🔴 Live alerts evaluate the wrong window
For a five-minute rule, endSeconds moves four minutes back while windowSeconds stays five minutes. The 10:00–10:05 alert reads 09:56–10:01, causing false alerts and missed breaches.
Learn more
An alert's range function is evaluated over (evaluationTime - windowSeconds, evaluationTime]. Here, the evaluation time is shifted earlier but the window retains its original length. Both the value and sample-count queries therefore read a different interval from the scheduler's requested interval, while evaluateRule still treats the returned value as the current window.
Example: At 10:05 the scheduler evaluates a five-minute alert for 10:00–10:05. With a 300-second range and timeSeconds=10:01, PromQL reads 09:56–10:01, including four minutes preceding the requested window.
Recommended fix: Keep the interval consistent with the requested alert window; if delayed ingestion requires lag, delay the scheduler's evaluation window or explicitly shift both window boundaries and their reported evaluation time, rather than shifting only the PromQL evaluation timestamp. Apply the same policy to preview and live evaluation.

Intended. Google publishes many system metrics up to ~4 minutes late, so an alert that reads 10:00–10:05 at 10:05 sees part of its window empty: sample count 0, then no-data behaviour, or undercounted sums. Live Google alerts therefore evaluate the same window length, ending 4 minutes earlier. This is the same kind of lag the metrics poller has always had (it reads 5 minutes behind). Preview and charts are unshifted on purpose: they show what has arrived. I'll state the delay in the docs.

🔴 Uneven samples distort live metric averages
When series have different sample counts, avg_over_time gives each series equal weight instead of weighting each sample. Averages diverge from the warehouse aggregation and can misfire alerts.
Learn more
For a gauge or delta metric, this query adds one avg_over_time per series and divides by count by (project_id) of those series. That computes the mean of series means, not the mean of all datapoints. The same shape affects both kinds because they share this branch. mergeGcpSeries then combines the already biased sum and count across projects.
Example: One series has the single sample 0, and another has five samples of 10. The result is (0+10)/2 = 5; the mean of all six samples is 50/6.
Recommended fix: Sum samples with sum_over_time and divide by their count_over_time, aggregating both by group and project before the cross-project merge. Add tests with unequal sample counts per series.

Fixed in f334946: avg is now Σsum_over_time / Σcount_over_time per (group, project), merged across projects, so every sample has equal weight, as in the warehouse. Test added with unequal sample counts (50/6). Single-series values on real Google are unchanged.

🟡 Metrics pages exceed their requested limit
When both sources have matches, gcpRows append up to another full page after warehouse pagination. A limit=20 request returns up to 40 metrics, breaking the v2 list contract.
Learn more
paginateOffsetQuery already trims the warehouse rows to query.limit and computes has_more and next_cursor for that subset. Appending up to query.limit more Google rows after that work leaves data.length larger than the requested page size, and has_more only describes warehouse rows.
Example: With 20 matching warehouse metrics and 20 Google metrics, GET /v2/metrics?limit=20 returns 40 objects on the first page, then starts warehouse page two at offset 20.
Recommended fix: Paginate the combined result as one logical listing or explicitly expose Google metrics outside the paginated data envelope. Ensure has_more and next_cursor describe the returned list.
Was this helpful? React with 👍 or 👎 to provide feedback.

Fixed in f334946: /v2/metrics lists warehouse metrics only again, so paging and limit are untouched. Google metrics are still queryable by name through /v2/metrics/*, and listed in the app and in MCP list_metrics.

🟡 Sub-minute buckets silently become minute buckets
With bucketSeconds=15, gcpRangeWindow uses a 60-second step and gcpMetricsTimeseries returns minute buckets. Callers still report 15-second resolution, so chart timing is misleading.
Learn more
The query spec accepts any positive integer bucket width, while gcpRangeWindow silently clamps widths below 60 seconds. The engine uses the clamped width to build the response's bucket timeline in makeQueryEngineExecute. The v2 timeseries handler reports the original bucketSeconds, not the width used to produce those buckets.
Example: A client sends bucket_seconds: 15 for a ten-minute Google metric chart. Google returns one point per minute and the response says bucket_seconds: 15.
Recommended fix: Reject unsupported sub-minute buckets with a validation error, or propagate the effective step through every response and caller that reports the bucket width.
Was this helpful? React with 👍 or 👎 to provide feedback.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Kept on purpose. Cloud Monitoring stores most system metrics at 60 s resolution, so a 15 s step would only return the same sample four times. The engine builds the bucket timeline from the effective 60 s step, so charts place points correctly. The v2 response echoing the requested bucket_seconds is cosmetic for Google metrics; rejecting sub-minute steps would break the app's short-range charts, which pick small buckets automatically.

🟡 Resource labels disappear from metric discovery
When a resource label appears only outside topk(5), gcpMetricAttributeKeys never sees it. The label vanishes from filter and breakdown options despite existing on chartable series.
Learn more
gcpMetricAttributeKeys seeds the key list with metric descriptor labels, then adds resource labels seen in the sampled series. Google descriptors do not list resource label keys, so a resource label present only outside the five highest-valued series is never discovered.
Example: Five busy Cloud SQL databases all have region, while a quieter sixth series also has replica_id. The sample includes only the first five, and the UI cannot offer replica_id as a group-by choice.
Recommended fix: Discover resource label keys from the applicable monitored-resource descriptors or from a representative set not limited by metric value; document any deliberate sampling cap.
Was this helpful? React with 👍 or 👎 to provide feedback.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in f334946: label keys no longer come from a sample. They are the metric's labels plus the labels of its active monitored-resource types, read from Google's monitoredResourceDescriptors (cached for a day), plus project_id and monitored_resource. On real Google, Cloud SQL CPU now lists database_id, region, project_id, monitored_resource.

