RTK as a course: a Learn tab, 56 units, five frames at a time - #31
Conversation
A Duolingo-shaped path through Remembering the Kanji: 56 units, five frames at a time, one Continue button. The plan's first job is the inventory — 3,000 Heisig frames with keywords and lessons, 6,644 ordered primitive edges, 249,260 ranked visual confusables, 6,702 stroke-path kanji, 81,036 keyword synonyms, kanji SRS cards on FSRS, a mnemonic card face, and per-item telemetry are all already shipped, so the course is the delta and not the whole problem. Three pieces are built and have no caller: the /api/kanji/mnemonic route, its typed client requestKanjiMnemonic, and getKanjiByLessonAsync. The course adopts them. Settled: the user chooses Write or Generate per frame and nothing is generated before it is asked for; a generated story lands in the same editor, editable; the course introduces and FSRS retains; no hearts; the entry point is a Learn tab of its own, because the course reads no list. One table, course_progress, one row per node of a path: `unit` is the RTK lesson, `node` its 0-based five-frame slice, `crown` 0..3. The id is derived from (course, unit, node) so two devices touching one node converge on one row instead of two, and the index on updated_at is named `_updated` because isRemoteRelevant ships only those — without it the table would never delta-sync. The spine itself is pure (lib/rtk-course.ts): node ids, node boundaries, which exercises a crown level runs, and the primitive gate. Measured rather than assumed: of the 3,000 keyworded frames only 2,200 carry a heisig_lesson, and those run contiguously to frame 2,200, so `lesson` is nullable and unitsFromFrames drops the 800 volume-3 frames rather than invent a unit for them. The path is 56 units, 2,200 frames, 461 nodes, and the test pins that against the dictionary's real per-lesson counts, not a uniform fixture. A new user table has to join four enumerations or it is quietly lost: sync's MUTABLE_TABLES, the delete categories, and all three table lists in lib/data-backup.ts. hasLocalData counts a course row only once a crown is earned, because merely opening a node writes one and that must not make a first sign-in ask about merging. check-safe-inserts.sh now reads a whole SQL statement rather than two lines, so a readable multi-line upsert is not a false positive, and it scans db/rtk-progress.ts — without the new glob its pass over this change was vacuous. eslint ignores .cache/, gitignored scratch that was producing 25 errors. Gates: typecheck, lint (0 errors), 85 tests across the course, sync, backup and user-db suites, check-safe-inserts. Prove-failed three ways: NODE_SIZE=6 (4 boundary tests fail), the migration absent (13 fail on "no such table"), the remote index renamed off `_updated` (1 fails), and the upsert's ON CONFLICT removed (the insert gate fails). The course is not a deck, so it does not live under Lists. It gets the fifth
tab, and that tab's root screen IS the path: 56 lessons, a dot per node shaded
by its crown, and one Continue that resolves to the first node still under the
cap. Nothing is configured, nothing is added to a list, and no list is read
anywhere in the course.
Giving lib/navigation.ts a /learn branch obliges the stack to carry the four
shared detail routes the other tabs have — useTabRouter pushes
`${prefix}/kanji/...`, so without them a tap from a learn screen dead-ends.
app/import-article.tsx's hardcoded tab tree gains learn too; TabRouter remaps by
route name, which is why that reset still landed on Reader, and the comment
claiming index 2 was the reader tab is now true again at 3.
db/rtk-frames.ts holds the course's dictionary reads, each filtering
heisig_lesson IS NOT NULL. The path counts units with a GROUP BY rather than
materialising 2,200 rows, memoised per database — the mini and full
dictionaries agree on the shape, so an upgrade cannot stale it.
The screen holds no arithmetic: pathSummary() returns the dots, the totals and
the next node, which is why 2,200 frames of behaviour are covered without a
render test. unitsFromFrames, PATH_FRAME_COUNT, PATH_UNIT_COUNT and
unitCrownTotal went with it — all dead once rtk-frames.ts existed.
A node is recorded as seen only once its frames are known to exist, so
/learn/node?unit=1&node=99 cannot leave a synced progress row behind for a node
the course does not have.
lib/rtk-session.ts is the pure queue the runner will drive next phase: meet all
five frames, then test every frame once before any twice, and bring a miss back
two items later rather than at once.
