Summary

  • When a file has no compiled-source baseline (for example before the first compile after installing or updating the package), hot reload no longer starts a compile just because the file declares an interface, abstract, or extern method.
  • Those members are still reported as Skipped, but the reason now says what actually happened: they have no body to patch, and an edit to only their default values, attributes, or parameter names cannot be detected, so compile only if you made one.

User Impact

  • Before: editing only a method body in such a file produced a Skipped row for every bodyless member with "Interface members are not patchable. Run 'uloop compile'." or "Methods without a body (abstract/extern) are skipped.". With the default --compile-on-skip auto in Edit Mode, that row alone made the CLI run a full compile (tens of seconds and a domain reload on large projects); with off or in Play Mode, the agent read the sentence and compiled.
  • After: the row stays (so a real change to a default value or attribute is not silently lost) with a reason that asks for a compile only when one of those was edited. The row no longer triggers the automatic compile, and it no longer counts as a skipped edit anywhere else in the response: a run that patched the rest of the file is Applied, and a file holding only such members is NothingToApply without the "Run 'uloop compile' to apply these edits" message or next action. Any other Skipped row in the same run still counts as before.
  • An edit that removes a compiled body (virtual to abstract, a method made extern, a default interface method made bodyless) is not affected: the compiled body keeps running until a compile, so those rows keep their compile reasons.

Changes

  • New worker reason MethodTransformBodylessNotCompared with its sentence.
  • The transform worker uses it for a method without a body whose compiled counterpart has no body either (abstract or extern) when there is no baseline, replacing whatever skip reason it would have had (the interface reason, the no-body reason, and hard skips such as generic type / struct host / partial). Added methods keep their reasons (they need a compile regardless), and so do explicit interface implementations (never matched against the compiled type, so they cannot be called compiled). With a baseline nothing changes.
  • One property, HotReloadMethodOutcome.IsBodylessNotCompared, decides that such a row is not an unapplied edit. It is used by the compile fallback (HasUnappliedEdit, which also gates the single-compile line in Message), by the Outcome Skipped check, and by the all-skipped check behind the all-skipped Message and RecommendedNextAction.
  • The compiled-method lookup is split out of MatchCompiledOrdinaryMethod as FindCompiledOrdinaryMethod so the worker can read the matched method's abstract/extern flags.
  • The hot-reload skill docs, the generated skill copies, and the tool catalog (description only) are updated.
  • Test hosts: a compiled abstract class, a static class with an extern method, and a generic abstract class.

Behavior table (no baseline unless noted):

Case Before After
Compiled bodyless interface method Interface reason Not compared
Compiled default interface method (has a body) Interface reason unchanged
Bodyless method added to a compiled interface Interface reason unchanged
Compiled abstract / extern method No-body reason Not compared
Concrete method beside them patched unchanged
Compiled abstract method on a generic type Generic hard skip Not compared
Method with a compiled body made abstract / extern No-body reason unchanged
Default interface method made bodyless Interface reason unchanged
With baseline, bodyless interface method whose default value changed Interface reason unchanged
With baseline, unchanged bodyless interface method no row unchanged

Accepted trade-off: in a file with no baseline, changing only the default values, attributes, or parameter names of a compiled bodyless member no longer compiles automatically under auto; the row's sentence asks for a compile instead. These rarely affect runtime behavior (default values are baked into callers). A signature change is classified as an added method and still triggers the compile.

Out of scope:

  • Constructors, operators, conversions, and explicit event accessors go through a separate path and are still Skipped with their own reasons when there is no baseline.
  • A compiled bodyless partial method declaration is expected to get the new reason as well; not verified (no such compiled fixture).
  • The number of rows, SkippedTotal, and Warnings grouping are unchanged.

Response table (rows of the requested file):

Rows Outcome before Outcome after All-skipped Message / next action CompileFallback (auto, Edit Mode)
only not-compared rows NothingApplied NothingToApply no longer NotNeeded (was Requested)
Patched + not-compared PartiallyApplied Applied — NotNeeded (was Requested)
not-compared + other Skipped NothingApplied NothingApplied yes Requested
Patched + not-compared + other Skipped PartiallyApplied PartiallyApplied — Requested

Verification

  • uloop run-tests --filter-type class, one class at a time: TransformWorkerAddedMemberTests 93/93, HotReloadWorkerReasonTextTests 148/148, HotReloadCompileFallbackDeciderTests 25/25, HotReloadDefaultSelectionEnumLeaveOutE2ETests 3/3, HotReloadWorkerNoticeAppenderTests 13/13, HotReloadSkippedMemberCompileNoteTests 23/23, HotReloadToolTests 110/110, HotReloadApplyOutcomeTests 11/11, HotReloadRequestedFileOutcomeSummaryTests 7/7.
  • Red before the fix: exactly the four "not compared" worker tests and the fallback test for bodyless-only rows failed.
  • Mutations (each reverted afterwards):
    • drop the baseline check → the with-baseline default-value test fails
    • drop the added-method check → the added interface method test fails
    • treat every method as bodyless → the interface test fails on the default interface method
    • revert only the interface branch → only the interface test fails
    • replace only the no-body reason in the decision branch → only the generic-type test fails
    • revert the decision branch → the abstract, extern, and generic-type tests fail
    • stop counting every Skipped row in HasUnappliedEdit → the mixed-rows test fails (plus three existing tests)
    • drop the compiled abstract/extern check → the made-abstract, made-extern, and default-made-bodyless tests fail
    • drop the property from the Outcome Skipped check → the only-not-compared and Patched-beside tests fail
    • drop it from the all-skipped check → the only-not-compared test fails (on the message)
    • drop it from HasUnappliedEdit → the only-not-compared test fails (on CompileFallback)
  • scripts/check-file-length.sh and scripts/check-code-complexity.sh: no findings. check-skill-size: within the limit. scripts/sync-tool-docs.sh --check: catalog matches.

