fix(debian): route packages by filename rather than /pool prefix - #672
I added a Debian/apt proxy for https://download.docker.com/linux/debian, but the .deb files weren't being cached properly.
Not all apt repos have /pool so this changes to looking for .deb as cacheable files. Debian source files are always streamed -- I'm honestly not enough of an apt expert here to know if could do better on the caching front there.
In the end I think this is fairly similar to e.g. the RPM handler, and I've been able to proxy official Debian repos + third-party ones like Docker successfully with these changes.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Debian package downloads are now recognized by the .deb file extension, including files outside the usual pool/ path layout.
Package filenames without a directory path are now parsed correctly.
Named-archive caching now keeps packages from different repository paths distinct.
DebianHandler now routes .deb files by filename suffix instead of requiring a pool/ path. The package path parser also extracts package details from a bare filename. Tests cover both behaviors, and the architecture documentation describes the routing and cache keys.

Summary
.deb routing and path parsing internal/handler/debian.go, internal/handler/debian_test.go, docs/architecture.md
Routes sends paths ending in .deb to package-download handling. Other paths continue to metadata handling when they begin with dists/, or are proxied directly. parsePoolPath now parses bare filenames. Tests cover bare-filename parsing and repeated requests for two named-archive package paths. The architecture entry describes the routes and repository-scoped artifact cache keys.
git-pkgs/proxy#645: Both changes affect Debian package identity and cache behavior. PR #645 uses parsePoolPath to process repository package paths.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 7d84b
Two suites serving different packages under the same filename can receive the wrong cached package. Resolve the previously reported cache-key issue before merging.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 7d84b
Newly cached package paths can share an entry when their filenames match within one configured archive, even if their upstream contents differ. This can return the wrong package bytes to other clients. Separate repository names remain isolated, and exploitation requires a differing upstream response at a colliding path; arbitrary package injection or installation was not established.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: Suffix routing newly sends distinct non-pool paths into a cache keyed by repository, package identity and basename rather than request path. Within one configured archive, a successful fetch can therefore supply bytes for a different same-basename path without contacting that path upstream. A caller able to select a differing upstream variant can seed this shared response; malicious substitution additionally requires influence over those upstream bytes. The path-insensitive key predates the PR, but its application to these paths is new.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The identified aliasing scope is a shared Debian cache entry within one configured archive: clients requesting the same package basename through different paths can affect each other's responses. Repository-name prefixes separate main and named archives. This path does not establish cross-repository poisoning or arbitrary cache writes from request bodies.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — For a configured docker archive, requests for /docker/dists/stable/foo_1.0_amd64.deb and /docker/foo_1.0_amd64.deb now produce the same artifact identity. If one path supplies different accepted bytes and is cached first, the other can receive those bytes without an upstream fetch. The added test uses different basenames and does not exercise this collision. Actual upstream variants and malicious installation were not demonstrated.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The shared artifact pipeline checks version denylist policy before cache access, and streaming mode bypasses persistent artifact caching. These controls constrain the affected requests but do not distinguish colliding paths when persistent caching is enabled. Stored digest consistency is not an expected-content binding when Debian supplies no expected digest.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The reused pipeline retains storage-before-record publication, cleanup and retry handling, and shared-fetch lifecycle controls. Those mechanisms contain partial-fetch failures but do not resolve two URLs mapping to one cache identity.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Align Debian cache identity with the configured archive and full normalized package path, and make fetch coalescing use the same ownership identity. Define handling for legacy basename-only entries so they cannot silently satisfy newly path-scoped lookups. Authenticated expected package digests could provide an additional content binding.

Explanation
The title names the main change: package routing in the Debian handler moves from a /pool path-prefix check to a filename check. The raw summary confirms DebianHandler.Routes now selects .deb downloads by suffix, and the objectives state the same goal. The title is short, specific, and uses the conventional commit format.

Distinguish flat-layout package paths in the artifact cache.
If two suites in one archive serve different bytes under the same .deb filename, the second request can receive the first suite’s cached package. Include the path in the cache identity for flat-layout packages while preserving existing pool/ cache entries.

Thanks, switching to the .deb suffix is the right fix for Docker's dists/<suite>/pool/ layout. A few things before it can go in:
Please drop the source-package branch (isSourcePackageFile, its case in Routes, the source rows in TestDebianHandler_ClassifiesFilesByExtension, and TestDebianHandler_SourcePackageFilesAreNotCached). Source files under pool/ were already streamed before this change, because parsePoolPath can't parse a .dsc or tarball name and handlePackageDownload falls back to proxyFile. So the branch only affects source files under dists/ in non-standard layouts, and it does that with a substring heuristic. The stated reason also doesn't hold: the Debian archive doesn't allow a pool filename to change content, and keying by version and filename without a digest is equally true of the .deb files this PR caches.
With that gone, please remove the new FAQ entry in docs/architecture.md and the paragraph in docs/configuration.md about source files being replaced in place.
Root-level packages such as /debian/docker/foo_1.0_amd64.deb now reach handlePackageDownload, but parsePoolPath returns empty when the path has no /, so they're proxied uncached. Dropping the idx < 0 early return works, since path[idx+1:] already handles -1. Please add a test for it.
Smaller ones:
The routing comment calls these "flat repositories", but Debian's flat repository format means Packages and the .deb files at the archive root with no dists/. Something like "repositories such as Docker's nest the pool under dists/<suite>/" is accurate, or drop the comment.
The doc comment on TestDebianHandler_FlatArchivePackageIsCached repeats the test name; please delete it.
If the classify table stays, the udeb/ddeb rows say "not matched by debPackagePattern", but it's isDebPackageFile's suffix check that rejects them.
The new DebianHandler line in docs/architecture.md says the cache is keyed on name, version, and architecture. It's keyed on name, version, and filename, scoped by repository.

Thanks for the review - got rid of all the source stuff (sorry, I'd started down the road of looking at caching some of that and then realized it was more complicated 😅), cleaned up the docs, and fixed/added handling for a top-level .deb w/ extra test case.
I did get rid of the "classify" test entirely now. I left a case for alternate deb repo structure but lmk if you'd rather skip that or try and roll it into another test somehow.
