JsonSchemaTestSuiteTests runs the OpenAPI validator against the official JSON Schema Test Suite. It now uses draft 2020-12, the JSON Schema dialect of OpenAPI 3.1, instead of draft 6, and reports its results per keyword.

Changes

  • Enabling: @Disabled is replaced by @EnabledIfSystemProperty. The test runs when -DjsonSchemaTestSuite.dir=<path to the suite> is set; -DjsonSchemaTestSuite.draft selects another draft (default draft2020-12). CI is not affected.
  • Robustness: an exception (parser or validator) no longer aborts the whole run. It is counted as an error for the affected test runs.
  • Reporting:
    • The log shows a summary per keyword: passed, failed, errors, ignored and pass rate.
    • A Markdown report with every failure (data, expected result, actual validation message or exception) is written to core/target/json-schema-test-suite/<draft>.md.
  • Test fixes:
    • The generated OpenAPI now has the required info object.
    • "$ref": "#" now points to the schema; before, it pointed to the root of the OpenAPI document.

How to run

git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/json-schema-org/JSON-Schema-Test-Suite.git <suite>
JAVA_TOOL_OPTIONS="-DjsonSchemaTestSuite.dir=<suite>" test/scripts/run-core-test.sh com.predic8.membrane.core.openapi.validators.JsonSchemaTestSuiteTests

run-core-test.sh does not forward -D properties to the test JVM, so the property is passed through JAVA_TOOL_OPTIONS. The final assertion fails as long as cases fail; the report is written before it.

Current result (draft2020-12, suite as of 2026-10-21)

Run on master as of 2026-10-26, which includes #3473 (unevaluatedProperties): 1027 passed, 205 failed, 18 errors, 52 ignored. That is 82 % of the executed test runs.

The main groups of failures:

  • Keywords that are not validated: unevaluatedItems, contains/minContains/maxContains, if/then/else, dependentSchemas, dependentRequired, propertyNames and prefixItems. const and enum are only checked for strings.
  • $dynamicRef, $anchor, $id and URN references are not supported.
  • Boolean schemas (true/false) as a top-level schema or subschema.
  • format and contentMediaType/contentSchema are asserted, while 2020-12 treats them as annotations by default.
  • Smaller deviations: limits written as decimals (maxItems: 2.0) are ignored, 1.0 is not accepted as an integer, string length is counted in UTF-16 units, and the \p{Letter} regex is not supported.

44 test runs are ignored because they need remote references served on localhost:1234, most of them in refRemote. A group is only ignored if a $ref points to such a resource that the schema does not embed with an $id.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • JSON Schema test suites can run when a suite directory is configured, with selectable draft versions and draft2020-12 as the default.
    • Test results distinguish passed, failed, errored, and ignored cases, with a Markdown summary of each run.
    • Runs now report validation and execution errors, and fail when no tests execute or any test fails or errors.
    • Schema generation handles references and definitions more reliably, including name collisions and root references.

…word report

JsonSchemaTestSuiteTests now runs the draft2020-12 tests, the JSON Schema
dialect of OpenAPI 3.1, instead of draft6.

- Enabled with -DjsonSchemaTestSuite.dir=<path to the suite> instead of
  @disabled; -DjsonSchemaTestSuite.draft selects another draft.
- An exception no longer aborts the run; it is counted as an error for
  the affected test runs.
- Logs a summary per keyword (passed, failed, errors, ignored, pass rate)
and writes a Markdown report with every failure to
  target/json-schema-test-suite/<draft>.md.
- The generated OpenAPI has the required info object, and "$ref": "#"
points to the schema instead of the root of the OpenAPI document.

Walkthrough

The JSON Schema test harness runs tests for a selected draft when configured with a test directory. It converts schemas for OpenAPI validation, records run outcomes, and writes a Markdown report.

Changes: JSON Schema test suite

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure and load test runs
core/src/test/java/com/predic8/membrane/core/openapi/validators/JsonSchemaTestSuiteTests.java
The test runs only when jsonSchemaTestSuite.dir is set. It reads sorted JSON test files for the configured draft, which defaults to draft2020-12, and prepares per-file results.
Convert schemas and evaluate runs
core/src/test/java/com/predic8/membrane/core/openapi/validators/JsonSchemaTestSuiteTests.java
Schema conversion moves definitions and $defs into component schemas and handles root $ref references. The runner detects remote references that lack a matching embedded resource ID and records passed, failed, ignored, or error outcomes.
Summarize and write results
core/src/test/java/com/predic8/membrane/core/openapi/validators/JsonSchemaTestSuiteTests.java
The runner writes a Markdown report with overall and per-file pass rates, failures, errors, and ignored runs. Report details are shortened when they exceed 300 characters.

The runner can report errors instead of validation results for schemas with nested resource definitions. This is a bounded test-harness issue to fix or explicitly accept before merging.

Preserve literal values in enum and const data, including objects that happen to
contain a $ref key.
- Line 154: Update moveTypeDefinitions so migrating definitions and $defs
preserves their separate reference namespaces, even when both contain the same
name; ensure rewritten references continue to resolve to their respective
schemas instead of allowing one map to overwrite the other.

@rrayst Coderabbit comments are not resolved

…ly real remote refs

- Rewrite references on the schema tree instead of the YAML text, so only
$ref values in schema positions change. Literal values of enum, const,
default and examples stay as they are, even if they look like a
  reference.
- Keep definitions and $defs apart: if both declare the same name, the
component names of definitions get the prefix "definitions_".
- Ignore a test group only if a $ref, resolved against the $id in scope,
points to a resource on localhost:1234 that the schema does not embed.
Groups like "Recursive references between schemas" now run.
- Fail if no test run was executed, e.g. for a draft directory without
tests, instead of passing with an empty report.
