These sweeping changes are going to be done in PRs from now on to avoid getting nightly stuck (and hence all development)

Additionally this is my first shot at doing heavy agent harness based work, this was done in isolated phases with several parallelized subagent tasks with adversarial review agents.

Most of the improvements went to just deduplicating work I duplicated in miscellaneous asset or CI/CD files..

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Dependency manifests now support a consistent package alias across dependency types, plus rockspec paths for supported sources.
    • Download progress is now available through a shared progress display.
  • Bug Fixes
    • LuaRocks version and rockspec selection now handles version constraints and available source files more reliably.
    • Install receipts and lockfile updates now reflect current manifest and dependency resolution data.
    • Platform-specific LuaRocks install commands are now honored, and native modules are discovered more consistently.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the manifest reference to describe dependency aliases and rockspec paths.

Unit 1 (findings 007, 010): util.ldeHome is the single LDE_HOME/~/.lde
rule; ansi.downloadProgress replaces six copied curl callbacks; delete
lde-registry's unreachable defaultDir.
Unit 2 (finding 009): util.getManifestPath/getUrlCachePath/getResolutionStamp
are the single owner of the receipt inputs; lde install no longer joins
private cache filenames, and receipts embed the accessor stamp.
Unit 3 (findings 008, 063-067): one mergedWithLockfile helper; shared
featureList/optionalFlag/packageAlias/rockspecPath schema definitions used
by all five branches, with the missing registry.rockspec and
luarocks.package keys; the published `package` alias is normalized to the
runtime `name` on load, with fixtures.
Unit 4 (findings 011, 012, 015, 016, 017): ansi.now replaces the local ffi
clock; corpus/policy and codegen move to packages.lua/smoke.lua; results
carry one status used by summary and CSV; lde.json/lde.lock are parsed with
the pinned json module; dead funcErr and the unused warm result are gone.
Unit 5 (findings 019-022, 024): runner.runCase owns timing/classification;
runner.evaluate folds timeout and spawn failures into one finding rule;
rng.value materializes thunk shapes; the fuzzer deadline uses ansi.now;
fixtures live on ctx and --lua cases run where scripts/ resolves.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request reorganizes cross-platform builds around reusable workflows and adds Android container support. It also updates package resolution and execution utilities, crater smoke checks, fuzzing, benchmark configuration, and documentation-site helpers.

Changes: Build and release pipeline

Layer / File(s) Summary
Android build environment
.devcontainer/*, .github/actions/android-env/action.yml, docker/termux.Dockerfile
The devcontainer uses the nightly LDE image. A composite action caches and runs commands in a Termux Android container, with optional binary copying and release environment configuration.
Reusable cross-platform builds
.github/workflows/_build.yml, .github/workflows/{bootstrap,build,test}.yml
A reusable workflow defines platform builds, bootstrap options, optional tests, and publication. The bootstrap, build, and test workflows call it.
Docker downloads and rockspec publication
.github/workflows/{docker,nightly,release}.yml, docker/*, luarocks/*
Dockerfiles use a shared binary download script. Nightly and release workflows call reusable workflows and generate rockspecs from a shared template.

Package contracts and resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Manifest contracts and normalization
schemas/lde.schema.json, packages/lde-core/src/package/init.lua, packages/lde-core/tests/package.test.lua, docs/src/content/docs/general/misc/manifest-reference.md
The schema defines shared dependency properties and rockspec paths. Runtime decoding normalizes package to name, and dependency getters share lockfile overlay logic. Tests and documentation cover alias normalization.
LuaRocks and platform resolution
packages/luarocks/*, packages/lde-core/src/package/rockspec/init.lua, packages/lde-core/src/package/update.lua, packages/lde/src/commands/outdated.lua, packages/lde-registry/src/init.lua, packages/lde-core/tests/build.test.lua
LuaRocks matching selects versions with applicable entries and shared URL helpers. Dependency lookups use configured names. Rockspec parsing applies platform commands, and Registry.new requires a dirFn.
Install resolution and receipts
packages/lde-core/src/package/install/*, packages/lde/src/commands/{add,install,remove}.lua, packages/lde-core/src/util/init.lua
Install handlers share content materialization and dependency expansion. Receipts record requested versions and resolution stamps. Add and remove hash reloaded configuration.

Package execution and shared runtime utilities

Layer / File(s) Summary
Native library discovery
packages/lde-core/src/package/{nativeext,bloat,bundle,compile}.lua
A shared scanner selects platform extensions, traverses package modules, and applies feature exclusions. Package size reporting, compilation, and bundling use the scanner.
Input stamps and child scheduling
packages/lde-core/src/util/{stamp,childpool}.lua, packages/lde-core/src/package/{build,test}.lua, packages/lde/src/commands/test.lua
A shared stamp utility reads stamp files and detects input changes. Package builds and tests use it. A child pool handles worker scheduling, result files, spawn errors, and callbacks.
Home and download utilities
packages/ansi/src/*, packages/lde-core/src/global/*, packages/lde-core/src/util/{download,init}.lua, packages/util/src/init.lua, packages/sea/src/target.lua
Download call sites use a shared progress callback. util.ldeHome() centralizes home-directory resolution, and download timeouts use the shared constant.

