Summary

  • Split panes per tab: side-by-side (D) or stacked (Shift+D) with the menu modifier, click or [ / ] to focus, W closes the pane (or the tab when only one remains). Binary split-tree model with per-tab layout persistence; pre-split state.json files load as single-pane tabs.
  • Selection highlight is painted only by the pane that owns it (previously mirrored into every pane).
  • All keyboard shortcuts work on Windows via Ctrl (new tab/split/close/copy/paste/font), Ctrl+C copies with a selection and sends SIGINT otherwise; AltGr combos no longer fire shortcuts or leak control codes; Settings shows Ctrl+... hints off macOS.
  • CI: Windows leg runs on the warm self-hosted vterm-win runner (fork PRs skip that leg, macOS hosted coverage still applies); actions/checkout/cache bumped v4 to v5.

Verification

  • cargo fmt --check clean
  • cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings clean
  • cargo test --workspace: 38 passed, 0 failed (4 new split-tree/state tests, 2 new shortcut-modifier/text-field tests)

Notes for review

  • Manual QA worth doing: split mixed orientations, resize the window (each PTY reflows), quit + relaunch (layout + cwd restore), select/copy per pane.
  • The self-hosted CI leg needs the runner online with the vterm-win label; until then that leg will stay queued.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added split-pane terminal layouts with side-by-side and stacked arrangements.
    • Added shortcuts to split panes, switch focus, and close panes or tabs.
    • Added persistent pane layouts and backward-compatible workspace loading.
    • Enabled Windows Ctrl-based shortcuts, including proper AltGr handling.
    • Added platform-appropriate shortcut hints in Terminal settings.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Ctrl+C now sends an interrupt when no text is selected.
    • Terminal tabs and drag previews now display the terminal’s display name.

Walkthrough

The workspace now supports persistent split panes with side-by-side or stacked layouts, pane focus, pane-local input, and pane closing. Non-macOS shortcuts now use Ctrl without treating AltGr as a shortcut. CI uses a self-hosted Windows runner.

Changes

Split-pane workspace

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pane state and persistence
crates/workspace/src/state.rs
Tabs now store pane data and split trees. State loading supports legacy single-pane data. Split, close, normalization, and allocation tests were added.
Workspace pane lifecycle
crates/workspace/src/workspace.rs
Workspace runtime data now mirrors persisted panes. Pane terminals can be created, focused, cycled, split, closed, and persisted.
Split-pane rendering
crates/workspace/src/components/terminal.rs
Terminal rendering now lays out split trees and attaches pane-local mouse handling. Selection renders only in the focused pane.
Platform shortcut surface
crates/ui/src/lib.rs, crates/ui/src/text_input.rs, crates/workspace/src/components/settings.rs, crates/workspace/src/components/tab_bar.rs, crates/workspace/src/workspace.rs
Shortcut handling supports non-macOS Ctrl input and excludes Ctrl+Alt combinations. Settings show platform-aware shortcuts and pane actions. Tab labels use display names.

CI runner updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Build matrix configuration
.github/workflows/ci.yml
The build-and-test job uses macOS and a self-hosted Windows runner. Fork pull requests skip the Windows leg. Checkout and cache actions use version 5.

Continuous integration cannot run for this change because the workflow file is invalid, so nothing is being verified automatically. In the app itself, saved split layouts are rebuilt rather than restored, scrolling can affect the wrong pane, and clicking in the terminal now writes settings to disk on every press. These should be addressed before merging.

Inline comments:
In @.github/workflows/ci.yml:
- Line 17: Remove the matrix.os reference from the job-level if condition in the
workflow. Restructure the workflow so OS-specific eligibility is handled through
separate macOS and Windows jobs or a prior job that outputs the eligible matrix,
while preserving the intended platform filtering.
- Line 35: Update both workflow action references, actions/checkout and
actions/cache, to immutable commit SHAs while retaining comments identifying
them as v5; do not leave either action referenced by the mutable v5 tag.

In `@crates/workspace/src/components/terminal.rs`:
- Line 614: Update the terminal scroll event wiring and Workspace scroll handler
to accept pane_idx, resolving the target entity from
self.terminals[ws][tab].entities at that index instead of active_term_entity();
preserve existing scrolling behavior while ensuring the pane under the cursor is
scrolled.
- Line 392: Update the terminal lookup around ws.active_term to use safe access
on ws.terminals instead of computing len() - 1 and indexing directly. Ensure an
empty or mismatched ws.terminals produces empty_pane() through the existing
fallback, while preserving the current selection behavior for valid indices.

In `@crates/workspace/src/state.rs`:
- Line 173: Update normalize so it rebuilds self.root with build_balanced only
when the existing tree is invalid; preserve valid tree structure, orientations,
and ratios. Adjust close_pane to rely on remove_leaf and renumber_tree output
without invoking a full normalization rebuild.

In `@crates/workspace/src/workspace.rs`:
- Line 1326: Update focus_pane to return immediately when the requested pane is
already focused, before calling self.state.save().ok(). Preserve persistence
when focus actually changes, leaving snapshot_session and explicit actions
responsible for other state saves.
- Around line 1049-1053: Update the split-direction selection in the keystroke
handling arm to use the key value, treating both “d” and “D” as the stacked
split signal, rather than relying only on modifiers.shift; preserve the
side-by-side direction for the other shortcut case.
- Around line 1400-1408: In Workspace::close_pane, call TabData::close_pane and
return immediately if it rejects the request before shutting down or removing
tab.entities[pane_idx]. Only remove the runtime entity after the persisted pane
closes successfully, preserving the entities and panes count invariant.
