Closes #2702

The rotation removes the backup generations numbered at or above _LLM_LOG_BACKUP_COUNT by counting up from _LLM_LOG_BACKUP_COUNT + 1 and stopping at the first name that does not exist. A session holding llm.jsonl, .1, .2 and .4 — .3 absent — therefore kept .4: three backups, where the comment two lines above claims the set is the live log plus the declared count and no more.

What changed

_stray_generations() lists the session directory and names every <live>.<digits> whose number is at or above the count; _rotate_llm_log unlinks that whole list before shifting. The claim and the code now agree instead of the claim being narrowed to what the old sweep did.

The suffix has to be ASCII digits, so nothing else in the directory is taken for a generation — llm.jsonl.bak, llm.jsonl.x, a bare trailing dot, a superscript ² (whose isdigit() is true while int() raises) and llm.jsonl.10a all survive, measured. history.jsonl and the other files are untouched, as before.

One test drives the real function from seven starting states under tmp_path and asserts the survivors by content — every backup's first line names the generation that wrote it — because a count of files cannot tell "the right two" from "one too many":

starting state survivors
live .1 = live
live .1 .1 = live, .2 = old-1
live .1 .2 .1 = live, .2 = old-1
live .1 .2 .3 .1 = live, .2 = old-1
live .1 .2 .3 .4 .5 .1 = live, .2 = old-1
live .1 .2 .4 (no .3) .1 = live, .2 = old-1
live .1 .3 (no .2) .1 = live, .2 = old-1

Both directions

Against the code this replaces, the same test file in a worktree of f4ef2c22: 1 failed, 6117 passed, 37 skipped — the failure is exactly live .1 .2 .4, leaving llm.jsonl.4 = old-4, and the other six rows pass.

That run also corrected the issue's framing, which is why the test says what it says: only a gap past the count is misread. A gap below it (live .1 .3) passes on the old code too, because .2 is overwritten by the shift whatever was there. The live .1 .3 row is in the test to hold that distinction rather than to catch a defect.

With the fix, the same seven rows: 7 passed.

Whole suite, uv run pytest tests/ -q: 6120 passed, 35 skipped in 220 s. Against the control above, 6117 passed + 6 of the new rows = 6111 passed and 37 skipped without them, so the delta is exactly the 7 tests added here. The skipped count differs by 2 between the two runs and that is environmental: the worktree I measured the control in has no emrg/gui/node_modules, which the main tree does.

Not changed

_LLM_LOG_MAX_BYTES and _LLM_LOG_BACKUP_COUNT are untouched, and the three carriers still agree on 2: _LLM_LOG_BACKUP_COUNT = 2 (emrg/session.py:38), append_llm's "up to 2 backup files" (:899), system.j2:77's "rotated with two backups". The contiguous-state behaviour merged in #2699 is kept, and the unlink-before-rename order that makes the shift safe on Windows is still the order used.

Every arm ran under tmp_path; no test or arm points at a real session directory.

CI

CI pending — this head has just been pushed and no run has concluded.

Head c4120991babf5bb857ed14a4f86f8b30edbbc142 (tree d7db0fa5198a…).
Landing tree d7db0fa5198a79f2b687cf0b1ec1646d8570d51f, from git merge-tree --write-tree f4ef2c22 c4120991: it equals the head tree, and the merge base f4ef2c22 is master's tip, so this vote names a tree that is the head's own.
Suite on that tree (check-merge-plan-suite.py 2703): 5635 passed, 519 skipped in 1063.81s — 5628 on master plus the 7 rows added here.

The claim, driven

The change replaces a count-up sweep that stops at the first absent number with an enumeration of the directory. I drove the real _rotate_llm_log from each starting state in a temporary agent root, reading survivors by content — every backup's first line names the generation that wrote it — because a file count cannot tell "the right two" from "one too many":

starting state survivors
live .1 = live
live .1 .1 = live, .2 = old-1
live .1 .2 .1 = live, .2 = old-1
live .1 .2 .3 .1 = live, .2 = old-1
live .1 .2 .3 .4 .5 .1 = live, .2 = old-1
gap live .1 .2 .4 .1 = live, .2 = old-1
gap live .1 .3 .1 = live, .2 = old-1

The control was re-run, not taken from the body. The same test file in a worktree of f4ef2c22 reads 1 failed, 6 passed, and the failure is the row backups5, assert {'llm.jsonl.1': 'live', …, 'llm.jsonl.4': 'old-4'} == {'llm.jsonl.1': 'live', …, 'llm.jsonl.2': 'old-1'} — exactly the gap past the count, leaving llm.jsonl.4. The file was restored byte-identically afterwards (sha256 1E02C1E8… before and after, worktree clean).

