The Kochi Hummingbird 68 is not recognized by the keyboard registry. This adds a narrowly scoped driver for USB 1CA2:0901, usage FFA0:1, to read and change Windows/Mac mode. Each write must be acknowledged and confirmed by both mode queries before returning success.

The independent codec is based on the public HB68 web configurator, its bundled implementation, and sanitized packets recorded from a physical KOCHI68 Keyboard on macOS. No vendor bundle is copied into this package. Scope is limited to naming and system mode; no analog, lighting, remapping, flash, firmware, reset, or calibration commands are exposed.

Validation:

  • npm run check on Node.js 24: build, 104 passing tests, package dry-run.
  • Physical USB: name query, initial Mac mode, Windows write/ack plus both read-back queries, Mac write/ack plus both read-back queries. Original Mac mode restored.
  • The actual TypeScript driver was also exercised from the local OpenMouse UI against the physical keyboard through a local native-HID QA adapter. Browser permission selection itself was not tested through that adapter.
  • Discovery rejects boot-keyboard/stream collections and other VID/PIDs. Tests cover malformed replies, bad checksums, failed writes, inconsistent state, transport errors, timeouts, serialization, and disconnects.
  • Companion OpenMouse build and all 377 app tests pass with the local package.

Firmware version, unplug persistence, and Linux/Windows host operation remain unverified. Evidence and limitations are documented in docs/kochi-hb68.md; raw mode fixtures contain no serials or keystrokes.

Companion OpenMouse PR #763 adds discovery, a system-mode card, and overview-only navigation for this device. Other HB68 features remain outside this change.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 8b5db

The change is narrowly limited to an authorized keyboard’s naming and Windows/Mac mode controls. Device filtering and acknowledgement/read-back checks constrain exposure. Remaining risks concern competing clients and ambiguous outcomes after interrupted writes, rather than demonstrated privilege escalation or broader data access.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: Transaction serialization is confined to each client, not the shared HIDDevice. The public factory permits separate clients with independent queues and listeners; matching replies can be consumed by both, and either client can close their shared device. Concurrent ownership therefore weakens confirmation and failure containment and can produce mode-control drift. Whether the companion application prevents this configuration is unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The new client’s command authority is bounded to naming and Windows/Mac mode on each caller-supplied supported HIDDevice. Its implementation exposes no firmware, flash, reset, calibration, lighting, or remapping command. A spoofed device must still be made accessible by the host before this client can communicate with it.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A device controlling its reports can supply structurally valid replies for the pending command. Command correlation cannot establish freshness or authenticity, but the inspected path does not convert such replies into broader privileges or commands. Stale same-command replies and shared-client ownership remain confirmation risks rather than demonstrated security exploits.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The client opens an existing HIDDevice and does not request browser permission itself. Descriptor and collection checks are repeated even for direct construction. Status reads additionally require the reported name KOCHI68; direct mode operations do not require that name check.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — A write applied before an acknowledgement is lost can leave the keyboard changed while the API rejects. Session fencing prevents further use of that client, but there is no automatic rollback or mandatory reconciliation on a replacement client. The test transport throws before applying a failed send, so device-side partial-write recovery is not established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define a single active transaction owner per HIDDevice, enforced through exclusive ownership or a device-wide queue. Make recovery from an ambiguous write explicitly re-read both modes before presenting confirmed state. These are containment proposals, not verified vulnerability findings.
