virtualkeyboard

virtualkeyboard is script for on-screen keyboard for touch typing learning

Requirements

Script depends on autohotkey depricated version 1.1 (1.1.37.02): https://github.com/AutoHotkey/AutoHotkey

Purpose

Touch typing is significantly more efficient than the visual "hunt-and-peck" method, where the gaze constantly shifts between the keyboard and the screen. This not only reduces typing speed but also increases eye strain, and frequent attention switches create cumulative stress throughout the day.

Today, there are many proven methods for teaching touch typing, used in courses around the world. The tools include online platforms, training programs, and similar resources.

Most approaches rely on repetitive practice of identical movements to build so-called "muscle memory" (motor learning). Learners are given exercises that involve typing repeated letter combinations in various patterns. The main drawback of this method is that, in the early stages, it is difficult to combine with regular computer work — reverting to the familiar visual typing disrupts the newly formed skill.

High speed is an undeniable advantage of mechanical training and is critical for professions such as secretary or stenographer. However, for most occupations where text is preceded by careful thought and formulation of ideas, typing speed is not the decisive factor.

As an alternative, there is a different approach that avoids routine and does not require stepping away from daily tasks. It does not guarantee record-breaking speed but allows the skill to develop without monotonous exercises, through several stages of gradual improvement. This method requires a specific application: it displays a virtual keyboard on top of all windows, highlighting the keys that are actually pressed on the physical keyboard. In this way, the habit of looking at the physical keyboard is gradually replaced by monitoring through the on-screen visual aid.

Code modification options

Initially script was made for en/rus layouts, but it is quite simple to adapt it for another pair of layouts