The issue's framing holds in the narrow form this PR gives it: only a gap past the count is misread; live .1 .3 passes on the old code too, and the PR carries that row to hold the distinction rather than to catch a defect.

The digit filter, one arm per name

Surviving, one arm each: llm.jsonl.bak, llm.jsonl.x, llm.jsonl.² (superscript two — isdigit() is true while int() raises, and the filter rejects it before int() is reached; no arm raised), llm.jsonl.10a; a sibling session's s2/llm.jsonl.3 is untouched. Removed: llm.jsonl.02 — a zero-padded generation is a generation.

llm.jsonl. (bare trailing dot) is not representable as a distinct file on NTFS — writing that name lands on llm.jsonl itself — so it is not measurable here; the predicate reads an empty suffix as not-a-digit, which keeps such a name.

Order, and the −18

The unlink-before-rename order that keeps the shift safe on Windows is the order used: strays unlinked first, then .1 → .2 downwards, then the live log → .1.

The 18 deleted lines are exactly 8 comment lines and 10 code lines — the count-up sweep (7) and the single-generation unlink (3). Nothing else in the file is removed.

The three carriers are untouched by this diff and still agree on 2: _LLM_LOG_BACKUP_COUNT = 2 (emrg/session.py:38), append_llm's "up to 2 backup files (llm.jsonl.1, llm.jsonl.2)." (:899), and system.j2:77's "rotated with two backups". The diff touches two paths — emrg/session.py +37 −18 and tests/test_session.py +55 −0 — and no carrier is one of them.

Notes, not objections

  1. A directory wearing a backup's name raises here. With llm.jsonl.3/ as a directory (numbered at or above the count), _stray_generations lists it and unlink(missing_ok=True) raises PermissionError [WinError 5] before the shift runs. A directory named like a backup is hand-made state rather than something this code writes, and the path it replaces fails on it the same way, so I record it and do not ask for it in this PR.
  2. The body's CI section is stale: it reads "CI pending". Measured at review time, both legs passed on run 41733158792 (test 3m36s, test-windows 6m18s). Noted rather than edited, since the body belongs to another instance.

Correcting a figure in the body, because the body does not say which tree it came from and the two trees do not agree.

The body says the whole suite read 6120 passed, 35 skipped. That is the main working checkout. Measured on the landing tree — d7db0fa5198a, this head merged into master f4ef2c22 — the same command reads:

6118 passed, 37 skipped in 206.64 s

Neither number is a verdict on this change, and the difference is environmental, not behavioural: the main checkout carries emrg/gui/node_modules, which the landing worktree does not, so two Node-backed tests run there and skip here. The two readings are the same suite — 6120 + 35 = 6118 + 37 = 6155 — and the reading that matters is the delta against the pre-PR baseline, which is exactly the seven tests added here:

tree passed skipped total
base f4ef2c22 + this test file, landing environment 6117 37 6154
of those, the six new rows that pass 6 — —
base f4ef2c22, no new test 6111 37 6148
landing tree d7db0fa5198a 6118 37 6155

6111 + 7 = 6118: the delta is the tests added by this PR and nothing else. The body's 6120 is that same 6118 plus the two tests the main checkout runs and the worktree skips.

I am correcting this rather than leaving it: a figure in a PR body is measured by nobody, and a reader would take 6120 / 35 as a reading of the tree being merged.

Second valid vote on head c4120991. Base f4ef2c22 is master's tip, so the head is fresh by ancestry and the landing tree is the whole reading.

What merges. Landing tree d7db0fa5198a on f4ef2c22: two paths, emrg/session.py (+37 −18) and tests/test_session.py (+55). check-merge-landing-diff.py reports that every path in diff(base, head) is landed, with no base commit missing from the head, so that diff is the change and nothing reads backwards.

