Adds Inspect(io.Reader) to identify an SBOM type and specification version without reading the complete document or building the package model. JSON inspection uses Go 1.27 encoding/json/jsontext token reads and value skipping, with streaming paths for CycloneDX XML and SPDX tag-value documents.

The existing Detect([]byte) and Parse([]byte) APIs remain unchanged. The module now requires Go 1.27.3.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a way to identify an SBOM’s format and specification version from a reader without parsing the full document. Supports CycloneDX and SPDX JSON, XML, and tag-value formats, and can return the metadata after finding the required information.
  • Documentation
    • Added usage guidance and an example for inspecting SBOM metadata.
  • Chores
    • Updated the required Go version.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The pull request adds Inspect and Metadata to identify an SBOM’s type and specification version from JSON, XML, or tag-value input. It also adds tests, a benchmark, README guidance, and updates the declared Go version and toolchain.

Changes: SBOM metadata inspection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Inspection API and dispatch
inspect.go
Adds Metadata and Inspect. The function validates the reader, skips leading whitespace and one BOM, selects an inspection format, and handles unrecognized content and read errors.
Format-specific metadata extraction
inspect.go, sbom.go, spdx_tagvalue.go
Adds metadata extraction for JSON, XML, and tag-value inputs. Reuses SPDX tag constants in existing JSON detection and tag-value parsing.
Inspection validation and usage
inspect_test.go, README.md, bench_test.go, go.mod
Adds format, fixture, bounded-read, long-text, and error tests, plus a benchmark and README example. Updates the Go version and toolchain declarations.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 8362f

The new API extracts metadata without adding privileged operations. Successful inspection does not establish complete-document validity or authenticity. No security regression was established in the reviewed library paths, but downstream use and deployment exposure are not established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The evidenced exposure is the calling process consuming an attacker-influenced reader and receiving attacker-influenced classification metadata. The inspected path introduces no service access, credential use, or persistent write. The supplied dependency relationships connect tests to inspection and shared SBOM types; they do not establish downstream tenant, service, or environment exposure.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — An input can present recognizable metadata before malformed or misleading unread content. That becomes a security bypass only if a consumer treats successful inspection as a validation or trust decision. No such consumer was established. Detect already supported prefix-oriented classification at the PR base, and the README explicitly describes early stopping, so this behavior alone is not retained as an introduced vulnerability.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — The new API does not promote document metadata into authenticated identity or privileged authority. Its trust boundary remains between supplied content and the caller interpreting the result. Full-document parsing and any authenticity or policy checks remain separate responsibilities; Inspect does not replace an existing enforced control in the reviewed implementation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Early stopping reduces work when metadata appears near the beginning, but Inspect defines no overall byte budget or deadline. Whitespace scanning, metadata-late inputs, and tag-value text scanning can continue until recognition, an error, or end of input. Resource containment for a remote or indefinite reader is therefore not guaranteed by this API.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — For security-sensitive integrations, explicitly distinguish metadata recognition from complete-document validation and authenticity checks. Apply caller-specific input limits and reader deadlines when inspecting untrusted streams. These are integration safeguards, not verified defects in an evidenced production caller.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 4.35% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 23 functions across 5 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.
