Second step from the web fetching-layer audit: one poll helper for every data poll.

What changed

  • New apps/web/src/data/poll.ts pollTicks(every): one tick per interval, the first after a full interval. Ticks that fall while the tab is hidden or navigator.onLine === false are skipped. On the first visibilitychange / online after a skipped tick it fetches at once, and a regular tick within half an interval of that catch-up is dropped, so returning never fetches twice back to back. Off the browser (vitest node env) it always counts as present.
  • Migrated every data poll onto it:
    • Already skipped hidden ticks, no catch-up before: root Connect panel, anomalies list/detail, logs live tail, dashboards auto-refresh, share, analytics.
    • Polled in hidden tabs before: settings ingestion (15 s) and data-platform apply (2 s), code-review PRs (5 s), overview setup, Cloudflare list/zone/worker, Railway, GCP list, and the integrations page polls (GitHub, Cloudflare, scrape targets, checks, Railway, PlanetScale, GCP).
    • The lab copy of the logs tail.
  • GitHub's branch-change force poll window now ends with one last status read, so a window spent in a hidden tab still lands the change.
  • Left as they were: clock-only ticks (countdowns, "synced 2m ago"), the OAuth popup tickers (they detect connect completion), Command-level delay loops (sources/new, checkout confirm) and the version check (already visibility-driven).

Verification

  • data/poll.test.ts (TestClock, fake presence): cadence, skipped ticks with a single catch-up, no catch-up when nothing was missed, the double-tick drop, and the tick past half an interval still running.
  • vitest run over data, logs, settings, integrations, infra-integrations, anomalies, dashboards, overview, analytics, share, code-review, lab and update: 100 files, 518 tests passed. tsrs --noEmit clean, oxlint clean on the changed files.
  • Two review passes (correctness + Effect conventions); every finding is fixed.
  • Preview check of the network panel with the tab hidden/visible to follow.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Automatic refreshes now pause when the browser tab is hidden or the device is offline.
    • Refreshing resumes with a catch-up update when visibility or connectivity returns.
    • Presence-aware polling now supports dashboards, logs, analytics, anomaly views, integrations, code reviews, sharing, and connection status updates.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Reduced unnecessary background requests while pages are inactive.
    • Improved refresh timing to avoid redundant updates immediately after returning.

Every data poll now runs on one helper, `pollTicks`. A tick that falls while
the tab is hidden or the browser is offline is skipped, and the first return
after a skipped tick fetches at once. A regular tick within half an interval
of that catch-up is dropped, so returning does not fetch twice.

Before, seven polls skipped hidden ticks with no catch-up, nine kept polling
in hidden tabs (code-review PRs every 5 s, the data-platform apply every 2 s,
the integration settle polls), and none paused offline. The GitHub branch
change force poll now ends with one last read, so a window spent hidden still
lands the change.

🟢 Confidence 10/10 · safe to merge
Timing and catch-up are pinned by TestClock tests; the real-browser visibilitychange/online wiring is only exercised through a stubbed document.
no findings · tests covered · risk medium

Collapses every web data poll onto one pollTicks helper that skips ticks while the tab is hidden or offline and does a single catch-up fetch on return, preserving each site's cadence. Nothing to fix.

  • pollTicks skips hidden/offline ticks and drops a tick within half an interval of a catch-up
  • 18 pages move from Stream.tick/setInterval/fromEffectRepeat polls onto pollTicks
  • githubForcePoll reads status once more when its 10 s window closes

Before merge

  • Manual · Do the planned preview network-panel check with the tab hidden and restored
What was checked
  • First-tick timing is unchanged: base sites either used Stream.tick + drop(1) or fromSchedule/fromEffectRepeat, both matching pollTicks' dropped first tick
  • after never ends (Effect.never, subscription.ts:134-140), so the flatMap in githubForcePoll still emits and the entry keeps running
  • endedForcePoll only clears isForcePolling on a version match (update-github.ts:100), so the extra tick cannot cancel its own in-flight status read

📝 Walkthrough

The web app adds shared presence-aware polling. The polling pauses while hidden or offline, emits a catch-up tick after presence returns, and replaces local polling streams across page, provider, and integration subscriptions. Tests cover timing and presence transitions.

