Summary

Add an optional MCP-only user-plugin example for local code discovery and structural review with Sem. I maintain Sem at Ataraxy Labs.

  • Uses the existing user-plugin manifest/stdio MCP format, with no runtime or default-setting changes.
  • Pins @ataraxy-labs/sem@0.27.0 and asks for the repository through the existing MCP variable setup form.
  • Disables Sem cloud access/telemetry; explains initial native-binary downloads, model-provider context, and repository-command execution risks.
  • Includes ZIP installation, explicit enablement, bounded review prompts, troubleshooting and removal instructions.
  • Adds lifecycle coverage for disabled installation, required path binding (including spaces), preserved configuration and cleanup.

This is not a read-only server: sem_check can execute project commands. The example does not change approvals, configure ACP agents, install Weave, add hooks or bundle executables. No speedup claims.

Verification

Using Node 24.21.0 and repository-pinned pnpm 10.34.5:

  • plugin:validate: no findings; SEM_REPO discovered as the required variable
  • userPluginLifecycle.test.ts: all 10 tests passed
  • repository-wide oxfmt --check: passed
  • lint: passed
  • typecheck (node + web): passed
  • i18n: passed
  • git diff --check: passed

Lifecycle fixtures mock MCP connections and OS secret storage, so these are installation/configuration tests, not live Sem calls, OS encryption tests, or desktop visual/end-to-end testing. No live desktop/model session was performed.

UI impact

No UI implementation changes. This is an optional source example that users explicitly package/import, not an automatically installed or enabled server.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an optional Sem code-review plugin for searching code entities, inspecting callers, and reviewing structural differences. It connects to a local Git repository and remains disabled until enabled.
  • Documentation
    • Added setup and usage guidance, including repository configuration, permissions, privacy considerations, troubleshooting, and platform requirements.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Added coverage for plugin installation, configuration, enabling, disabling, and removal.

When local indexing misses a repository-root entity listing, users with Sem credentials can send repository entity data to Sem Cloud despite the example's local-only claim. Add SEM_LOCAL=1 before sharing the example.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 72910

The integration is optional, installed disabled, and requires explicit setup. Existing isolation and lifecycle controls remain in place. However, the claimed cloud-disable behavior is not established for the pinned dependency, and repository selection does not sandbox its commands.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new preset promises disabled Sem cloud access, but enforcement of that privacy boundary remains unresolved. Earlier tagged-source observations indicate a possible credential-backed entity fallback outside the configured network flag; minimal environment inheritance does not itself prevent access to home-directory credentials. This is an inferred design concern, not a verified disclosure finding.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Exposure requires a user to install and enable the example and supply a repository. A malicious dependency or executed project command could affect resources accessible to the local process, potentially beyond that repository. Minimal environment inheritance limits ambient environment secrets but retains HOME and does not establish filesystem, credential-file or network confinement. No elevated service role is requested by the binding.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — No verified retained Security finding is supplied. The unresolved privacy path is conditional on Sem discovering credentials and reaching the reported entity fallback, potentially allowing cloud activity despite the advertised local-only preset. That path is supported by an earlier tagged-source account, not corroborated against the published npm package or a live session; the candidate remains deferred.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing host controls ownership and launch eligibility, while the external Sem process controls repository operations and interpretation of the privacy flags. Required setup variables use private bindings rather than ambient shell values, and configuration changes reject undeclared variables and mismatched ownership. These controls predate the PR; the new binding exercises them without changing their implementation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Existing update snapshots include configuration and wrapped bindings for rollback and restart recovery. Repeated activation preserves matching configuration; a changed revision can invalidate its scope-bound setup values and require reconfiguration. Disable and uninstall remove the active integration but do not erase prior conversations, downloaded packages or Sem caches. End-to-end external-process cleanup remains outside the mocked test evidence.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Validate the exact pinned implementation's credential discovery and entity fallback before treating the preset as a no-cloud boundary. Select the setting actually enforced across those paths, retain separate telemetry suppression, and distinguish dependency flags from OS-level command or network isolation.