Crater smoke checks

Layer / File(s) Summary
Package catalog and smoke script
crater/src/{packages,smoke}.lua, crater/lde.json
The package catalog defines package metadata, exclusions, expected failures, and exercises. Smoke helpers create projects, discover modules, and generate test scripts.
Smoke results and reporting
crater/src/init.lua
Crater parses lockfile JSON and records package results with normalized statuses. Summary counts, CSV values, and the exit condition derive from those statuses.

Fuzzer execution and contexts

Layer / File(s) Summary
Scratch paths and generated values
fuzzer/src/{init,cli,packages,rng}.lua
The shared context defines dependency and script paths. Fuzzer cases use these paths, and rng.value selects and evaluates generated entries.
Case execution and classification
fuzzer/src/{runner,init,cli,packages}.lua
The runner measures cases, enforces deadlines, evaluates findings, and exports runCase, evaluate, and OUTCOMES. The CLI and package fuzzers use those exports.

Documentation site

Layer / File(s) Summary
Registry and browser cache
docs/src/lib/cache.ts, docs/src/hooks/{usePortfile,useRegistry}.ts, docs/src/components/Registry.tsx
Shared cache helpers handle timestamped local-storage entries. The hooks use these helpers, and the registry component gets package data and state from useRegistry.
Package and download components
docs/src/components/{DownloadPanel,PackageDetail}.tsx, README.md
PackageDetail uses its name prop for lookup and display. DownloadPanel uses the shared copy button. The README logo path changes.
Callouts and content ordering
docs/src/lib/{admonitions,githubAdmonitions,readmeMarked,contentOrder}.ts, docs/src/pages/*
A shared helper parses callout markers. Shared ordering helpers sort documentation and blog entries and are used by site pages.

Benchmark configuration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Timing and configured benchmark cases
benchmarks/src/init.lua
Benchmark timing uses ansi.now(). Tool definitions and case settings drive command construction and benchmark execution.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 5 (Critical) | ~90 minutes

Change: Refactor

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 25350

The three previously identified regressions are corrected at the reviewed head. No confirmed merge-blocking issue remains after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 25350

The refactor has cross-cutting effects. A concurrent dependency edit can leave an apparently current lockfile retaining an older source, undermining the intended dependency change. Existing protections constrain ordinary failures, and the reviewed build changes reduce credential exposure.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Remove can certify old dependency pins against a concurrently changed manifest. After remove writes its manifest snapshot, another writer can change an unrelated dependency source before reloadConfig runs. Remove then hashes the newer manifest while preserving that dependency’s old lock entry. Subsequent installation can accept the matching hash and retain the old source. The base hashed the snapshot it wrote, so this particular post-write edit would instead produce a mismatch. The broader lack of transactionality predates this PR; the additional reread window is the regression.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified consistency risk affects dependency resolution for the project whose manifest and lockfile are being mutated, including subsequent consumers of that resulting lockfile. The shared build contract separately has distribution-wide reach across its platform assets, but the inspected callers do not introduce a new unauthenticated invocation path.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A concurrent editor or command with manifest-write access can change dependency B after dependency A is removed but before the canonical reload. The resulting hash can authorize B’s previous lock entry, so replacing an unwanted source may not take effect. This requires a specific local write schedule; it is not evidence of privilege escalation. Explicit-commit precedence constrains some cases, but does not generally validate a changed source URL.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — For direct Git dependencies, the normalized source name changes package selection within the fetched repository. Git planning still receives the dependency alias, and findNamedPackage selects opened manifests by name equality rather than joining the supplied package name into a path. This counters a direct filesystem-path expansion interpretation of that specific change.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The installed fast path checks current manifest and lockfile content and verifies dependency materialization; locked installs bypass that fast path and reject stale manifests or missing non-path pins. These provide recovery and containment for several partial-update states, but a falsely matching manifest hash defeats the stale-hash distinction.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bind lockfile certification to the canonical form of the exact manifest snapshot being committed, with shared writer locking or version checks that reject intervening edits. Preserve canonical alias handling without treating an independent reread as proof that retained pins belong to that version. Validate the transition with a scheduled concurrent-edit case and interrupted-write recovery cases.

