Detect package managers from filesystem trees - #48
Adds read-only filesystem detection for callers scanning Git trees. DetectFS selects one manager, while DetectAllFS returns one manager per ecosystem. Both report the matched manifest and lockfile without checking CLI availability.
The detector now handles wildcard manifests and file checks, keeps manifest-only defaults stable, and shares the matching logic with existing directory detection. It also fixes the Poetry definition to use the supported content-match field.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added filesystem-based package manager detection, including options to select a manager, detect across ecosystems, and identify directories affected by file changes.
Added detection support for Carthage, Dub, Elm, Haxelib, Julia, and Nix.
Added a policy for detecting managers from manifests and lockfiles, with configurable handling of conflicts.
Bug Fixes
Updated manager identification and recognized files for Go, RubyGems, NuGet, and vcpkg.
Documentation
Documented filesystem-based detection and targeted redetection.
The change adds filesystem-based manager detection APIs, optional policy-based selection, and affected-directory lookup. It updates detection metadata and adds ecosystem definitions, including detection-only definitions. It also adjusts manager identifiers and detection entries in existing definitions.
Changes: Filesystem Detection
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Detection contracts and ecosystem rules definitions/schema.go, definitions/*.yaml, detection_policy.go, README.md
Detection definitions add default-selection and ecosystem-order fields. The GitPkgs policy maps manifests and lockfiles to ecosystems and managers. Definitions add detection-only ecosystems and adjust existing detection entries.
Filesystem matching and selection detector.go
Filesystem matching evaluates manifest and lockfile patterns and file checks. Selection handles lockfile conflicts and manifest fallback.
Detection APIs and integration detector.go, detector_test.go, README.md, replace.go
DetectFS and DetectAllFS return filesystem detection results. AffectedDirectories maps changed paths to matching directories. Tests cover selection, conflicts, policy behavior, and ordering. The README documents the APIs, and npm replacement dispatch uses npmManagerName.

Merge Risk: Low · up to f5c7e
Filesystem detection can report a nonexistent manifest when a dangling symlink such as pyproject.toml is present. The impact is limited to this edge case and the change is otherwise safe to merge. Consider fixing it before or shortly after merge.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to f5c7e
Detection remains separate from command execution, but on-disk detection now reads project-controlled files without confinement or read limits. When scanning an untrusted checkout, symlinks or oversized files can expose host filesystem behavior or exhaust scanner resources. Actual production exposure depends on how callers supply the filesystem.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: Default definition-based detection now performs unbounded content reads through the supplied filesystem. Existing Detect uses os.DirFS, so a project-controlled pyproject.toml symlink can redirect those reads outside the scanned directory under the caller's filesystem privileges. A sufficiently large file or effectively unbounded readable target can exhaust scanner memory or stall detection. Checks run before manager selection, so an unrelated matching lockfile does not avoid this exposure. This is new relative to the filename-only base behavior; reachability from untrusted production inputs remains caller-dependent.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — For untrusted on-disk inputs, the relevant authority is the scanning process's readable filesystem and memory budget, not merely the project directory. A confined or link-as-data filesystem adapter can narrow that exposure. No production service, tenant count or downstream deployment exposure is established by the supplied evidence.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — An attacker able to supply checkout entries can place a large pyproject.toml or a symlink at that name. With embedded Python definitions and default definition-based detection, the matcher reads the resolved target before selection. This can consume excessive resources or let out-of-project content and read errors affect detection. Results do not return file contents, so direct content exfiltration is not demonstrated.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The new filesystem APIs preserve a metadata-only boundary to command execution. The policy path avoids content inspection, while filesystem authority otherwise comes from the supplied fs.FS. Existing Detect supplies os.DirFS internally rather than a symlink-confined filesystem.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The scoped symlink tests exercise dangling targets, and the matcher handles missing targets by skipping them. Those cases do not establish confinement for resolving symlinks or resource containment for successful reads.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Define the on-disk trust contract explicitly. For untrusted checkouts, use race-resistant confined filesystem access or reject symlink and special-file inputs, and bound content-check reads and work. Preserve metadata-only detection without granting command-execution authority.

Exclude dangling symlinks from manifest matches.
A dangling pyproject.toml still matches here. After the new content-read handling skips its error, DetectFS can select uv and report that nonexistent manifest. The uv definition marks it as the default manifest. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Check matched entries before returning them. Skip missing targets and propagate other errors.
Based on learnings, distinguish nonexistent files from permission and I/O errors.

Update the match-collection flow in DetectFS to verify each matched entry’s
target exists before appending its name, so dangling symlinks are excluded. Skip
only not-exist errors and propagate permission or I/O errors through the
existing error path; use the filesystem abstraction already used by DetectFS.
