Problem

A validator could join consensus with the wrong genesis or fork schedule:

  • On a fresh database, block 0 was written from data/genesis.json before EXPECTED_GENESIS_HASH was compared, and only against peers.
  • On a restart the stored block 0 was never checked against the pin.
  • A fork schedule edited between restarts was loaded silently, even at heights the chain had passed.
  • An unknown scheduled fork was ignored, and the snapshot that replaces the genesis validator set was not covered by any hash.
  • A refusal at boot exited 0.

Design: docs/design/genesis-enforcement.md.

Change

  • Pinned mode. EXPECTED_GENESIS_HASH is the genesis data hash, the value getGenesisDataHash already reports. It is normalised (trim, 0x, case), and a malformed value stops the boot.
    • NODE_ENV=production requires a pin, unless DEMOS_ALLOW_UNPINNED_GENESIS=true. The devnet overlay sets the opt-out.
  • Fresh database. Before anything is written, the node checks:
    • the file hash equals the pin;
    • RESTORE is off;
    • the genesis has a timestamp;
    • the snapshot matches the new genesis field snapshot.manifestSha256, and an undeclared snapshot is refused.
  • Restart. Block 0 must hash to the pin, the file must match block 0 except for the fork schedule, and the chain id may not change.
  • Fork schedule. The accepted schedule is stored in accepted_fork_schedule (new migration).
    • On restart a change is allowed only when both the old and the new height are unscheduled or above tip + 50.
    • DEMOS_ACCEPT_FORK_SCHEDULE_DIGEST=<digest> accepts one exact schedule inside the window.
    • An unknown fork with a height stops the boot.
  • Exit code. A boot refusal exits 1.
  • Hello gate. It reports other-genesis.
  • launch-go-no-go. It probes each validator's genesis data hash, schedule digest and active forks, and returns NO-GO on any mismatch.
  • scripts/genesis-hash.ts. It prints the values a network publishes: the pin, the schedule digest and the snapshot manifest hash.
  • Operator docs. INSTALL.md (pin step), .env.example, and compose pass-through of the new variables.

Evidence

  • testing/genesis-acceptance/run.sh --image <ref> runs an image as shipped (its own entrypoint and user) through 10 scenarios.

    Image Scenarios passed Notes
    v1.0.0-rc.3 2/10 Boots with a wrong genesis, no pin, a bad pin, a changed snapshot, a changed pin on restart, a moved fork and an unknown fork.
    This branch 10/10
  • scripts/test-consensus.sh: 72 files, 0 failed.

Operator impact

Testnet installs on an image with this change must set either EXPECTED_GENESIS_HASH or DEMOS_ALLOW_UNPINNED_GENESIS=true.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Nodes verify configured genesis and snapshot hashes at startup and refuse to launch when checks fail. Production deployments require a pinned genesis unless explicitly configured otherwise.
    • Fork-schedule changes near the current chain height are rejected unless operators accept the reported schedule digest.
    • Peers on a different genesis are identified and disconnected. Launch checks now validate genesis data, fork schedules, and required active forks.
    • Added a command-line tool to inspect genesis and snapshot data and report validation results.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Startup errors now exit with a failure code. Unknown forks with a scheduled activation height are rejected.
  • Documentation

    • Added deployment guidance for genesis pinning, snapshot files, fork-schedule acceptance, and launch checks.

…ule at boot

A node checked its genesis only against peers, after block 0 was already
written, and never compared a restart's genesis or fork schedule with what
it ran before.

- EXPECTED_GENESIS_HASH is normalized and validated; NODE_ENV=production
  refuses to start without it unless DEMOS_ALLOW_UNPINNED_GENESIS=true.
- Empty database: the file must hash to the pin, RESTORE is refused, a
  timestamp is required, and the snapshot is bound through
  snapshot.manifestSha256, all before block 0 is written.
- Existing database: stored block 0 must hash to the pin, the file may
  differ from it only in the fork schedule, and the chain id may not change.
- The accepted fork schedule is stored; a restart that changes a fork at or
  below tip + 50 is refused unless DEMOS_ACCEPT_FORK_SCHEDULE_DIGEST names
  that exact schedule. A scheduled fork the build does not know is fatal.
- A fatal boot error exits 1.
- Hello to a peer on another chain reports that, not an identity failure.
- Go/no-go probes each validator's genesis data hash, schedule digest and
  active mainnet forks; scripts/genesis-hash.ts prints the values to publish.
- Compose passes the new variables; INSTALL.md documents pinning and the
  read-only mainnet genesis mount.
- Peer bootstrap compares the normalized pin, so a 0x-prefixed or padded
  EXPECTED_GENESIS_HASH no longer fails after block 0 is written.
- A chain id change is refused only while signatureDomain is at or below
  tip + 50 in either version; a chain that started without one can add it
  together with the fork.
- A freshly created block 0 overwrites any accepted-schedule row left in a
  partly wiped database.
- The devnet compose overlay opts out of the production pin requirement.
- The fork rehearsal uses a 60-block lead and gives node 4 the override for
  its stripped schedule.
- testing/genesis-acceptance/run.sh runs ten boot and restart scenarios
  against a node image as published.