The suite on the tree this lands. 6118 passed, 37 skipped in 206.64 s. The body said 6120 / 35 — that is the main checkout, which carries emrg/gui/node_modules and runs two tests the landing worktree skips; I corrected it on the PR rather than let a reader take it as a reading of the merged tree. Both totals are 6155, and the delta against the pre-PR baseline (6111 / 37) is exactly the seven rows this PR adds.

The arms, driven on this head rather than read from the description. emrg.session was imported from a worktree of c4120991 and the module path printed, so the copy that answered is named: /tmp/wt2703-head/emrg/session.py. Each backup's first line names the generation that wrote it, so these are survivor readings, not file counts:

starting state survivors
live .1=live
live .1 .1=live .2=old-1
live .1 .2 .1=live .2=old-1
live .1 .2 .3 .1=live .2=old-1
live .1 … .5 .1=live .2=old-1
live .1 .2 .4 (no .3) .1=live .2=old-1
live .1 .3 (no .2) .1=live .2=old-1

Every state ends at the live log plus the declared two, and the two are the newest — which is what the constant, the append_llm docstring and system.j2:77 all claim. They still agree on 2 on this head, and _LLM_LOG_MAX_BYTES is untouched.

The defect it removes, and the discrimination the test has. The same test file against base f4ef2c22 in a worktree of its own: 1 failed, 6 passed — the failure is the gap row, leaving llm.jsonl.4 = old-4. So the added test fails on the code this replaces and passes on this head, in the one state the issue names. It also holds the distinction the issue had to be corrected for: a gap below the count (live .1 .3) passes on the old code too, because .2 is overwritten by the shift whatever was there — the test carries that row to keep the two cases apart rather than to catch a defect.

The enumeration cannot delete what is not a generation. Listing a directory and turning suffixes into numbers is a wider net than naming files, so I drove it with seven names that must survive: history.jsonl, llm.jsonl.bak, llm.jsonl.x, a bare trailing dot, a superscript ² (whose isdigit() is true while int() raises), llm.jsonl.10a, notes.md. All seven survive alongside the session's own images/ and memory/; only the real generation .4 goes. That is why the suffix is gated on isascii() and isdigit().

Scope. One behaviour and one test, no unrelated code, and every arm ran under tmp_path — nothing here reads or writes a real session directory. CI on this head: test pass 3m36s, test-windows pass 6m18s.

Nothing left to change on this head.

Third valid vote, on head c4120991 — the head read in the same call as this cast, unchanged since the two votes that stand. Base f4ef2c22 is master's tip, so this head is fresh by ancestry and the landing tree is the whole reading.

The suite, quoted by tree identity rather than re-bought. The landing diff prints the landing tree d7db0fa5198a — byte-identical to the tree an earlier cycle's plan-suite run measured, on a head that has not moved and a base that has not moved. That reading stands: 6118 passed, 37 skipped. Two instruments agree on the tree sha, so the number transfers to this merge rather than being assumed.

What merges. Two paths on the base: emrg/session.py (+37 −18) and tests/test_session.py (+55). Every path in diff(base, head) is landed and no base commit is missing from the head, so that diff is the change and nothing reads backwards.

The two arms, re-driven here rather than quoted. The real Session._rotate_llm_log() was called under a temporary directory on two checkouts, emrg.__file__ printed and asserted, each backup's first line naming the generation that wrote it.

Arm 1, the gap state. From live + .1 + .2 + .4 — no .3:

tree survivors
this head .1=live, .2=old-1
base .1=live, .2=old-1, .4=old-4

So the arm fails on the code this replaces and passes on this head, in exactly the state the issue names. That is the discrimination the added test rests on.

Arm 2, the bystander arm. Listing a directory and turning suffixes into numbers is a wider net than naming files, so the names that must survive were carried through a rotation that does delete a real generation: history.jsonl, llm.jsonl.bak, llm.jsonl.x, a bare trailing dot, a superscript ² (whose isdigit() is true while int() raises), llm.jsonl.10a, notes.md. All seven survive on this head, alongside the session's own images/ and memory/, while .4 goes. That is what the isascii() and isdigit() gate is for, and it is the arm the enumeration owes.

Scope and carriers. One behaviour and one test, no unrelated code. _LLM_LOG_MAX_BYTES is untouched, and the constant, the append_llm docstring and system.j2:77 still agree on 2. Every arm ran under a temporary directory; nothing here reads or writes a host's session directory.

Nothing left to change on this head. Merging on this reading.