Gates: typecheck, lint (0 errors), 71 tests — including db/rtk-frames.test.ts
against the real assets/dictionary.db, pinning 56 units / 461 nodes and
一二三四五 as node rtk:1:0. Prove-failed by inverting nextNode's crown
comparison (7 failed) and by dropping the heisig_lesson filter (1 failed).

The Meet step is the course's first real screen: a frame's kanji, its primitives, its keyword — and then a choice. Write it, Generate, or Skip. Nothing is generated before it is asked for, and a generated story lands in the same MnemonicEditor a written one does, so tweaking is editing and there is one surface to learn. Saving runs through useKanjiMnemonic, which already keeps the personal primitive-association index in step. MnemonicEditor reads initialValue once, so a regenerate has to replace the text by remounting it. That is why useMnemonicGeneration's state is a flat record rather than a union: a union that dropped the story the moment a regenerate started would unmount the editor holding it and take the learner's tweaks with it. The story and its attempt number survive the wait AND a refusal; only a new story bumps the attempt, and only that remounts. The cache is keyed on frame AND keyword, because a story written for Heisig's keyword is not a story for the learner's own, and an in-flight map means a warm-ahead racing a tap is charged once. The quota is charged before the model is called, so warming stops at two frames ahead and after any refusal — and only ever after the learner has asked for one story. The keyword override writes through a new saveNote(): saveMnemonic and saveKeyword each carry the other value from their render closure, so calling both in one handler writes a stale one over the fresh one. It also waits for the note row to load — committing a keyword before the row is read would erase a story this screen never saw. lib/rtk-session.ts is the queue: meet all five frames, then test every frame once before any twice, bring a miss back two items later. IMPLEMENTED_STEPS names the steps the runner can render, and startSession leaves out the rest so the progress count is never inflated by what it will not ask. No crown is awarded while nothing is tested. Gates: typecheck, lint (0 errors), 120 tests. Prove-failed four ways: raising either prompt cap (which first exposed two tautological assertions of my own), raising the prefetch cap, making the hook drop its story while loading (2 fail), and removing the dismissal reset from Generate (1 fails). Visual confusion is the failure mode RTK actually has, so the distractors are the frame's own lookalikes from kanji_similarity, in rank order. Measured: all 2,200 path frames have similarity rows, but a distractor also needs a keyword, so it must itself be a path frame — on that basis 7 frames have none and 43 have fewer than three, which makes the same-unit top-up load-bearing rather than insurance. No two of the 2,200 keywords collide, so the picker dedupes on the literal alone. The answer's position comes from a seed, because a fixed slot is learnable in a session or two. No new telemetry: lib/practice-logger.ts already had logPracticeEvent and recordConfusion, so the PracticeMode union and practiceModeLabel gain the two drills instead — without the labels the stats screen would print "rtk_recognise" verbatim. recordConfusion orders a pair by entry id and every kanji card's id is the 0 sentinel, so the runner sorts the two literals first or (A,B) and (B,A) become two rows. The session id carries a timestamp, since the node id alone would collapse every pass over it into one pseudo-session. The runner now has a test of its own, with the drills stubbed, and it earned its keep three times over: an answer was advancing the queue twice, which made the 650ms pause and the whole reveal unreachable in the app; a drill mounted before its options had loaded, which handed back every question and skipped the node in one cascade; and onSeen cleared the result ref before the state updater read it, so EVERY MISS COUNTED AS A HIT. The last one no review caught — only running the queue did. lib/rtk-assemble.ts and components/rtk/AssembleDrill.tsx land here too, tested but not yet scheduled: the next phase wires them into the runner. Gates: typecheck, lint (0 errors), check-safe-inserts, 201 tests. Prove-failed by clearing the result ref before the updater (1 fails), by removing the double-tap ref (fails only when both taps share one act(), as a real double-tap does), and by raising the distractor cap. … of it
Three drills and the graduation that makes them worth doing.