Walkthrough

The change adds startup checks for genesis data, snapshots, and fork schedules. It persists accepted schedules, updates peer and launch validation, and adds deployment guidance, command-line tooling, and acceptance tests.

Changes

Genesis and Fork-Schedule Enforcement

Layer / File(s) Summary
Genesis and schedule validation
src/libs/blockchain/genesis/genesisPin.ts, src/libs/blockchain/genesis/loadSnapshot.ts, src/libs/blockchain/genesis/acceptedForkSchedule.ts, src/forks/loadForkConfig.ts, testing/genesis/*, testing/forks/loadForkConfig.test.ts
Genesis pins and snapshot manifests are parsed and validated. Fork schedules are normalized and compared against the tip-plus-lead window. Unknown forks with an activation height are rejected; tests cover these checks.
Boot checks and accepted-schedule persistence
src/libs/blockchain/routines/findGenesisBlock.ts, src/libs/blockchain/genesis/acceptedForkScheduleStore.ts, src/migrations/1793318400000-CreateAcceptedForkSchedule.ts, src/index.ts
Startup checks fresh and existing databases before continuing. The node stores and reconciles accepted fork schedules. Main errors now pass exit code 1 to graceful shutdown.
Launch checks, CLI, and peer mismatch reporting
scripts/launch-go-no-go.ts, scripts/launch-go-no-go.test.ts, scripts/genesis-hash.ts, src/libs/peer/PeerManager.ts, src/libs/peer/routines/peerBootstrap.ts
The launch checker compares validator genesis hashes and schedule digests and checks required active forks. Peer bootstrap parses the configured pin and handles genesis mismatches as a distinct verdict. A CLI reports genesis and schedule values with validation problems.
Rehearsal and release-image acceptance
testing/forks/rehearsal.*, testing/genesis-acceptance/*, scripts/test-consensus.sh
Fork rehearsals use a 60-block lead default and test schedule-digest acceptance. The release-image harness creates fixtures and runs fresh-database and restart scenarios. The consensus test script includes the added fork and genesis tests.
Deployment settings and enforcement documentation
.env.example, INSTALL.md, docker-compose*.yml, docs/design/genesis-enforcement.md, docs/runbooks/launch-go-no-go.md
Environment examples and Compose settings expose the pin, unpinned-genesis exception, snapshot directory, and schedule-digest override. Installation and design documentation describe the checks and deployment settings. The launch runbook describes the added validator checks.

Possibly related PRs

  • kynesyslabs/node#1095: Both changes update launch validation to check validator genesis and fork requirements.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 65dbe

Resolve the startup and schedule-enforcement issues before merging. Some documented deployment paths cannot start as written, and an interrupted first boot can leave schedule changes unchecked.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 65dbe