Changes: Shared polling

The window's final read fired on schedule, so offline it failed and then
ended the only GitHub poll. It now waits for the tab to be visible and online
(`whenPresent`) before the read and the end of the window.

🟢 Confidence 9/10 · safe to merge
pollTicks cadence and catch-up are pinned by poll.test.ts; only the githubForcePoll presence wiring is untested.
1 note · tests partial −1 · risk medium

pollTicks replaces every setInterval data poll in the web app with a presence-aware tick, and the GitHub force-poll window now waits for the tab to be back before its last status read. The helper reads sound and is well tested; safe to merge.

  • pollTicks skips ticks while hidden/offline and ticks once on return
  • every in the integrations page now maps pollTicks instead of setInterval
  • githubForcePoll defers its final read and end to whenPresent

Findings

🔵 Note · F1 · githubForcePoll's deferral has no test and cannot be driven

tests · apps/web/src/page/integrations/subscription.ts:279-281

The new window end emits a status read before EndedGithubForcePoll and waits for the tab to be back, but nothing exercises it: the integrations page has scene tests only, no subscription test. whenPresent() here takes the module's browserPresence, so a test cannot make the entry start hidden and assert the read still lands. Give the entry a Presence (as pollTicks accepts) and drive dependenciesToStream with a fake, asserting TickedGithubPoll precedes ended and that nothing is emitted while absent.

Thread a `Presence` into the entry (or test `dependenciesToStream` with a fake presence) and add a subscription test for the hidden-then-visible window end.

`githubForcePoll`'s deferral has no test and cannot be driven
The new window end emits a status read before `EndedGithubForcePoll` and waits for the tab to be back, but nothing exercises it: the integrations page has scene tests only, no subscription test. `whenPresent()` here takes the module's `browserPresence`, so a test cannot make the entry start hidden and assert the read still lands. Suggested fix: Thread a `Presence` into the entry (or test `dependenciesToStream` with a fake presence) and add a subscription test for the hidden-then-visible window end.
What was checked
  • Poll mode joins a read in flight (update-status.ts:55), so the catch-up and force-poll ticks cannot double-fetch
  • whenPresent resolves immediately when present; Stream.succeed + lazily subscribed changes loses no event
  • Drop rule verified by hand for catches 1 s and 8 s before the next tick (poll.test.ts:68, :86)

Preview test on app-pr-1605.maple.dev @ 7c61dc7 (separate test agent, Preview org, /logs?refresh=5). Hidden and offline were simulated in-page (overriding document.hidden / navigator.onLine and dispatching visibilitychange / online). Times are browser performance.now() ms.

Scenario Result
Visible Pass: list-logs every 5000 to 5003 ms
Hidden 20 s Pass: 0 fetches. Return at 75449 → catch-up fetch at 75458 (+9 ms), next regular tick at 80435 (+4977 ms), no double fetch
Offline 20 s Pass: 0 fetches. online at 135448 → fetch at 135455, then 140447, 145450
Hidden 2 s, nothing missed Pass: no extra fetch on return, next regular tick on schedule
Return ~1 s before a tick Pass: one fetch only (the tick within half an interval was dropped), cadence resumes
Overview, Settings › Ingestion, Integrations, Anomalies Pass: load with data or normal empty states, no console errors or HTTP ≥400

Traces (Maple, deployment.environment = pr-1605, maple-api span list-logs): one request every ~5 s, durations 99 to 533 ms, 0 errors. The gaps match the test exactly: none between 15:36:08 and 15:36:28 (hidden) or between 15:37:08 and 15:37:28 (offline), each followed by a catch-up. The only errors in the environment are the alerting TickDispatchErrors also seen on other previews, unrelated to the web app.
