patch before changing the working tree.
If an unrelated DMTCP edit has a whitespace error, git diff --check exits unsuccessfully after Line 13 applies the patch. The helper then reports failure despite leaving the patch installed. Check the patch’s whitespace during the preflight step instead of checking the entire working-tree diff afterward. Git supports git apply --whitespace=error --check for this purpose. (git-scm.com)
I apologize for the delay in following up. I have been retesting the changes against MANA v1.5.0 and updating the PRs based on those results and your feedback. The Thank you! |
|
Hi @alan-lira, for this PR, let's add the PMI_FD to the if condition, instead of including it as a patch file. later we can work on the DMTCP side for a better solution to protect fds that are created by plugins or created before DMTCP is initialized. |
Thank you, @xuyao00. I've added The source change is in de1b0e5, based on MANA's pinned DMTCP revision. For review, the sub-module temporarily points to my public fork so the commit can be fetched normally. Please let me know if this is ready for review or if any further changes are needed. |
|
@alan-lira Sorry, I didn't notice this change is in DMTCP. Could you create a PR for DMTCP and close this one? The PR should target the main branch. Then I will approve and merge immediately. MANA uses the 4.2-dev branch for now because the main branch is preparing for the v5.0 release and has some breaking API changes. I will cherry-pick your commit to the 4.2-dev branch after it's merged into main. Later I will update the submodule in MANA. There are some other PRs needs a submodule update. |
Thank you, @xuyao00. I've opened dmtcp/dmtcp#1310 against DMTCP's |
|
@alan-lira I have merged your DMTCP PR to main and 4.2-dev branches. MANA's submodule upgrade still need to wait for a while. You can upgrade the submodule locally to use the latest 4.2-dev. |
Refs #485
Background
My distributed MPICH/Hydra checkpoint/restart tests with MANA v1.5.0 require adding
PMI_FDto the existing early-return condition in DMTCP’sSocketConnList::scanForPreExisting().The reference stack used for those tests was:
c5aeb26f77c29de7ceb6b20889246564c19a774d;97ab11e406977a2564f8da59c9d8a3e36bd5f505;What changes
Following the review, this revision replaces the separate patch file and application helper with a direct source correction.
The DMTCP submodule now references commit
de1b0e5, based directly on the previously bundled revision. Its only source change is:This skips the pre-existing socket scan for processes with
PMI_FDset. It does not selectively exclude only the descriptor identified by that variable.The previous files under
contrib/dmtcp-patches/have been removed. No manual patch application is required when building this revision.Validation
The following checks passed:
src/plugin/ipc/socket/socketconnlist.cpp, with two insertions and one deletion;Integration for review
The submodule URL temporarily points to my public DMTCP fork so reviewers and CI can retrieve the source commit through a normal checkout.
Once the small correction is available in the official DMTCP repository, the official submodule URL can be restored and the commit reference adjusted if necessary.
As discussed in the review, the broader solution for protecting descriptors created by plugins or before DMTCP initialization remains separate work.
