Summary

User Impact

Before: assemblies ready at the same time started in the order they became ready. A large dependent could start last and keep the run going alone after every other job had finished.

After: among the ready assemblies, one whose references have all finished starts before one started early (before its references finished). Within each group the one with the most sources goes first, and a tie goes to the one first in dependency order. On a project with 561 assemblies, how long an assembly takes to compile follows its source count closely (Spearman 0.72 to 0.81). Results and their reported order are unchanged.

Changes

  • The ready queue gives out units in this order:
    • a unit whose references are all final before one queued early. Otherwise a large unit queued early could overtake one of its own references still waiting in the queue, compile against Unity's file for it, and compile again once that reference changed its surface;
    • then the unit with the most sources;
    • then the unit first in the plan. Plan order, rather than the order units became ready, keeps the start order the same from run to run.
  • The scheduler now decides the final state of finished units before it starts new ones. The units a finished one releases then compete for the free jobs with those already waiting, instead of queuing behind whatever started first.
  • docs/compile-check.md step 5 says how ready assemblies are ordered.
  • The scheduler tests' fake compiler records the order its invocations start in.

Verification

  • Three new tests, each written first and failing before its change:

    • the ready unit with the most sources starts first, and results stay in plan order;
    • a tie in source count goes to plan order, even when the unit first in the plan became ready later. This test first passed on the old queue, because its order happened to equal plan order, so it was rebuilt so that the order units become ready differs from plan order;
    • a unit whose references are all final starts before a larger unit queued early that references it, which compiles once (added after review; before the fix it compiled twice, start order X D A D B).
  • Mutations, each restored afterwards:

    Mutation Fails
    Drop the final-references-first rule the queued-early test
    Start units queued early first the queued-early test; queues a unit once when its last reference finishes while it waits for a job
    Ignore the source count all three new tests
    Start new units before settling finished ones the tie test; the queued-early test
  • In cli/dispatcher:

    • gofmt -l is empty;
    • go vet ./... and golangci-lint run ./... (0 issues) pass;
    • go test -race passes on internal/compilecheck/... and internal/dispatcher/...;
    • go test -race -count=10 -run TestCompileUnits ./internal/compilecheck/ passes.
  • scripts/check-code-complexity.sh and scripts/check-file-length.sh pass.

📝 Walkthrough

The compile scheduler now starts ready units with more sources first. It uses plan order to break ties and preserves result order. It also settles completed units before starting ready ones.

The schedule records each unit’s source count. The scheduler selects ready units by descending source count and uses plan order for ties. It settles completed units before starting ready ones. Tests check start order and result order. Documentation describes the priority.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 85ec0

The scheduling change is mergeable with owner awareness, but the tie-order test should use a valid dependency-ordered plan.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 32464

The change affects which eligible assembly starts next, without expanding compiler authority or weakening dependency and failure controls. No material security risk was found to be introduced or worsened.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Changing project source counts can influence the start order of already eligible assemblies within a compile run. The changed selection logic does not add assemblies to the plan, select a different executable, or grant additional authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing compiler path removes prior assembly outputs and records before compiling. Interrupted compiler execution returns an error, and reusable records are written only after completed compilation and a stable input-key check. These controls predate the priority change and remain in its execution path.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Outputs retained for blocked units are an existing deliberate policy, not a new cleanup omission. Blocked results are not adopted, and blocking propagates to dependents. Priority can change which optimistic compile starts first, but it does not remove these containment checks.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Put the test plan in dependency order.

A references Z, but this fixture places A before Z. BuildPlan.Units requires each reference to precede its dependent. Put Z first, then A and B, and retain the expected start order Z, A, B. This keeps the tie test within the scheduler’s input contract.

…irst

When more assemblies are ready than jobs are free, the one with the most
sources now starts first, and a tie goes to the one first in the plan. On a
project with 561 assemblies, how long an assembly takes to compile follows its
source count closely (Spearman 0.72 to 0.81), so the longest compiles no longer
start last and leave the other jobs idle at the end.

The schedule now decides the final state of finished assemblies before it
starts new ones, so the assemblies a finished one releases compete for the
free jobs with those already waiting instead of queuing behind them.

The scheduler tests' fake compiler records the order invocations start in, for
the two new tests.
… still waiting to start

Starting the ready unit with the most sources first let a large unit queued
before its references finished overtake one of those references still waiting
in the queue. It then compiled against Unity's file for that reference and
compiled again once the reference changed its surface.

Units whose references are all final now start before units queued early;
source count and plan order decide within each group.
