RetrOS 🖥️

Your new tab is now a Windows 95 desktop.

(demo recorded automatically by a scripted demo-reel scenario)

A full retro desktop environment in a browser tab: draggable, minimizable windows with a real taskbar and z-ordering, a Start menu, desktop icons that remember where you left them, a boot screen, a screensaver, CRT scanlines, and a Recycle Bin that actually restores what you deleted.

Built-in apps: Minesweeper, Solitaire, Snake, Paint, Notepad, Calculator, Terminal, Blocks, sticky notes, search, a browser window, and RetroTunes — a music player that synthesizes chiptune melodies with the Web Audio API instead of shipping audio files.

The part worth reading the source for

~1,400 lines of vanilla JS, no framework, no build step, and exactly one permission (storage). No background script, no content scripts, no network calls — the entire OS is the new-tab page. The window manager (draggable windows, z-order, session restore with re-entrancy guards) is hand-rolled.

Install (unpacked)

1. chrome://extensions → enable Developer mode
2. Load unpacked → select this folder
3. Open a new tab. Welcome back to 1995.
