Lazy load site images, with the page's first image loaded eagerly - #673
Pages with many galleries downloaded every image on load, even far below the fold. Now images load as visitors scroll near them. The first image a visitor sees is loaded eagerly with fetchpriority="high", so it shows as fast as before, or slightly faster.
Results on a local site
/news/ (51 galleries, 103 images): 13 images on page load instead of 103.
37-image slideshow: 2 images on page load (the current and next slide).
Messy grid view with 158 thumbnails: 69 on page load, and the masonry layout is identical.
Largest image shown (20 Mbps, 40 ms latency, median of 5 loads):

What changes
Galleries: every gallery type renders loading="lazy", including the images column, pile and row galleries build in JS (loading is set before src, or the browser starts the download anyway).
Fade slideshows: slides overlap, so the browser would see them all as visible. Images of slides other than the current, previous and next one are display: none until their slide is next to the current one. They are hidden only after the 0.3s fade (transition: display … allow-discrete). Jumping far with the numbered navigation shows the target slide empty until its image loads.
Link galleries: the hover image lies hidden over the first one (visibility) instead of display: none, so it loads together with the first image instead of on hover. In responsive layouts a taller hover image now overlaps the content below rather than pushing it down.
First image:SectionTemplateRenderService::getEntries() gives loadFirstImageEagerly to the first entry whose gallery starts with an image, and its template renders fetchpriority="high" instead. Portfolio sections are skipped, because their entries are hidden until a thumbnail is clicked. Row and pile also pass the flag to their mobile fallback slideshow; both use the same file. The first mashup picture and the first portfolio thumbnail are eager too.
Messy grid view: the masonry measures box heights before lazy images load, so GridViewRenderService reads each _grid_ image's size with getimagesize (about 12 ms per 200 files). An image without a known size stays eager.
Portfolio thumbnails: they get width/height, plus height: auto in CSS so narrow columns don't squash them.
Banners are lazy. The site header logo and the messy background gallery are unchanged: the background already loads one image at a time.
Videos get preload="metadata". Chrome downloads about the same either way. In Safari 27 it cuts the preload from about 33 MB to 0.3 MB per 20 seconds, but a video without a poster shows an empty box until played. The #t=0.001 first-frame workaround brings back the full preload, so it isn't used.
Editor: thumbnails in the Media panel and the gallery editors are lazy. Opening the news media panel loads 29 of 103 thumbnails. The editor preview renders every image lazy, because it never passes the eager flag.
Testing
Pest: gallery templates (link, slideshow, grid, column, pile, row), grid view, portfolio thumbnails, mashup entries and banners. 23 tests, run file by file. The full suite currently clashes over makeUser() with an AiAssistant plugin checkout on another branch.
Editor: ng test passes all 197 tests.
Browser:
headless Chrome on a local Berta site, mashup and messy templates, desktop and a 390px phone viewport;
every gallery type, the editor preview and the media panel;
…up pictures, the messy grid view and editor thumbnails, with the page's first image loaded eagerly
- Every gallery type renders `loading="lazy"` images, including the images column, pile and row galleries build in JS (`loading` is set before `src`). Gallery videos get `preload="metadata"`.
- The page's first gallery image, the first mashup picture and the first portfolio thumbnail get `fetchpriority="high"` instead. `SectionTemplateRenderService::getEntries()` passes `loadFirstImageEagerly` to the first entry whose gallery starts with an image; portfolio entries are hidden, so they get none. Row and pile pass it to their mobile fallback slideshow.
- Fade slideshows: slides overlap, so images of slides other than the current, previous and next one are `display: none` until their slide is next to the current one, and are hidden only after the 0.3s fade.
- Link galleries: the hover image lies hidden over the first one (`visibility`) instead of `display: none`, so it loads together with the first image.
- Messy grid view: the masonry measures the boxes before lazy images load, so the `_grid_` image size is read from the file; images without a known size stay eager.
- Portfolio thumbnails get their `width`/`height` and `height: auto`. The slideshow re-measures on `loadedmetadata`.
- Editor: the media panel and gallery editor thumbnails are lazy.
- Tests: gallery templates, grid view, portfolio thumbnails, mashup entries and banners.

Walkthrough
The change adds lazy loading for gallery, grid, banner, and editor images. It marks selected first images for high fetch priority, adds image dimensions to grid and portfolio thumbnails, and sets gallery videos to preload metadata.
Render services pass an optional eager-loading flag. Section, mashup, and portfolio rendering mark the first eligible image for high fetch priority. Portfolio thumbnails include dimensions.
Gallery image and video markup _api_app/app/Sites/Sections/Entries/Galleries/*.twig, _api_app/app/Sites/Sections/Entries/mashupEntries.twig, editor/src/app/render/twig-templates.ts, _api_app/tests/Feature/Gallery*TemplateTest.php, _api_app/tests/Feature/MashupEntriesTemplateTest.php
Gallery and mashup templates lazy-load images by default, assign high fetch priority to flagged first images, and preload video metadata. Tests check the rendered attributes.
Gallery runtime media handling engine/js/BertaGallery*.js, engine/_lib/berta/swiper.css, engine/_lib/berta/default.css
Gallery runtime code lazy-loads images and preloads video metadata. Slideshow CSS controls lazy-image visibility, and the video update listener waits for metadata.

Explanation
The title "Lazy load site images, with the page's first image loaded eagerly" matches the main change in the changeset. The PR adds lazy loading to gallery, banner, portfolio, mashup, grid, and editor images. It also sets the first eligible page image to load eagerly with fetchpriority high. The title names both parts of the change and does not claim anything outside the diff.

Select the first visible image after a video.
If a grid or row starts with a video followed by an image, this check skips the gallery. The template then lazy-loads its visible image and may prioritize an image in a later entry instead. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Select the first eligible rendered image and pass its position to the template. Add a regression test for a video-first grid or row.

Register the metadata handler before Swiper initialization.
Because the videos use preload="metadata", loadedmetadata can fire before the init callback registers the listener. Update after initialization when video.readyState >= HTMLMediaElement.HAVE_METADATA.
