Summary

  • uloop screenshot --capture-mode rendering --annotate-elements (and --elements-only) now also lists the interactive controls of UI Toolkit panels shown over the Game View, in the same shape as uGUI elements.
  • Every annotated element now carries a UiSystem field: UGUI, UIToolkit, or empty for PhysicsCollider elements.

User Impact

  • Before: only uGUI (Canvas + GraphicRaycaster) elements were annotated. UIDocument buttons, toggles, sliders, text fields, dropdowns, and scrollbars never appeared in AnnotatedElements or on the PNG, so an agent could not find them.
  • After: those controls get labels and bounds on screen-space panels, with a click point picked the same way as uGUI (center first, then the quarter points), skipping points covered by panels in front.

Changes

  • Map Button/RepeatButton, Toggle/RadioButton, Scroller, Slider/SliderInt/MinMaxSlider, TextField, DropdownField/EnumField to the uGUI type words so the existing interaction mapping applies. Parts inside a control (a Scroller's slider and buttons) are not listed separately.
  • Unity has no panel-to-screen API, so the panel's screen-to-panel function is sampled and inverted per axis; non-linear, sheared, swapped, mirrored, or non-finite functions are rejected and their panel lists nothing.
  • Reachability follows Unity's input routing: any panel with a higher sorting order that picks something at a probe point takes the input, including panels that render into a texture. Panels with equal sorting order do not cover each other (their real order is creation order, which is not public).
  • Left out: disabled, visibility: hidden, display: none subtrees, zero-size, fully covered or clipped controls, panels on another display than the Game View, Unity 6 world-space panels, panels rendering into a texture, and nested UIDocuments (reached once through their parent).
  • FindObjectsByType / FindObjectsOfType are split with #if UNITY_6000_4_OR_NEWER like the existing uGUI collector.
  • Assets/UI Toolkit/UnityThemes/UnityDefaultRuntimeTheme.tss is committed: creating a PanelSettings in the Editor generates it when no theme exists, so tests would otherwise regenerate it (and refresh the AssetDatabase) on every fresh checkout.
  • The PlayMode test assembly now references the Screenshot assembly.

Y flip found in a live run

  • Trying the annotation in a demo scene (1920x1080 Game View) showed UI Toolkit controls with the right X but wrong Y: a button at top 100 reported Y -218..-168. The collector flipped with Screen.height, but uloop commands run outside the player loop, where Screen reported 1533x1398 (the last Editor view drawn), while the conversion back to top-left uses the Game View height.
  • The collector now takes the Game View height from the annotator (the same source the overlay renderer and the coordinate conversion use) and does not read Screen. PlayMode tests run inside the player loop, where both heights match, so the new test passes a height unlike Screen.height; the wiring in the annotator is covered by the follow-up E2E PR, which checks real screenshot coordinates.

Verification

  • uloop run-tests --test-mode PlayMode --filter-type class --filter-value UIToolkitElementCollectorTests: 18/18 passed (the Game View height test failed before the fix). Repeated runs leave no new files under Assets/.
  • EditMode UIToolkitScreenMappingTests, UIToolkitElementClassifierTests, UIToolkitReachabilityProbeTests, UIToolkitPanelKindTests, UIElementAnnotatorCollectTests: 43/43 passed (including a mirrored-axis case and world-space stand-in cases added after review). OnionAssemblyDependencyTests: 83/83 passed.
  • New tests for the UiSystem tag, mapping, classifier, and probe were seen failing before their implementation.
  • Unity Compile Check via workflow_dispatch on this branch: 2022.3.62f1 and 6000.5.4f1 both succeeded. Build and Test via workflow_dispatch: build-cli, test-windows-installers, and test-unity-package succeeded.
  • uloop compile on Unity 2022.3: 0 errors, 0 warnings. File length, C# complexity (max 15), and asmdef policy checks pass.
  • Mutations, each reverted after the run:
    • (a) drop the Y flip of the bounds → overlay, scale, partly-covered, and five more PlayMode tests fail
    • (b) front-panel cover check always false → the three cover tests fail
    • (c) keep walking into a classified control → ScrollView test fails
    • (d) drop the fourth-point linearity check → non-linear and shear tests fail
    • (e) drop the layout settle loop → same-frame test fails
    • (f) treat other panels with equal sorting order as in front (>=, excluding the panel itself) → same-sorting-order test fails
    • (g) stop skipping nested documents → nested-document test fails
    • (h) drop render-texture panels from the cover candidates → front render-texture test fails
    • world-space check returning false, without BindingFlags.NonPublic, or with a misspelled WorldSpace → the internal WorldSpace stand-in test fails

