Feature Description

Hi, Forgejo added some variables to the default css theming that aren't in Gitea. I'm not sure how many are different but specifically two selection variables are causing issues because you can't see selected text anymore. Would you be willing to add these to the themes please. I know this is for Gitea and not Forgejo but having these would fix the issue. I would really appreciate it!

As mentioned in the pinned issue, I don’t plan to maintain Forgejo support, so I won’t be adding these variables. I usually verify how every variable looks in the actual UI, and I'm maintaining multiple color theme variants right now. What values would those two variables take in the other themes? Each theme has its own logic and can't simply reuse values. I also don’t have a Forgejo instance to test the colors, so this isn't just about adding two variables — it’s a bit more involved than it might seem.

My project follows Gitea’s theming closely. If Gitea removes certain variables, I’ll remove them too. In a way, I’m also maintaining a TypeScript SDK for Gitea’s theme system alongside this.

I also think Forgejo’s styling issues likely go beyond just these two variables.

If you really enjoy this project, you might consider migrating to Gitea. From what I’ve seen, there have been some misleading narratives about Gitea coming from Forgejo, while Forgejo actually cherry-picks a lot of Gitea’s development, and its iteration pace is noticeably slower. Of course, you’re free to choose whichever product you like, but if possible, I’d gently suggest giving Gitea a try.

Lastly, if all you need is to add two color variables, you don’t have to change the project itself. You can simply use custom CSS variables as described in the README. (Even if they’re not variables set by this theme, CSS’s cascading mechanism will handle the overrides correctly.)