ASSEMBLE is the exercise unique to RTK — the frame IS its parts, in that order —
and it refuses more frames than it runs. Measured, and it is not what a row
count suggests: of the 2,200 path frames, 165 have no identifiable component at
all and 54 have one, because 280 decomposition edges carry a keyword with
neither a glyph nor a primitive id, and 231 frames contain one. A board missing
a part would teach a decomposition that is simply wrong, so canAssemble refuses
them outright. The decoy pool is 868 components named by their MODAL keyword:
木 is "tree" on 172 edges but also "wood", "2 trees" and "3 trees", and a bare
column under GROUP BY shows whichever row SQLite happened to keep.
WRITE is not Skia. StrokeOrderDiagram already draws these strokes with
react-native-svg in a 109×109 KanjiVG box, so the canvas records a finger stroke
in that same box and the reveal lines up by construction; a second drawing stack
would buy nothing. The grades do not exist until the strokes are shown, so a
grade is always a judgement against the answer rather than a guess at it, and
"close" counts as produced because asking again in the same sitting would test
the hand, not the memory.
CLOZE tests the hook rather than the frame. The markup already has a token for
the keyword — {self} — so the blank is a rendering choice, not surgery on the
learner's prose; a typed answer passes exactly, by stem, or through the 81,036
keyword_synonyms pairs. A miss says whose fault it is: the story's.
GRADUATION writes FSRS cards into the lesson's own default list, which already
existed — seedRtkLessonsIfNeeded seeds RTK Lesson 1..56. It goes through
writeKanjiToList, the database half of addKanjiToList, because the bookmark path
calls getKanjiListIds, which deliberately cannot see default lists and would
reconcile the word straight back off. It skips a frame already carded: at crown
3 a frame owns one card, not three.
Two blockers the audits caught and one they did not: no database handle is ever
waited on (a web cross-tab lock release nulls strokesDb, and the gates would
have spun forever with no recovery); the drawing path had zero coverage because
the test's View mock dropped every responder prop; and the generator's body
guard had been overtaken by its own field caps.
Also: the request can now carry the learner's own words and stories, and the
prompt asks for the markup the app renders — without it a generated story shows
no chips and teaches the association index nothing. myWords is plumbed but
nothing fills it: primitive_note_assoc maps word → targets and the reverse
lookup does not exist. Said plainly in the plan rather than left to be found.
Gates: typecheck, lint (0 errors), check-safe-inserts, 292 tests across 20
suites. stores/settings.test.ts is red and was before this branch — verified by
stashing. Prove-failed: the coordinate scale (4 drawing tests), the no-strokes
dropStep, the modal keyword, the frame-with-a-gap refusal.

Keep the loading state until database initialization finishes.
dictDb starts as null while the provider initializes, so this branch can show the download message on every cold start. Use isReady to keep the existing spinner visible until initialization determines whether the dictionary is available.

Sequence frame graduation after the crown write and mark progress dirty.
Keep graduation at every crown, as the course plan specifies. The effect sets crowned before awardCrown resolves and starts graduateFrames independently. If the award write fails, the screen can still show “Crowned” and create cards without recorded crown progress. Neither progress write marks sync dirty; a sync triggered by an earlier answer can finish before the crown write. Mark sync dirty after the successful progress and card writes.

Count only frames that loadUnitFrames can return.
loadUnitShapes counts every row where heisig_lesson IS NOT NULL. loadUnitFrames also requires heisig_index IS NOT NULL. A row that has a lesson but no index adds a node to the path, but loadNodeFrames returns no frames for that node. The learner then opens an empty node that can never be crowned. Use the same filter in both queries.

Reset loaded when literal changes.
loaded becomes true after the first read and never returns to false. If literal changes on the same hook instance, loaded stays true while mnemonic still holds the previous frame's value. The guard in MeetStep.onKeyword then permits saveNote(mnemonic, …) with the old frame's story. That write stores the wrong story under the new literal. The rejection path also never sets loaded, so the keyword editor stops working after a read error.