Unit 6 (findings 043-047, 049, 056, 058, 061): _build.yml owns the target
matrix and build paths for all five callers; Android env is one composite
action over docker/termux.Dockerfile; docker.yml is callable; the two
rockspec templates and install.lua collapse into one template with a
windows install command; lde's engine merges platform build commands.
Unit 7 (findings 051, 052, 055): docker/fetch-lde.sh owns the arch/asset
map used by both downloaders; alpine uses ARG BASE like glibc; the glibc
final stage declares libgcc-s1 explicitly.
Unit 8 (findings 079-081, 083): the broken hand-rolled download and third
image definition are gone; devcontainer.json uses
ghcr.io/lde-org/lde:nightly-debian and runs lde --setup at create time.
Unit 9 (findings 001, 002): expand/queueContent closures replace the four
expansion and two queue sites; one materializeContent handles clone, git,
archive, and src plans.
Unit 10 (findings 003, 004): lde-core.util.childpool owns the start/reap/poll
driver for test files and packages; lde-core.util.stamp owns the size/mtime/
hash envelope used by build and test.
Unit 11 (finding 006): nativeext.extsFor/scan own the platform suffixes and
module/cpath naming; the three consumers stop duplicating the walk.
Unit 12 (finding 005): matching/urlsFor own sorting, constraint parsing, and
URL formatting; getBest, listBest, and getRockspecUrl consume them.
Unit 13 (findings 026, 027, 033): lib/cache owns the localStorage TTL
envelope; Registry uses useRegistry/sortByDate; PackageDetail's _fallback
sentinel is gone.
Unit 14 (finding 029): delete the local copy button and icons.
Unit 15 (finding 031): parseCalloutMarker in lib/admonitions is shared by
the mdast and marked adapters, which keep only AST mutations.
Unit 16 (finding 032): docsInSidebarOrder/blogNewestFirst feed llms, rss,
the home page, and the blog index.
Unit 17 (findings 036, 037): ansi.now replaces the local clock; TOOLS/CASES
and one argv builder preserve every tool invocation, including lx warm
--no-prompt.
Unit 18 (finding 069): #/definitions/percent is referenced by the root,
package, and file reports.
Unit 19 (findings 071, 072, 074-076, 078): remove invisible clipped
polygons and the unused clip, drop the hidden wordmark, delete the four
assets/dist duplicates and point README at docs/public, and collapse the
duplicate text styles.

In the shard construction around decoded.files, read decoded.files[1] once into
a local using Lua’s and-chain nil check, then use and-chains to access its
results and error fields; preserve decoded.error as the fallback when the first
file has no error.

33-33: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Rename the module table M to follow the naming rule.

The style guide bans single-letter names except loop indexes and _. It lists Package and lockfile as module table forms. Use childPool or ChildPool, and update the return on Line 95.

♻️ Proposed rename
-const M = {}

Also rename M.sleep, M.run, and return M to match.

The Luacheck E011 on Line 3 comes from the const keyword. The code uses LuaJIT 3.0 syntax, which Luacheck cannot parse. Treat it as a false positive.

Remove the -- ── Section ── marker comments.

The style guide forbids section-marker comments inside a file. The file is pure data, so the rank prefixes (bN, cN) already show the groups. Delete these three comments. Keep any information that matters in a short, normal comment.

The header block at Lines 20-29 repeats three entries of EXCLUDE_MODULES. That table now has 16 entries, so the header is already incomplete and will go stale. The EXCLUDE_PREFIXES comment at Lines 207-210 says json.lua ships bench/ scripts. json.lua is listed in EXPECTED_FAIL and is never installed. Remove the repeated lists and correct that comment.

As per coding guidelines: "Markers like -- ==== Section ==== inside a file. Split the file instead." and "Comments that can go stale."

Forward LDE_RELEASE into the Alpine container and use the release compile path.

Line 91 sets LDE_RELEASE=1 when publish == 'release'. The docker run command forwards only OUTFILE, RUN_TESTS, and BOOTSTRAP. The container therefore does not see LDE_RELEASE. The non-bootstrap branch also always runs lde -C packages/lde run -- compile. The glibc path (Line 170-171) and the FreeBSD path (Line 229-232) both switch to lde -C packages/lde compile in release mode.

packages/lde/build.lua:11 reads os.getenv("LDE_RELEASE"). If the value is set, the build uses the base version. If it is empty, the build uses a nightly hash or a development version. As a result, the lde-linux-x86-64-musl and lde-linux-aarch64-musl release assets carry a non-release version string. Any Docker image built from those musl binaries inherits the wrong version. The FreeBSD step exports LDE_RELEASE=1 inside the VM explicitly, so only the musl rows have this gap.

Normalize Windows separators in nested native-file keys.

On Windows, a file such as cmod\sub\core.dll leaves backslashes in file.cpath. bundlePackage inserts that key into a generated Lua string without escaping it. An escape such as \c can prevent the source bundle from loading. Replace path separators with / before returning the key. Lua treats backslashes in quoted strings as escape prefixes. (lua.org)
