Refs #485

Summary

This PR adds a small opt-in MPICH/Hydra multi-node checkpoint/restart test.

Test workflow

  1. Check remote paths and matching MANA binaries.
  2. Run native MPI on at least two hosts.
  3. Start DMTCP's coordinator directly and run a finite MANA smoke test.
  4. Launch the longer MPI counter and wait for progress from every rank.
  5. Request a blocking checkpoint and wait for complete images and headers.
  6. Terminate and restart the same rank layout.
  7. Verify each rank's rollback, continued progress, and MPI_Allreduce results.

The runner checks .temp files, image/header completeness, stable checkpoint metadata, and tagged image writers. It lets the application advance after checkpointing so rollback is observable.

The MPI counter also checks its expected communicator size, so an incompatible MPI library/launcher pairing fails explicitly.

Configuration and cleanup

Without MANA_TEST_HOSTFILE, the runner prints SKIP and exits successfully.
The normal CI environment does not need multiple SSH-accessible nodes.

Each run gets a unique work directory and private HOME/.mana.rc.
Cleanup targets its owned coordinator and processes carrying the exact run tag.
The evidence directory is retained for inspection.

Validation

The following local checks passed while preparing this revision:

  • shell syntax validation;
  • successful SKIP behavior when no hostfile is configured;
  • 15 checks covering log validation, checkpoint inventories, missing ranks, collective results, and rollback detection.

Scope

This PR changes test sources and documentation, plus the Git-ignore exception for the new test directory.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an optional multi-node checkpoint-and-restart test for MPICH/Hydra, checking that distributed workloads resume and continue making progress after restart.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on prerequisites, configuration, running the test, interpreting results, and locating logs. The test skips successfully when no hostfile is configured.

📝 Walkthrough

Adds an optional multi-node MPICH/Hydra test. The test runs an MPI counter workload, requests a DMTCP checkpoint, and verifies rank progress and collective results after restart.

Changes: Multi-node test

Adds the MPI counter workload and documentation. The runner validates its inputs and creates a workspace for test artifacts.
Remote execution and coordinator management
mpi-proxy-split/test/multinode/run-mpich-hydra.sh
Adds remote prerequisites and file distribution, coordinator management, tagged-process cleanup, and native and finite MANA smoke tests.
Checkpoint and restart verification

The opt-in test can waste a run’s timeout on an incompatible host or an early MPI launch failure. These are bounded test-workflow issues; the changes are mergeable with owner awareness, though earlier failure detection would improve them.

Dear @xuyao00, I've made a few revisions to this PR...
It provides a simple, opt-in test for MPICH/Hydra checkpoint and restart across multiple nodes, checking that every rank resumes from the checkpoint and continues producing correct collective results.

I wonder if this is useful to keep in MANA's test suite... or would you prefer that I close the PR?

Check Python 3.9 or later before remote inventory.

The README requires Python 3.9 or later, but the remote preflight checks only whether python3 exists. directory.name is a str, and directory.name.removeprefix("ckpt_rank_") raises AttributeError on Python versions before 3.9. checkpoint_inventory then fails, and step 5 retries until TIMEOUT_SECONDS before exiting. The exit handler retains log tails and the evidence directory, but it does not identify the Python-version mismatch.

Add the version check on each remote host and on the controller before mkdir -p "$WORK_ROOT" to enforce the documented prerequisite.

Fail fast when a background mpiexec exits before progress.

If either background mpiexec exits before the required progress appears, wait_progress continues polling until TIMEOUT_SECONDS. The parent shell does not propagate the asynchronous command's failure. Save both background PIDs and pass them to wait_progress. Check progress first so a completed progress check still succeeds after a clean process exit.

Hi @alan-lira, thanks for the additional tests and documents. I think we don't need them in MANA right now. Hydra can be setup in different ways. For example, in our environment, Hydra uses HYDI_CONTROL_FD instead of PMI_FD. Adding these tests can't cover all cases. And they should not be in the regression test. For the documents, we are preparing some cleanup of the building scripts (configure and Makefiles). So we will provide new documents after the cleanup. And the new document will have better coverage of different environment. Therefore, I think you can close these PRs.

But we still want to thank you for the feedback. We will use them as references for our future updates.