…er fired Round one of local review on PR #31. Four reviewers, one per surface. The three that matter most were all things the green suite was actively hiding. GRADUATION WROTE NOTHING on any device that had ever opened the Lists tab. It tested "already carded" by looking for a list_entries row — and seedRtkLessonsIfNeeded seeds one for every kanji of every lesson, so the test was true for all 2,200 frames before a single card existed. The end of the crown ladder was a no-op, and the PR's headline retention claim was false. It now asks srs_cards, with deleted_at, so a frame removed from the list can be graduated again; the card and entry ids are derived rather than random, so two devices crowning the same node offline converge instead of billing the learner two reviews of the same kanji forever; and it creates the list if the learner reached Learn before Lists. The fixture now seeds the entries production seeds — putting the old check back fails 6 of 9. THE CLOZE WAS NEVER ASKED, at any crown. It decided it had no story from `story === null`, which is also what the note hook returns before it has read the row, so every cloze item handed itself straight back. The hook's own `loaded` flag — added in this branch for exactly this distinction, and honoured by Meet — was ignored. The runner test mocked the hook to return null forever and then asserted the skip as correct: the mock encoded the bug as the spec. TWO CONSECUTIVE SKIPS FROZE THE RUNNER. SkipStep had no key and a stable onSkip, so the second one reused the instance, its effect never re-ran, and the queue stopped — a spinner with no exit but Path. Reachable from one transient stroke-tier read error at crown 2. A MISS ON THE LAST ITEM asked the same frame forever: the re-queue clamped to index 0, and the only way out was to claim you had got it right. The test blessed it under the name "puts a miss at the end". THE WIDENED GENERATOR CONTRACT WAS DEAD CODE and the prompt lied about it: no call site passed the archive, so myWords and examples were always empty while the instructions told the model to prefer them. Reverted — fields, body-limit bump and prompt sentences. The markup instruction stays, minus the `(target)` form: no target is ever sent, and inviting one got a hallucinated `p1` that isValidTarget accepts and the reader resolves to an unrelated primitive. THE PREFETCH IS GONE. It contradicted the decision this PR settled — nothing is generated before it is asked for — and it billed 3 units for one Generate, or 9-10 for a five-frame node if the learner had renamed any keyword, because it keyed on Heisig's keyword while the tap keyed on theirs. Deleting it also deleted a stuck halt flag, four silent failure paths and a Regenerate that returned byte-identical text. {self} WAS POISONING THE ASSOCIATION INDEX. Every generated story contains it, extractAssocWords keeps words of three or more characters, and "self" is not among the 22 stop words — so each accepted story taught the auto-linker that "self" was the learner's word for every primitive of that kanji. Also: Generate was enabled before the decomposition loaded, so a paid call could go out with no primitives and be cached under that frame; a node merely OPENED on a stale device reset that node's crown to 0 everywhere, because markNodeSeen bumped updated_at under whole-row last-write-wins — it no longer touches the timestamp of a row that exists; "Delete Course Progress" was undone by reopening a node, which revived the row with its old crown; a failed note read left the keyword permanently unsaveable; assemble read its tap list from a stale closure, so two taps in one batch scored a miss for the right order; and a finished node told the learner the feature was unfinished. My own claims, corrected: it is 232 tests in the course's 16 files, not "292 across 20 suites" (that was a scoped run including pre-existing suites); the commits claim seventeen prove-fails where the PR body says eleven, and one says "three ways" then lists four; the no-strokes prove-fail I claimed could not fail, so the header count it protects is now asserted; the test for "7 frames have no lookalike" asserted that an array was an array, and now measures all 2,200; the TextInput mock dropped every input to the keyword override, so that path was covered by nothing; 9.2 lookalikes was 8.96; 280 unlinkable edges is DB-wide, 232 on the path; and 244 invented primitives in a comment is 233. A one-line settings drift from 8d1a061 has had CI red on master for five OTA cycles: defaultSettings gained readerHighlightExcludedListIds and the test's expected object never did. Fixed, so the full suite is 2,260 tests and 0 failures. And check-safe-inserts, which I loosened last round into a window that could borrow a later statement's ON CONFLICT, now stops at the statement — an unsafe one-liner is caught again. Do not treat a failed note read as an empty note.
