| They arrived as an experimental feature in Prometheus 2.40 and are stable from 3.8. From 3.9 you turn on scraping them with the <code>scrape_native_histograms: true</code> setting. The classic text format cannot carry them, so the target must serve the protobuf exposition format. Client libraries can expose a classic and a native version of the same histogram during a migration. | ||

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Fix the native histogram version and migration guidance.
The paragraph has two problems:
- The version is wrong. The text says
scrape_native_histograms: trueis the switch "From 3.9". The Prometheus spec says starting with v3.8.0, native histograms are supported as a stable feature. However, scraping native histograms still has to be activated explicitly via the scrape_native_histograms configuration setting. The only change in 3.9 is that the feature flag is a true no-op and explicitly setting scrape_native_histograms is required. - The migration advice can break dashboards. The text says client libraries can expose both versions during a migration. It does not say that Prometheus then drops the classic version. If scrape_native_histograms is true (default in v4+), Prometheus will prefer the native histogram parts over the classic histogram parts, even if both are exposed for the same histogram. A reader who follows the guide as written loses the
_bucketseries. The guide's ownhistogram_quantile(... _bucket ...)queries then return no data. Kubernetes docs say to always set always_scrape_classic_histograms: true during migration.

Turn on scraping them with the <code>scrape_native_histograms: true</code> setting; from 3.9 the old feature flag does nothing. The classic text format cannot carry them, so the target must serve the protobuf exposition format. Client libraries can expose a classic and a native version of the same histogram during a migration. Prometheus prefers the native version when both exist, so also set <code>always_scrape_classic_histograms: true</code> until your <code>_bucket</code> queries are migrated.📝 Committable suggestion

Shorter, grouped into five sections, with diagrams for the metric line, the pull model, the four types and histogram buckets. Client code in six languages, a Docker Compose setup for Prometheus and Grafana, and screenshots of scraping into Maple. Adds a small highlighter for guide code blocks.