  • Live screenshots, clicking UI Toolkit controls, and Device Simulator coordinates: covered by the follow-up E2E PR.

Annotated screenshots are about to list UI Toolkit controls next to uGUI
ones, and a caller needs to tell them apart because only uGUI paths can
be fed back to simulate-mouse-ui --target-path. Add a UiSystem field to
UIElementInfo and set it to "UGUI" for every uGUI element; PhysicsCollider
elements leave it empty.

The value strings live in the Screenshot assembly rather than in
ToolContracts, which only holds the contract shape.
Unity has no panel-to-screen API, and a PanelSettings can replace the
screen-to-panel function with an arbitrary one. To report a control's
bounds in screen pixels, sample the forward function at three points to
derive a per-axis scale and offset, and check a fourth point to reject
functions that are non-linear, sheared, rotated, swapped, or non-finite.
A rejected panel cannot have its controls placed on the screenshot.
Map Button/RepeatButton, Toggle/RadioButton, Scroller, the sliders,
TextField, and DropdownField/EnumField to the same type words the uGUI
annotator uses, so the existing interaction mapping covers both UI
systems. Every other element, including plain elements with a Clickable,
is not annotated.
Mirror the uGUI reachability check for UI Toolkit: walk the same probe
points, skip a point when any panel in front picks something there
(Unity routes the input to that panel), and accept the first point where
the control's own panel picks the control or one of its descendants.
The logic takes picker functions so it can be tested without a panel.
…ettings

Creating a PanelSettings in the Editor runs PanelSettings.Reset, which
assigns the first ThemeStyleSheet in Assets and, when there is none,
writes this default theme and refreshes the AssetDatabase. Committing it
keeps tests that create PanelSettings from regenerating it, and the
refresh, on every fresh checkout.
Annotated screenshots only listed uGUI elements, so controls on a
UIDocument were invisible to agents. Collect them alongside uGUI:

- Walk every active top-level UIDocument whose panel shows on the Game
  View's display and is not world-space; nested documents are reached
  through their parent's root so nothing is listed twice.
- Settle every panel's layout first (Pick is the only public call that
  validates it), so controls added in the same frame report real bounds.
- Report the controls UIToolkitElementClassifier recognizes, skipping
  disabled, hidden, and display:none subtrees and the parts inside a
  control such as a Scroller's buttons.
- Convert bounds to bottom-left screen pixels with the inverted panel
  mapping, then probe the same points as uGUI. Panels with a higher
  sorting order, including ones that render into a texture, cover the
  control because Unity routes screen input to them first.
- Panels rendering into a texture or without an invertible mapping list
  nothing but still cover others.

PlayMode tests build panels in code and pin each row of this behavior;
the PlayMode test assembly now references the Screenshot assembly.

📝 Walkthrough

The screenshot annotator now collects eligible UI Toolkit controls alongside uGUI elements. The collector classifies controls, filters panels and elements by display, visibility, clipping, sorting, and reachability, and reports screen-space bounds and click points. UIElementInfo includes a UiSystem value.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Fractional panel sorting orders can mislabel front-to-back order.

PanelSettings.sortingOrder is a float. CreateFrontPickers compares the raw floats, but SortingOrder is truncated with Mathf.FloorToInt here. Two panels with orders 0.2 and 0.7 both get SortingOrder = 0. AssignLabels then orders their elements by SiblingIndex only. As a result, an element on the back panel can receive an earlier label than an element on the front panel. Labels then no longer follow the documented front-to-back order. This edge case is narrow. Coverage between the panels stays correct.