The startup controls are substantially stronger, but interrupted initialization can leave block 0 committed without its accepted fork schedule. Recovery can then accept changed consensus rules without the intended approval. This requires an interrupted boot and a local configuration change; a remote-only attack was not established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new accepted-schedule authority is not crash-consistent with genesis creation. Block 0 commits before the separate schedule upsert. Interruption or failure between them leaves a post-change database without a schedule row; recovery treats that state as legacy initialization and accepts the loaded schedule without applying the height window or requiring the exact override digest. A schedule-only file edit can therefore pass the stored-genesis pin check and become the new baseline. This is a durability gap in the added security control, not evidence of increased remote reachability.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The direct enforcement scope is one node's genesis, accepted schedule, and database. Incorrect acceptance can change that validator's consensus behavior and state interpretation. The inspected paths do not establish a network-wide compromise or a new cross-tenant, credential, or infrastructure authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — In the interrupted-initialization case, an actor able to edit the genesis file can change only a known fork schedule while preserving the pin and chain ID. The stored genesis still passes identity validation, and the missing-row branch accepts the edited schedule without the intended approval. No ability for an unauthenticated remote peer alone to create this sequence was established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The production launch path derives expectations locally and rejects reported genesis-data, schedule, or required-fork mismatches. Identity proof remains separate from state responses: its signature covers the nonce and URL, not execution state. This retains the existing self-report trust model and is not classified as a new authority expansion.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The unchanged runtime schedule watch is a partial containment control, not a replacement for durable boot acceptance. It begins abstention only when a strict majority of responding validators differs and a future fork is within the window. A historical-only schedule mismatch need not trigger that abstention.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make genesis creation and initial schedule authority recover as one logical transition, using atomic persistence or an explicit recoverable initialization state. Distinguish legacy adoption from interrupted new initialization so absence of the accepted row cannot silently authorize changed consensus rules.

Summary

The PR checks the pinned genesis and accepted fork schedule before the node joins consensus.

  • Nodes check the pinned genesis and snapshot before joining consensus.
  • Nodes compare a changed fork schedule with the last one they accepted.
  • Launch checks compare each validator with the announced genesis and fork rules.
  • Peer checks identify a different genesis separately from an invalid identity.
  • Operators can print the genesis values a network publishes.

generateGenesisBlock takes the host clock for any falsy timestamp, so a
pinned genesis with timestamp 0 still gave every node its own block 0.
The go/no-go check counted a launch validator on another genesis block as
merely offline; it is now NO-GO like other genesis data or schedule.

Isolate the devnet pin from the shared environment.

The base Compose file still passes EXPECTED_GENESIS_HASH from the shared .env. The opt-out only permits an empty pin; it does not disable a configured pin. A devnet with its own genesis therefore fails the hash check when the main stack is pinned. Override the devnet pin separately, for example with a devnet-specific variable that defaults to empty. Qualify the database-write guarantee.

Startup initializes the data source with migrationsRun: true before findGenesisBlock. On an upgrade, the accepted-schedule migration can therefore change the database even when the genesis check later refuses boot. Replace the no-write guarantee here and in INSTALL.md with the narrower block-0 guarantee. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

a fork that is already active, stops the boot. The chain id enters consensus
only through `signatureDomain`, so it may change (a chain that started
without one adds it together with that fork) only while `signatureDomain`

Clarify which chain ID changes can boot.

The schedule check permits an ID change beyond the window, but restartGenesisProblems first rejects any change where both block 0 and the file have different defined IDs. An operator following this rule for such a change cannot restart, even with the digest override. Document that restriction or align the restart check with the stated rule. Configure genesis before the first start.

The quickstart copies the template and starts the production image without a pin or opt-out. The node exits instead of starting an isolated chain. Step 2 also starts the stack before this new step. Move genesis configuration before both start commands. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

EXPECTED_GENESIS_HASH=<published genesis hash>
```
At every start the node checks it before it signs anything: on an empty database against `data/genesis.json` (and the snapshot that genesis declares), before block 0 is written; on an existing database against the stored block 0. A mismatch stops the node with exit code 1 and leaves the database as it was. A network that publishes no hash can opt out with `DEMOS_ALLOW_UNPINNED_GENESIS=true`; mainnet validators never set it.
Document the bundled testnet snapshot limitation.
The bundled genesis has no snapshot.manifestSha256, but the image also contains a snapshot. On a fresh database, even a correct pin for that genesis is refused because the snapshot is unbound. Load the mainnet override with the documented launcher.
./run --docker passes -f docker-compose.yml, so Compose does not automatically load docker-compose.override.yml. Do not accept the current schedule after a partial fresh boot.
insertBlock commits block 0 in its own transaction. writeAcceptedSchedule runs in a separate operation. If boot stops between these calls, the next boot sees block 0 but no accepted schedule. acceptLoadedForkSchedule then stores the current genesis-file schedule without comparing it with the schedule committed in block 0. A schedule edit can therefore bypass restart enforcement. Make block-0 creation and schedule persistence atomic, or recover the schedule from block 0 before applying the legacy no-row rule.
Review comment at @src/libs/blockchain/routines/findGenesisBlock.ts around lines
208 - 213:
