Summary

The experimental MySQL proxy currently accepts arbitrary credentials and listens on all network interfaces. This change requires configured credentials and defaults the listener to 127.0.0.1.

The proxy now:

  • Verifies credentials before running any SQL, including the initial database selection.
  • Authenticates with caching_sha2_password by default. Older clients can use mysql_native_password when the account is configured for it, and a client that picks another method is switched to the account's method, as MySQL does.
  • Closes rejected connections, discards queued commands, and excludes client requests and response data from debug logs.
  • Accepts an explicit IPv4 or IPv6 bind address through the CLI or PHP API.
  • Reads CLI passwords from WP_MYSQL_PROXY_PASSWORD or a password file, with strict argument validation.

It also limits what a single client can do, following MySQL's defaults:

  • Refuses login packets over 16 KB, closes connections that don't log in within 10 seconds or stay idle for 8 hours, and allows at most 151 open connections.
  • Joins packets that a client splits and caps a message at 16 MB, instead of running a truncated query.
  • Closes the connection on COM_QUIT, refuses empty command packets, and keeps internal error details out of client errors.
  • Quotes the database name in COM_INIT_DB and reports an unknown database there as error 1049.

Regression coverage checks malformed and fragmented logins, replay attempts, queued commands, credential logging, and connections through the MySQL CLI, PDO, and MySQLi. CI runs the proxy suite on PHP 7.2 and 8.5.

Compatibility

Existing callers must supply credentials. PHP callers must configure username and password; CLI callers must supply --user and a password source. Direct MySQL_Session callers must also pass a MySQL_Authentication instance. Callers that need a network listener must explicitly set its bind address.

PDO and MySQLi on PHP below 7.4.4 can't use caching_sha2_password. For those clients, set the account's plugin with --auth-plugin=mysql_native_password or the auth_plugin option.

The CLI port option is now -P, as in MySQL clients. -p is no longer accepted.

TLS remains unsupported. Authentication does not encrypt queries or results; remote connections need a protected transport such as an SSH tunnel.

📝 Walkthrough

The MySQL proxy now requires credentials and supports configurable authentication plugins and IPv4 or IPv6 listener addresses. It validates authentication and protocol messages, applies connection and timeout limits, and updates session command handling. The pull request adds tests and supporting configuration for these changes.

The proxy now requires credentials and listens only on loopback by default. This is a clear security improvement. One caveat remains. If an operator exposes the proxy on a network address, nothing slows repeated password guesses. That deployment therefore relies on a strong password or a firewall. The change is reasonable to merge with that caveat noted or documented.

Verify challenge responses against a configured account. An account uses one
authentication plugin, caching_sha2_password by default, with mysql_native_password
available for clients that need it. Reject failed or malformed logins before
selecting a database, discard queued commands, and close the connection.

Require CLI credentials through a password file or environment variable. Keep
client requests and response data out of debug logs, and cover authentication,
startup, and client behavior with regression tests.

Reject a packet larger than 16 KB while the client is unauthenticated, so
a partial login packet cannot make the session buffer up to 16 MB.

Close a connection that has not completed a login within 10 seconds, which
matches the default MySQL connect_timeout. Without it, idle connections held
the proxy's file descriptors indefinitely.
The command built "USE <name>" from the client's bytes, so a name was parsed
as SQL instead of an identifier. Reuse the quoting that the login path already
applies, so a name with a backtick, a space, or a semicolon stays a name.
The port was -p, which every MySQL client reads as the password. Someone
pasting "-psecret" set the port instead. The port is now -P, and -p is an
unknown option, so a password passed that way is rejected, not misread.
The session kept serving after a quit, so a client that never closed the socket
held it open forever. MySQL closes the connection itself.

Track why a session closes, so a quit is logged as a quit while a failed login
still stands out as an error.
A payload of exactly 16 MB - 1 means the message continues in the next packet.
Each packet was treated as a whole message, so a larger query was cut at that
boundary and its prefix was run on its own.

Cap an assembled message at 16 MB and answer MySQL's 1153 past it, so joining
packets cannot let one connection buffer without limit.
Reading the command byte of an empty packet raised a PHP warning per packet, and
a deprecation on PHP 8.5, so a client could flood the log with them. Answer
MySQL's 1835 and close the connection instead.
The OK packet builder requires an int, so a result built without an insert ID
raised a TypeError that reached the client as an unknown error.
PHP type errors carry the absolute path of the calling file, so the server's
layout could reach any authenticated client. Answer a plain 1105 and log the
detail instead.
Refuse a connection past 151 open ones with MySQL's 1040 error, so the proxy
keeps serving instead of running out of file descriptors. 151 is MySQL's own
max_connections default.
COM_INIT_DB passed the adapter's error to the client, so selecting a missing
database returned 1105 with the adapter's message, while the login returned
MySQL's 1049 for the same name.

Select the database the same way in both places, so both answer 1049 and the
adapter's details stay in the log. Unlike the login, a failed COM_INIT_DB keeps
the connection open.
The login timeout only covered clients that had not logged in yet, so a
logged-in client could stay connected without sending anything and keep one of
the connection slots forever.

Give every connection a single deadline: LOGIN_TIMEOUT until it logs in, then
IDLE_TIMEOUT after each request. The idle limit matches MySQL's wait_timeout
default of 8 hours. Data from a client that has not logged in does not extend
its login deadline.

Consider throttling failed logins when the listener is not on loopback.

verify() returns at once, and reject_authentication() closes the connection with no delay. A client can reconnect and try another password right away. The only limits are MAX_CONNECTIONS and LOGIN_TIMEOUT, and neither slows repeated attempts. The default 127.0.0.1 listener reduces this risk. The documented --bind-address=0.0.0.0 and :: options remove that protection.

The proxy is single-threaded, so a blocking sleep() in the session would stall every client. Use one of these options instead:

  • Record failed attempts per peer address in MySQL_Proxy. Hold rejected sockets until a short deadline before closing them. Refuse new connections from a peer address that exceeds a failure threshold.
  • At minimum, state in the README that a network-exposed proxy has no brute-force protection and needs a strong password or a firewall.

Based on learnings: "Flag password-check code paths that have no rate-limiting, delay, or lockout mechanism as a security gap."