Unity RuntimePanelUtils.ScreenToPanel coordinate system screen position Screen.height panel input official documentation

💡 Result:

Unity’s **Unity 6.0** docs show that `Input.mousePosition` uses screen pixels with the origin at the **bottom-left**, while UI Toolkit panel coordinates use a **top-left** origin. The documented pattern is to flip Y **before** calling `ScreenToPanel`:

```csharp
Vector2 screenPosition = Input.mousePosition;
screenPosition.y = Screen.height - screenPosition.y;
Vector2 panelPosition =
    RuntimePanelUtils.ScreenToPanel(panel, screenPosition);
```

`ScreenToPanel` then converts that screen position to the panel’s local coordinates, accounting for panel scaling. So, when using `Input.mousePosition`, don’t pass it unchanged if you need the top-left-origin UI Toolkit position. ([docs.unity3d.com](https://docs.unity3d.com/jp/current/ScriptReference/UIElements.RuntimePanelUtils.ScreenToPanel.html?utm_source=openai))

Citations:

- 1: https://docs.unity3d.com/jp/current/ScriptReference/UIElements.RuntimePanelUtils.ScreenToPanel.html?utm_source=openai

Separate panel-input and response-coordinate heights.

RuntimePanelUtils.ScreenToPanel requires the top-left point produced with Screen.height. The response conversion uses GameViewSize.y. Using one height for both shifts stored UI Toolkit bounds and points, while replacing Screen.height with GameViewSize.y also shifts reachability probes and can make Panel.Pick reject reachable controls.

In the element-collection flow around FindReachablePoint, keep Screen.height for
input bounds and reachability probes, but use
GameViewCoordinateUtility.GetMainGameViewSize().y for response bounds and the
stored reachable-point conversion. Separate these heights so panel picking
remains correct while returned coordinates use the Game View height.

A screen-to-panel function that mirrors an axis has a negative scale.
Inverting it swaps the panel rectangle's minimum and maximum, so the
reported bounds had BoundsMin greater than BoundsMax. Treat a negative
scale like a zero one: the panel's controls are not listed.
Write each classifier branch as a braced block like the rest of the
package, and state in the PlayMode test summary that PanelSettings.Reset
assigns the project's default theme, which is why element sizes are set
explicitly.
The world-space check only ever ran its "no renderMode property" path:
the project's Unity 2022.3 has no PanelSettings.renderMode, and CI's
Unity 6 EditMode legs do not run these tests. Move the check into
HasWorldSpaceRenderMode, which looks the property up on the object's
runtime type, and test it with stand-in types for an internal WorldSpace
value, a public screen-space value, and a missing property.

🟡 Minor · Resolve equal-order panels with the existing raycast… · UIToolkitElementCollector.cs:123-145

Packages/src/Editor/FirstPartyTools/Screenshot/UIToolkitAnnotation/UIToolkitElementCollector.cs:123-145
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Resolve equal-order panels with the existing raycast context.

When equal-order screen-overlay panels overlap, CreateFrontPickers excludes both peers. Unity routes the point to the first PanelRaycaster result, so the collector can annotate a lower panel that cannot receive the click.

Pass the UiRaycastHelper.RaycastContext created by UIElementAnnotator.CollectInteractiveElements into UIToolkitElementCollector. For equal-order peers, use EventSystem.RaycastAll and the first PanelRaycaster.panel result at each probe point. Convert the collector’s top-left probe back to bottom-left before raycasting. Do not treat every equal-order peer as a front picker, because that suppresses both fully overlapping controls.

Annotated UI Toolkit controls came out with the wrong Y in a real
screenshot (a button at top 100 reported Y -218..-168 in a 1080-high
Game View). The collector flipped to a bottom-left origin with
Screen.height, but uloop commands run outside the player loop, where
Screen reports the last Editor view drawn (1398 high here), while
ConvertToSimCoordinates flips back with the Game View height.

Pass the Game View height into the collector, the same source the
overlay renderer and coordinate conversion use, and stop reading Screen
there. PlayMode tests ran inside the player loop, where both heights
match, so a new test passes a height unlike Screen.height.