Review: add optional Sem example

Verdict: Approve. Same clean shape as the Parallel Search example merged in #2425: a docs pointer, an examples/user-plugins/sem/ package (manifest + stdio MCP config + README), and one lifecycle integration test. Purely additive — no source-code changes, no secrets. I also approved the two pending CI workflows (first-time contributor) so checks run in parallel.

What it does

Adds an optional MCP-only example wrapping Sem (local code-entity search / structural diffs) as a stdio server: npx -y @ataraxy-labs/sem@0.27.0 mcp, with a required SEM_REPO variable the user must set to an absolute Git repository path, and SEM_NO_NETWORK=1 / SEM_NO_TELEMETRY=1 baked in to disable cloud access and telemetry.

Checks performed

  1. Supply-chain sanity — the pinned npm version exists (@ataraxy-labs/sem@0.27.0 on the registry), and the GitHub repo resolves. Pinning the exact version in .mcp.json (rather than a floating tag) is the right call for an example that invokes npx -y.
  2. The test is solid — drives the real example directory through inspect → install → enable → configure → disable → uninstall, and asserts the important isolation properties: install stays disabled, existing MCP settings preserved byte-for-byte, configureMcp rejects an empty SEM_REPO and accepts a path containing spaces, the env template and variable binding are recorded correctly, and uninstall restores the original settings. 10/10 in the touched suite.
  3. Security disclosures are honest and prominent — the README states plainly that sem_check can run repository build/test commands (not a read-only server), that SEM_REPO is not a sandbox, that npm/native-binary installation still uses the network, and that returned source enters the conversation. This is the right way to document a stdio example with command-execution tools.
  4. Convention fit — mirrors #2425's structure and extends the same test file with the same pattern.
  5. Author disclosure — the README states the example is contributed by Sem's maintainer at Ataraxy Labs. Transparent, same vendor-example product call as #2425 for maintainers to weigh.

Minor notes

  • Unlike #2425, this example ships no LICENSE file in its directory — the README instead points at DeepChat's Apache-2.0 license, and the documented ZIP command packages only the manifest, .mcp.json and README. Consistent enough, but including the LICENSE like the Parallel example would make the two examples uniform.
  • The example requires Node/npm through DeepChat's Toolchains and targets macOS/Linux ARM64/x64; the docs paragraph and README both say so. Fine.

One observation for maintainers: this is now the second vendor-contributed example in examples/user-plugins/ within a week. If this category keeps growing, a short policy note in authoring.md (who can add examples, disclosure expectations) might be worth writing down — both current examples already follow good practice voluntarily.

🌐 Web query:

"@ataraxy-labs/sem" "0.27.0" SEM_NO_NETWORK SEM_NO_TELEMETRY

💡 Result:

For `@ataraxy-labs/sem` **0.27.0**, I could verify `SEM_NO_TELEMETRY=1` only in the project’s **current README**: it forces telemetry recording off. The source I found does not establish whether that behavior is present in version 0.27.0 specifically. ([github.com](https://github.com/Ataraxy-Labs/sem/blob/main/README.md?utm_source=openai))

I couldn’t verify `SEM_NO_NETWORK` in the available sources, so its effect—and whether 0.27.0 supports it—remains unresolved. The 0.27.0 release is referenced in a package update notice, but that notice doesn’t document either variable. Add SEM_LOCAL=1 to the Sem MCP environment.

SEM_NO_NETWORK=1 does not disable cloud routing for all MCP tools in Sem 0.27.0. When the local index declines a repository-root entity listing, sem_entities can call Sem Cloud if credentials exist. This contradicts the README claim that the preset disables Sem cloud access.

Review comment at @examples/user-plugins/sem/.mcp.json around lines 1 - 11:
Add SEM_LOCAL=1 to the env object in the Sem MCP configuration alongside
SEM_NO_NETWORK and SEM_NO_TELEMETRY, so Sem tools use local routing and do not
fall back to cloud access.
