The extension ran its own copy of the delivery loop, which had drifted from the dashboard tab's (found in the PR #8 review). It now imports the same QueueDrainer as the tab.

What changes

  • apps/extension/drain.js is generated from apps/web/src/lib/drain.ts (pnpm --filter @bridgehook/extension build:drain) and imported by the module service worker. drain.test.mjs fails if the committed file is stale; Biome ignores it because it is generated.
  • New behaviour in the extension:
    • It stops at an event another executor holds and looks again in 15s, instead of letting newer webhooks overtake it with nothing to re-wake the loop.
    • If the relay refuses a report, it re-sends the answer, never the webhook. Oversize answers are shrunk on 413/431.
    • A lost claim skips the report.
    • A timed-out handler is recorded once rather than re-run.
  • /api/me/stream accepts the device token, so a paired extension gets push delivery without a dashboard session instead of polling.

Verified

  • Extension tests 2/2 (drift guard, exports); web drainer 13/13; relay 72/72.
  • Typecheck, Biome, and the web and docs builds are clean.
  • Real-extension e2e (offline.mjs, extension loaded in Chromium against a local relay), 21/21:
    • 30-webhook offline backlog delivered in order, no duplicates
    • localhost outage
    • poison payload recorded after exactly 3 attempts
    • a hung handler recorded once and not resent
    • the stream connects with the device token (GET /api/me/stream 200)
  • MCP e2e with this extension: all passed.

Ships to users with the 0.2.0 Chrome Web Store upload (HAL-2385, done by the owner).

Closes HAL-2422

Summary by Sourcery

Unify extension and dashboard webhook draining while improving reliable push delivery, retries, and failure handling.

New Features:

  • Enable paired extensions to receive push webhook delivery through the authenticated user stream without an active dashboard session.

Bug Fixes:

  • Prevent newer webhooks from overtaking events held by another executor and avoid re-sending webhooks after response-reporting failures or extension worker timeouts.
  • Handle oversized relay responses, lost claims, and repeated forwarding failures without leaving events stuck or duplicating delivery.

Enhancements:

  • Share the dashboard tab's QueueDrainer implementation with the extension through a generated build artifact.
  • Document the extension's shorter handler timeout and add safeguards to detect drift between the shared source and generated extension code.

CI:

  • Add a CI test job covering relay, web drainer, and extension tests.

Documentation:

  • Update architecture and browser-bridge documentation to describe the shared drainer, extension behavior, and handler-time differences.

Tests:

  • Add extension tests verifying generated drainer freshness and required exports.

Chores:

  • Refresh project architecture and development guidance for the extension, MCP, deployment, and documentation workflows.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Extension event delivery now retries eligible failures and reports final outcomes more reliably.
    • Authenticated device-token accounts can use the user event stream; anonymous accounts remain unsupported.
    • Oversized relay responses are retried with reduced content.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Localhost timeout failures are now reported distinctly.

The extension ran its own copy of the delivery loop, which had drifted
from the dashboard tab's: it skipped past an event another executor
held (so newer webhooks overtook it, and nothing re-woke the loop when
that claim went stale), and it treated a report the relay refused as
delivered (so the event was forwarded again later).

drain.js is now generated from apps/web/src/lib/drain.ts and imported by
the module service worker, so the tab and the extension run one
algorithm: stop at a foreign-held event and look again in 15s, re-send
a refused answer instead of the webhook, shrink oversize answers on
413/431, skip the report when the claim was lost, record a timed-out
handler once instead of re-running it. drain.test.mjs fails if the
committed drain.js is stale.

The live stream (/api/me/stream) also accepts the device token, so a
paired extension gets push delivery without a dashboard session instead
of falling back to polling.

Reviewer's Guide

The extension now delegates ordered webhook delivery to a generated copy of the dashboard’s shared QueueDrainer, aligning claim, retry, timeout, outage, and reporting behavior across executors. It also enables device-token SSE delivery and hardens response reporting against relay size limits, with build tooling and drift coverage protecting the generated implementation.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The extension now uses QueueDrainer for service bridge queues, fits oversized relay response uploads after specified HTTP errors, and supports the authenticated user stream for device-token accounts.

Changes

Extension bridge

Layer / File(s) Summary
Queue drainer implementation and build
apps/extension/drain.js, apps/extension/scripts/build-drain.mjs, apps/extension/drain.test.mjs, apps/extension/package.json, biome.json
Adds QueueDrainer with claim heartbeats, forwarding and report retries, and retained unreported answers. Adds compilation and test scripts, module checks, and an ignore entry for the generated file.
Bridge wiring and outcomes
apps/extension/background.js
Connects each service bridge to QueueDrainer and uses drain outcomes for bridge status and retry scheduling. Response uploads retry once with fitted body and headers after HTTP 413 or 431. Localhost timeout failures include timedOut: true.
Device-token user stream
apps/extension/background.js
Starts and reconnects the user stream for either authenticated account source. Stops the stream when the account becomes anonymous.

Restarting a bridge while a webhook is being forwarded can deliver that webhook twice. It can also drop an answer the extension still owes the relay. Preserve the delivery state across restarts before merging.

Comment thread apps/extension/background.js Outdated
Review follow-ups on PR #10:
- Chrome stops an extension service worker when a fetch() response takes
more than 30s, so the 5-minute localhost timeout could never fire and
a slow handler was re-sent after every restart. The extension now
times out at 25s, and keeps forwards in flight in
chrome.storage.session: an event whose forward was cut off is recorded
once as a timeout instead of being sent again. The dashboard tab
keeps its 5 minutes; the docs say so.
- Toggling a service off and on mid-forward no longer sends the webhook
twice: the new drainer waits for the previous pass.
- A stopped bridge no longer writes its status; retries and refused
reports show in the popup again; a restart clears the down flag so
  the next outage notifies.
- The live stream restarts when the signed-in user changes.
- CI gains a test job (relay, drainer, extension drift guard).

Also refreshes CLAUDE.md: current architecture, local deploy steps, and
where the brand tokens and logo live.