If the read fails for a frame with an existing story, this sets loaded to true after clearing mnemonic. A subsequent saveKeyword passes that null mnemonic to upsertOrDelete and overwrites the stored story with an empty string. Keep edits that depend on the existing note disabled until a read succeeds, or make keyword-only writes preserve the stored mnemonic.

A soft-deleted card blocks re-graduation because its deterministic ID is still in use.
The card ID is derived from the unit and the literal. A soft-deleted card still holds that primary key. alreadyCarded skips soft-deleted rows, so graduation tries a new insert. onConflictDoNothing() drops that insert without an error. The frame is still reported as added, but no active card exists.

Every suite on this branch tests one piece. None of them could make the claim the PR actually makes — that a learner who drills a node comes away with cards they can study — and that claim was false for the whole of this branch's history, because the membership test and the seeding disagreed and nothing joined the two up. This runs the real seeding against the real dictionary, the real queue and the real graduation: lesson 1 arrives with its 15 entries and no cards; a crown-0 pass asks meet for all five frames before anything else and twenty items in all; finishing it awards crown 1 and leaves five studiable cards; three crowns leave one card each and a fourth visit has nothing to ask; and a crown the learner deleted is not handed back. Also verified rather than argued: a pass cannot be finished by missing everything. Two hundred consecutive misses on a one-frame node, and five hundred on a five-frame node, leave the queue exactly as long as it started and nothing cleared — so clearing a last-item miss (the fix for the forever-re-ask) cannot buy a crown. Prove-failed: putting graduation's membership test back on list_entries fails 8 of these 14. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The surviving round-2 reviewer (two died on a weekly API limit) found six, and three of them were regressions I introduced yesterday fixing round one. A WRONG LAST ANSWER COULD BUY A CROWN. Fixing the forever-re-ask, I cleared a missed last item into `cleared` — which is the crown gate. The reviewer executed the sequence: a one-frame crown-2 node with no strokes tier drops to [identify, cloze]; miss identify, the storyless cloze skips itself, miss identify again, and it is now the last item, so it clears. Two wrong answers, crown 3, cards made. My own check of this missed it because I only tried missing EVERYTHING, which never shrinks the queue. The item now goes to `skipped`, and I have pinned the reviewer's exact sequence. A FAILED NOTE READ DESTROYED THE SAVED STORY. Setting `loaded` in the catch — my fix for "the keyword is permanently unsaveable" — defeated the guard it was meant to serve: the keyword path then wrote `saveNote(mnemonic ?? "")` with a mnemonic it had never read, blanking the story, and if the keyword matched Heisig's it soft-deleted the whole row on every device. There is now a keyword-only write that touches no other column, and `readFailed` says plainly that null means unknown rather than none. DELETING THE !strokesDb SKIPS REINTRODUCED THE DEAD END. Those branches were the only exit when the handle is lost AFTER being present, which is exactly the case the dropStep guard refuses to drop. Waiting is only right while the handle is there; without it the step is handed back. Also: a rejected save still advanced the queue and reported the frame as met, with the learner's text gone and the Save button dead — it now stays put and says so; the one-shot award guard was a boolean reset by a sibling effect, so a stale session could award and then block the real pass from ever awarding, and it is now keyed to the node it awarded; and a story arriving while the learner was writing their own replaced it, which only Regenerate — an explicit ask from inside the editor — is now allowed to do. Confirmed complete by the same reviewer: the keyed SkipStep, the assemble tap ref, the crowned-node summary, and the removal of IMPLEMENTED_STEPS. Gates: typecheck, lint (0 errors), check-safe-inserts, 2,267 tests across 128 files, 0 failures. Prove-failed: allowing an arriving story to replace the draft (1 fails), and the crown sequence above. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Round 2 — and I am stopping the loop hereTwo of the three round-2 reviewers died at launch on a weekly API limit (resets Oct 6, 08:00 SGT), so this round is one deep review of the React/runner surface plus verification I did myself. That is the reason the loop stops, not a judgement that nothing is left. Three of the six findings were my own round-1 fixes1. A wrong last answer could buy a crown. Fixing the forever-re-ask, I cleared a missed last item into 2. A failed note read destroyed the learner's saved story. Setting 3. Deleting the The other three
