Library: link files of the same song, so the best one plays (MP3 + studio WAV) - #84
Admins can link library tracks that are the same song in different files, typically a leak's tagged MP3 and the 24-bit studio WAV it was encoded from. The fullest-tagged track stays in the library and shows its tags; the group plays its best file.
Backend
Migration 0031 adds tracks.linked_to. A linked track is hidden from library listings via the existing library_visible flag (as for the TIDAL rows that only back playlists). It keeps its own row, file, tags and audio hash, so ingest, rescans and dedup are untouched.
library.LinkTracks merges two tracks' groups. It shows the fullest-tagged one (edited on purpose, then with performers, then on a real album; ties keep the target's) and moves the others' playlist entries, listening stats and history onto it. UnlinkTrack makes a track its own again.
GetTrack / GetTrackPlayback describe and serve the group's best file: lossless first, then sample rate, then bitrate (an M4A at ≥500 kbps counts as ALAC). Playback, downloads and share clips all follow. Stream falls back to the next file if the best can't be opened, e.g. deleted from disk but not yet pruned.
Triggers: when the shown track is deleted or soft-deleted, the fullest linked track takes its place and gets its playlist entries and stats. The BEFORE DELETE trigger only moves references; re-pointing happens in AFTER triggers, with a deferred FK, so one statement can delete a whole group. They fire before 0020's TIDAL fallback triggers, which then find nothing left to move.
An admin delete of the shown track removes the whole group and its files.
Search and the track list's "aka" line include linked tracks' titles and file names.
POST / DELETE /api/admin/tracks/{id}/links (admin only). GET /api/tracks/{id} gains linked and linked_to.
Desktop
Track info → Versions: Link a file opens a library search pre-filled with the song's title, and picking a result links it.
The Versions table compares each file's tags, format and bitrate, marks the file that plays, and has Unlink on linked files. The Audio section describes the file that plays.
Mobile gets no new UI, but plays the best file through the same endpoints.
Why
Ingest only merges byte-identical audio, so an MP3 and its WAV stayed separate tracks, with the good metadata on the lossy one. Automatic cross-format matching was researched first: a Chromaprint fingerprint plus a waveform-subtraction check, tested on real leak files. It was set aside because near-identical versions (v2 vs v2.2) and offset copies of one recording overlap on the fingerprint, so linking is manual and everything after it is automatic.
Verification
go test ./... against Postgres. New: internal/library/links_test.go (quality ranking) and internal/integration/track_links_test.go (link from either side, hidden from listings, search by either name, references and stats merged, WAV streamed with fallback to the other file, unlink, promotion on hard and soft delete, group merging, admin delete of a group, deleting a group in one statement, refused links). gofmt, go vet.
core: typecheck, vitest (655).
frontend: lint, typecheck, vitest (375, incl. 3 new Track info tests for comparison, linking and unlinking).
npm run lint:ui: full suite green, with two new specs (linked files; link search) stress-run 200/200.
Not run locally: mobile checks (the shared mobile node_modules is stale here); CI's mobile job covers the additive core type changes.
Review
11 rounds with Claude Fable 5.1 (the last one clean), plus CodeRabbit (one finding, fixed and confirmed). Codex was at its usage limit. What the rounds added:
Links stay one level deep. Soft-deleted linked files are re-pointed and locked along with the live ones.
Locking. Links and deletes (admin delete, prune, the watcher's soft delete) lock a whole linked group in id order with FOR NO KEY UPDATE, so playlist adds and plays aren't blocked. They re-check the group after locking and retry in a fresh transaction on a race or a deadlock. Tests count Postgres deadlocks during races and require none.
Stats.move_track_refs moves stats in one statement, so a play recorded mid-link isn't lost.
Stale hidden ids. Writes by a client that still holds a hidden track's id (play, scrobble, favorite, playlist add) go to the shown track. References that still reach a hidden row move to the song when that file is deleted or soft-deleted, including one-statement purges.
Admin delete returns only live linked files' paths, so a hidden file that came back as a new track keeps its file. Otherwise it behaves exactly as on main.
Track info. Escape cancels the file search, focus returns to "Link a file", and each Unlink button names its file.
Ingest only merges files whose audio is byte-identical, so an MP3 and the
studio WAV it was encoded from stay two tracks. An admin can now link them:
the fullest-tagged track stays in the library and shows its tags, and the
group plays its best file.
- Migration 0031: tracks.linked_to. A linked track is hidden from library
listings (library_visible, as for the TIDAL rows that only back
playlists) but keeps its own row, file, tags and audio hash, so ingest,
rescans and dedup treat it as before.