…hosts

The worker tests for bodyless members without a compiled-source baseline
need real compiled types to classify against: an abstract method, an extern
method, and an abstract method on a generic type (which the worker hard-skips
before it looks at the body). Each host also carries a concrete method where
the test needs to show the rest of the file is still patched.
…has no baseline

Without a compiled-source baseline the worker targets every method in the
file, and a compiled member without a body (a bodyless interface method, an
abstract or extern method) came back Skipped with a reason that pointed at a
compile: "Interface members are not patchable. Run 'uloop compile'." or the
generic "Methods without a body" text. Editing only a body elsewhere in the
file was enough to produce it.

Such a member has nothing to patch. What the worker cannot tell is whether
its default values, attributes or parameter names changed, so the row stays
and now carries MethodTransformBodylessNotCompared, which says exactly that
and asks for a compile only if one of those was edited.

The reason replaces any skip reason for such a member, hard skips (generic,
struct host, partial) included, since no reason about patching applies to a
member with no body. Added methods keep their reasons (they need a compile
regardless), as do explicit interface implementations, which are never
matched against the compiled type and so cannot be called compiled. With a
baseline nothing changes.
…ot compare

With the default --compile-on-skip auto, any Skipped row in a requested file
makes the CLI compile in the same command. A file with no compiled-source
baseline that declares a bodyless member (an interface method, an abstract
or extern method) therefore always paid for a compile, even when only a body
elsewhere was edited and every body patched.

HasUnappliedEdit now leaves out Skipped rows whose worker reason is
MethodTransformBodylessNotCompared: such a member has no body to apply. Any
other Skipped row beside it still counts. The cost is that changing only the
default values, attributes or parameter names of such a member no longer
compiles on its own; the row's sentence asks for a compile in that case,
and a signature change is classified as an added method, which still counts.
…t-reload skill

The hot-reload skill said every Skipped row of a requested file makes
--compile-on-skip compile, and that the single-compile line is left off
whenever such a row exists. Rows for a compiled member without a body that
could not be compared (no source baseline) are now left out of both, so the
parameter table, the CompileFallback and Warnings entries, and the
no-baseline paragraph of the scope reference say so, including what the
row's reason asks the reader to do.

The tool catalog and the generated skill copies are regenerated from the
edited sources.

📝 Walkthrough

The transform worker now assigns a distinct skip reason to existing bodyless methods when no baseline is available. The compile-fallback decider excludes those rows. Tests and guidance cover the reason, detectable edits, and fallback behavior.

Generic-constraint edits may remain unapplied without clear advice to compile. Correct the guidance before merging, or accept this bounded risk.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 475c4

The change is narrowly scoped and preserves handling of failures and other skipped edits. However, an Applied result does not guarantee that bodyless-member metadata matches the edited source; those edits can still require an explicit compile.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected change affects classification and compile decisions within the existing hot-reload pipeline rather than creating another executable patch path. The changed queue helpers are internal and remain called by the transform planner; their public-entrypoint routing labels do not establish new external reachability.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The downstream exemption requires a Skipped outcome with the exact MethodTransformBodylessNotCompared reason. It does not exempt Failed outcomes or suppress other skipped edits merely because an incomparable row appears in the same run.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The inspected application pipeline keeps generation mutation behind compilation, membership, cancellation, stale-state, and preflight checks. The new fallback predicate consumes completed outcomes and does not itself commit live generations. This preserves the inspected failure-containment boundary, without establishing complete cross-command concurrency guarantees.

…s body

Without a baseline, the not-compared reason only looked at the edited
source. The compiled-method match compares name, arity, static-ness and
signature but not abstract or extern, so an edit that removed a body
(virtual to abstract, a method made extern, a default interface method made
bodyless) got the new reason and no automatic compile, while the compiled
body kept running until a compile.

The reason now also requires the matched compiled method to have no body
(abstract or extern). The parameter match is split out of
MatchCompiledOrdinaryMethod as FindCompiledOrdinaryMethod so both use the
same lookup, and the decision is made once per method.
…ped edits

When every requested-file row was a bodyless member that could not be
compared (an interface-only file, for example), the compile fallback said
NotNeeded but the rest of the response still asked for a compile: Outcome
NothingApplied, the all-skipped Message ending "Run 'uloop compile' to
apply these edits.", and the all-skipped RecommendedNextAction. An agent
reading it compiled anyway.

Whether such a row is an unapplied edit is now one property,
HotReloadMethodOutcome.IsBodylessNotCompared, used by the compile fallback,
the Outcome's Skipped check, and the all-skipped check. A run with only
such rows reports NothingToApply without asking for a compile; a run that
patched methods beside them reports Applied. Any other Skipped row of the
requested files still counts as before. The rows themselves, SkippedTotal,
the missing-baseline warning, and the Warnings echo stay.
…d the all-skipped advice alone

The output reference now lists those rows under NothingToApply and says a
run that patched the rest of the file is Applied. The no-baseline paragraph
of the scope reference says the compiled member must lack a body too, and
that an edit removing a compiled body keeps the ordinary Skipped reasons.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Include generic-constraint edits in the compile advice.

If a bodyless interface method changes only where T : class to where T : struct, the compiled-method match does not compare that constraint. The new skip reason prevents compile fallback, but “compile only if you made one” excludes this edit. The compiled constraint remains in force. Update the source reason text and skill guidance to tell users to compile for generic-constraint and other declaration-only edits that cannot be compared. (learn.microsoft.com)
