Closing the main window now hides the app to a tray icon instead of quitting.

  • Tray icon uses the app icon, tooltip "OpenMouse Desktop". Left-click or double-click restores the window; the right-click menu has "Open OpenMouse" and "Quit".
  • The X button and Alt+F4 hide the window (and its taskbar button). The app keeps running, so Discord presence, game detection and profile switching continue, at the slower background polling rate.
  • When launched at login, the app starts hidden in the tray (it used to start minimized).
  • If the tray icon can't be created, closing still quits, so there is never an invisible app with no way back.
  • Windows only for now; other platforms keep the old behavior. No Settings toggle yet.

Checked: builds, tests pass, and a close request hides the window while the process stays alive. The tray icon click/menu paths were not exercised by hand.

Note

Add Windows system tray icon with hide-on-close behavior

  • Adds a Windows tray module using tray-icon 0.24, with Open and Quit menu items; left-clicking the tray or choosing Open restores and activates the main window, and Quit calls cx.quit()
  • Closing the main window now hides it via ShowWindow(SW_HIDE) instead of destroying it, when tray install succeeds
  • OS-login startup hides the window when a tray is available and still minimizes it otherwise; non-Windows platforms get a no-op fallback that reports no tray
  • Setup uses the executable's resource icon and returns false if icon, menu, or tray creation fails, leaving the caller without tray behavior
  • Behavioral Change: window-close requests are vetoed when a tray is installed — see tray.install in tray.rs and the close handling in main.rs

Macroscope summarized fab5348.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added Windows system-tray support with Open and Quit commands.
    • Selecting Open restores and brings the app window to the foreground.
    • Closing the window hides it in the tray while keeping the app running.
    • When launched at Windows login, the app starts hidden if tray support is available; otherwise, it starts minimized.
    • Manual launches continue to open normally.
    • If tray setup is unavailable, the app continues without tray functionality.

📝 Walkthrough

The application adds Windows system-tray support. Tray commands can restore the window or quit the app. Closing the window hides it when tray support is active. OS login launches hide the window on Windows when a tray is available; otherwise, they minimize it.

Changes: Windows tray support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Tray setup and platform entry point
gpui/Cargo.toml, gpui/src/lib.rs, gpui/src/tray.rs
Adds the Windows-only tray-icon dependency and exposes the tray module. Tray installation creates an icon and Open and Quit menu items. Installation returns false if setup fails or on non-Windows platforms.
Tray commands and window lifecycle
gpui/src/tray.rs
Tray events queue show or quit commands. The command loop restores and foregrounds the window, exits the app, or hides the window and prevents termination when a close request is intercepted.
Startup behavior
gpui/src/bin/main.rs
Startup installs tray support before handling OS login launches. On Windows, login launches hide the window when a tray is available and minimize it otherwise.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to fab53

No confirmed issue currently blocks merging. The tray click and menu paths have not been manually exercised.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to fab53

The change is limited to Windows desktop behavior and preserves existing sharing settings. Tray creation failures retain the previous startup and close behavior. No new privilege escalation or remote command path was identified, but native restore and shutdown behavior has not been fully verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated control scope is the running desktop application and its captured main window. The important exposure change is longer-lived background activity after close, not a newly demonstrated cross-service or privileged command channel.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Native callbacks map recognized menu identifiers and left-button events to a private two-command enum. Unknown menu identifiers are ignored. Native window operations derive their target from the supplied GPUI window rather than from callback data.
  • observed — The OS-launch predicate remains an argument check used to select initial visibility. The changed startup branch does not use that predicate to grant additional authority.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Native visibility/foreground return values and application-context update results are not checked. Consequently, source inspection establishes the intended recovery path but not successful restoration under every platform failure. No concrete reachable loss-of-recovery condition was established.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — Adds an always-on Windows tray workflow with native event handling and changes close behavior so the process remains alive instead of exiting. The new lifecycle, restore/quit paths, and startup hiding behavior warrant human review.

115-115: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Restore the window state before the show call can fail silently.

show calls ShowWindow and SetForegroundWindow through hwnd_of. If hwnd_of returns None, the Win32 calls are skipped. The code then relies on window.activate_window() alone. A hidden window (hidden through ShowWindow(SW_HIDE)) may not become visible through that call.

In this case ACTIVITY.set_active(true) still runs. The window stays hidden while background polling runs at full rate. The same problem applies to hide, which sets ACTIVITY inactive even when the hide call is skipped.

This case is unlikely, because the window handle should always be a Win32 handle on Windows. Set ACTIVITY only when the Win32 call ran, or log the None case.

Update the show and hide flows around hwnd_of, ShowWindow, and
SetForegroundWindow so ACTIVITY is changed only when the Win32 window operation
actually runs; handle or log the None case instead of silently continuing.
Preserve the existing window activation behavior while ensuring failed handle
lookup cannot leave the window hidden or activity state inconsistent.