- library.LinkTracks merges two tracks' groups, shows the fullest-tagged
(edited on purpose, then with performers, then on a real album) and
moves the others' playlist entries, stats and history onto it.
UnlinkTrack makes a track its own again.
- GetTrack and GetTrackPlayback describe and serve the group's best file:
lossless first, then sample rate, then bitrate. Stream falls back to the
next file when the best can't be opened.
- When the shown track is deleted or soft-deleted, triggers hand its place,
playlist entries and stats to the fullest linked track. An admin delete
of the shown track removes the whole group and its files.
- Search and the list's "aka" line include linked tracks' titles.
- POST/DELETE /api/admin/tracks/{id}/links (admin only); GET
/api/tracks/{id} lists the linked files.

Admins get "Link a file" under Versions: a library search, filled in with
the song's title, links the picked track with this one. The Versions
table then compares every file's tags, format and bitrate, marks the one
that plays, and offers Unlink on the linked ones. The Audio section
describes the file that plays.

Walkthrough
The change adds linked-track groups for local library files. It selects shown and playback files, moves track references when groups change, exposes group details and admin endpoints, and adds link and unlink controls to the track-info dialog.
Changes: Linked Track Files
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Linked-track persistence and deletion lifecycle backend/internal/db/migrations/0031_track_links.*.sql, backend/internal/dbutil/dbutil.go, backend/internal/library/store.go
The migration adds linked-track relationships, reference merging, and promotion behavior after deletion. Store deletion operations lock linked groups. Global deletion gathers paths from linked tracks and aliases, then returns paths not used by remaining live tracks or aliases.
Library linking, details, and playback backend/internal/library/links.go, backend/internal/library/read.go, backend/internal/library/links_test.go
The library selects shown and playback files, links and unlinks groups, returns linked-track details, and includes linked titles and paths in search. Playback reads expose alternate files. Tests cover playback ordering.
Admin routes expose linking and unlinking. Track responses include linked-file data, and streaming tries alternate files. Writes using hidden track IDs resolve to the shown track. API types and integration tests cover the behavior.
The dialog compares linked files and provides admin link and unlink controls. Search filters eligible tracks. Fixtures, mocks, styles, and tests cover the UI behavior.

- A track soft-deleted with its root kept its link when its group was
merged under another track, or its shown track unlinked. That left a
chain, and deleting the formerly shown track then failed the deferred
foreign key (rescan prune warnings, a 500 on admin delete). showLinked
now re-points every track linked to the group's previous shown tracks,
deleted or not. As a backstop, deleting a linked track moves up any
tracks still linked to it. (Fable round 1, high; CodeRabbit, major)
- Linking a pair from both sides at once failed one request with "try
again". Link and unlink now read the groups again when another link
changed them; an already-linked pair returns its shown track.
- Search finds a song by its hidden files' aliases too.
- DialogShell leaves Escape to controls marked data-owns-escape, as it
already does for an open listbox. Escape in the file search cancels the
search instead of closing Track info. Focus returns to "Link a file"
after a cancel, a link or an unlink. Each Unlink button names its file.
(Fable round 1)

…e pass
- Retrying inside the link's transaction kept the first attempt's locks
and could deadlock with a third link, surfacing as a 500. Each attempt
now runs in its own transaction, and a deadlock retries like any other
race. A race outlasting the retries is a 400 "try again". (Fable round
2, medium)
- The deadlocks had a second cause. The lock query found a group's members
from a snapshot taken before it waited, so a track another link added
meanwhile wasn't locked, and the later update took its lock out of
order. After locking, the members are read again and the attempt starts
over if any are new; holding the shown tracks keeps them final. A stress
test (120 links and unlinks racing over 8 tracks) saw 9 deadlocks per
run before and none in 30 runs now.
- Escape cancels the file search from its Cancel button and results too,
not only from the search field. (Fable round 2, low)
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…in id order
- A link held its tracks FOR UPDATE, which blocks the key-share lock a new
playlist entry, play or stat takes on its track. A user adding a track
to a playlist while an admin linked it deadlocked with the link's move
of playlist entries, and the add failed with a 500. FOR NO KEY UPDATE
still excludes other links and deletes but lets those inserts through.
A new test races the two 60 times; it deadlocked within a few rounds
under FOR UPDATE. (Fable round 3, medium)
- DeleteGlobalTrack locks the track and those linked to it in id order
before deleting them, as links do. (Fable round 3, low)
- Escape in the file search waits, like Cancel, while a link request is in
flight. (Fable round 3, nit)
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…s group
- move_track_refs copied a track's stats in one statement and deleted them
in the next. A play recorded on the hidden-to-be track between the two
was deleted without being counted. The move is one statement now
(DELETE ... RETURNING into the upsert), so it waits for the play and
carries its count. A deterministic test holds a play open across a link;
the old function counted 5 of 6 plays. (Fable round 4, low)
- DeleteGlobalTrack locked its group from a snapshot taken before it
waited, so a track a link added meanwhile wasn't locked and could
deadlock the delete. It re-reads the group after locking and starts over
in a fresh transaction on a change or a deadlock, as links do. (Fable
round 4, low)
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A client that still held a hidden track's id (it was queued or playing when
the track was linked) wrote plays, favorites and playlist entries onto the
hidden row, and a prune of that file then deleted them.
- RecordPlay, Scrobble, NowPlaying, Favorite and Unfavorite, a playlist add
and the playlist contains check resolve a hidden id to its shown track
(library.ShownTrack). Get, the cover, Stream and Reorder keep the exact
row.
- Deleting or soft-deleting a hidden track moves whatever references still
reached it to the track it's linked to, as deleting the shown track
already moves its own to the heir.
(Fable round 5, low)
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…roup first
- A root purge soft-deleting the shown track and a hidden file in one
statement left the hidden file's playlist entries and plays on its
deleted row, since its trigger found the shown track already gone. The
hidden row's references now go to linked_target: the shown track if
live, else its heir (never the row being deleted, which a BEFORE DELETE
trigger still sees), else the track the row was re-pointed to. The same
holds for a one-statement hard delete. (Fable round 6, low)
- A prune of the shown file and an admin delete of a hidden one could
deadlock: each delete now writes onto the other's row. HardDeleteByPath
and DeleteGlobalTrack lock the whole linked group in id order first
(lockTrackGroups), as links do, and start over on a race. (Fable round
6, low)
- Reword the refs trigger's comment. (Fable round 6, note)
Both new tests fail on the previous head and pass now.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…d files too
- lockTrackGroups held the surviving track FOR UPDATE, which blocks the
key-share lock a playlist add or a play takes on it. With a stale
entry for the hidden file in the same playlist, the user's add
deadlocked with the delete and failed. It's FOR NO KEY UPDATE now, as
in lockLinkGroups. (Fable round 7, low)
- A link locked only live tracks but re-pointed soft-deleted ones, so it
could deadlock with a prune of such a file (retried, but still a
deadlock). lockLinkGroups locks the whole group, soft-deleted tracks
included, and returns the live ones. (Fable round 7, low)
- Tests now count Postgres's deadlocks during the races, retried ones
included (deadlocksDuring): prune versus admin delete, the link/unlink
storm, a hidden delete versus a playlist add, and a link versus a
prune of a soft-deleted file. All see none. On the previous head the
playlist add failed with a deadlock and the link/prune race counted 7
to 10. (Fable round 7, note)
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…t delete locks its group
- DeleteGlobalTrack handed out the files of soft-deleted linked tracks
too. A hidden file that went and came back is ingested as a new
track, so deleting the song removed that track's file. It now returns
only the live linked tracks' files, and AdminDelete leaves any file
another track still uses (FilePathInUse). (Fable round 8, low)
- The watcher's SoftDeleteByPath could deadlock with a link, and the
watcher drops the error, leaving a missing file live. It locks the
file's linked group in id order first and retries, as the hard deletes
do. (Fable round 8, low)
Both new tests fail on the previous head and pass now.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
FilePathInUse counts soft-deleted rows too, so the handler check kept a
plain track's file whenever a stale soft-deleted row shared its path (a
file rewritten in place, a root removed and re-added), and the song came
back on the next rescan. DeleteGlobalTrack now returns, from inside its
transaction, only paths no live track plays from or keeps as a copy.
The handler is back to main's behavior. A handler-level test with files
on disk covers a plain track with a stale twin (its file goes, which
failed on the previous head) and a linked file that came back as a new
track (it stays). (Fable round 9, medium)
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The live-owner filter kept a file whenever another live row shared its
path. That is the stale duplicate ingest leaves when a file is rewritten
with other audio, and main deleted the file in that case. The filter is
gone. The case it guarded, a linked file that went (its row
soft-deleted) and came back as a new track, is already covered by
collecting only live linked tracks' files. Unlinked tracks now delete
exactly as on main. A test pins the stale-live-twin case. (Fable round
10, low)