Google Cloud Monitoring metricKind DELTA monotonic delta sum OpenTelemetry delta sum monotonic semantics
💡 Result:
**Yes—Google Cloud Monitoring `metricKind=DELTA` is the matching representation for an OpenTelemetry monotonic DELTA Sum.** Google’s OTLP mapping explicitly maps `SUM (monotonic, DELTA)` to Cloud Monitoring `DELTA`. ([docs.cloud.google.com](https://docs.cloud.google.com/stackdriver/docs/reference/telemetry/v1.metrics))
The terms describe different properties:
- **DELTA** means each point is the sum of measurements over its own time interval, not a running total. Successive intervals are expected to be continuous and non-overlapping. ([github.com](https://github.com/open-telemetry/opentelemetry-proto/blob/main/opentelemetry/proto/metrics/v1/metrics.proto))
- **Monotonic** means the sum represents a nominally increasing quantity; for a DELTA Sum, readers should expect each interval’s value to be non-negative. It does **not** mean the reported DELTA values must increase from point to point. ([opentelemetry.io](https://opentelemetry.io/docs/specs/otel/metrics/data-model/))
So values such as `3, 2, 5` across successive intervals are consistent with a monotonic DELTA Sum: each interval’s increment is non-negative, even though the increments vary. Cloud Monitoring’s DELTA value likewise represents the change over `(startTime, endTime]`. ([docs.cloud.google.com](https://docs.cloud.google.com/monitoring/api/v3/kinds-and-types))

site:cloud.google.com/monitoring custom metric DELTA DOUBLE negative value metricKind DELTA
💡 Result:
**No—not for a `custom.googleapis.com` metric.** Although `DOUBLE` and `DELTA` are generally a supported type/kind pairing, Google’s documentation explicitly marks `DELTA` + `DOUBLE` as **not permitted for custom metrics**. ([docs.cloud.google.com](https://docs.cloud.google.com/monitoring/api/v3/kinds-and-types?utm_source=openai))
That restriction means a negative `DOUBLE` value doesn’t make the combination valid. The docs describe DELTA values as changes over an interval, but don’t separately establish a general rule about whether DELTA values may be negative. ([docs.cloud.google.com](https://docs.cloud.google.com/monitoring/api/v3/kinds-and-types?utm_source=openai))
For custom metrics, choose a permitted kind/type combination; for example, use `GAUGE` + `DOUBLE` if you need to record signed values. ([docs.cloud.google.com](https://docs.cloud.google.com/monitoring/api/v3/kinds-and-types?utm_source=openai))

Google Cloud Monitoring DELTA metric negative values custom metric DELTA INT64 non-counter built-in metric
💡 Result:
**Short answer:** DELTA means “the change during this interval”; it doesn’t by itself mean “counter.” Google’s docs even use a stock summary of gains or losses as an example of DELTA, so a negative delta makes sense when the measured quantity decreases. `INT64` is signed. ([docs.cloud.google.com](https://docs.cloud.google.com/monitoring/docs/monitoring-overview?hl=en&utm_source=openai))
But **you can’t define a `custom.googleapis.com` metric as `DELTA` + `INT64`**: Google explicitly marks that combination as unsupported for custom metrics. Built-in metrics can use it; whether a particular built-in metric permits negative values depends on that metric’s meaning and descriptor. ([docs.cloud.google.com](https://docs.cloud.google.com/monitoring/api/v3/kinds-and-types?utm_source=openai))
If you need to publish signed changes yourself, use a `GAUGE` metric with `INT64` (or `DOUBLE`) and document that each sample is an interval change. The docs establish the type restriction and DELTA semantics; they don’t state a universal ingestion rule for negative values across built-in DELTA metrics. ([docs.cloud.google.com](https://docs.cloud.google.com/monitoring/api/v3/kinds-and-types?utm_source=openai))

Do not infer monotonicity from metricKind.
DELTA counters are valid monotonic sums, and the compiler calculates their rate correctly. However, Google also permits built-in DELTA INT64 metrics that represent signed gains or losses. GcpMetricDescriptor has no monotonicity field, so this line marks those metrics as monotonic. MCP and web defaults can then select rate, although Maple reserves rate and increase for monotonic sums.
Use explicit monotonicity metadata or an allowlist of known DELTA counters. Do not change every DELTA metric to non-monotonic, because that would break valid DELTA counters.

Leaving this as is. Google's metric descriptors carry no monotonicity field, and the built-in DELTA metrics are almost all counters (request, byte and operation counts), which is what drives rate/increase defaults. A signed DELTA metric would still chart correctly with sum/avg; only the suggested default would be off. An allowlist would have to track Google's catalog by hand, so I'd add one only once a real signed-delta case shows up.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
@JeremyFunk Understood. Thanks for the guidance. This is an accepted edge case in the suggested default, not a failure of sum or avg. I won’t press for an allowlist without a concrete signed-DELTA metric.

Learning: In packages/backend/src/services/warehouse/gcp-metric-catalog.ts, the maintainer intentionally uses metricKind to set isMonotonic for Google Cloud metrics because Google metric descriptors have no monotonicity field and built-in DELTA metrics are predominantly counters. A potentially incorrect rate/increase default for signed DELTA metrics is an accepted trade-off; sum/avg remain usable. Do not recommend a manually maintained counter allowlist without a concrete signed-DELTA metric that demonstrates the need.

service.nameis no longer offered for Google metrics. - Multi-resource message: reads as intended, and the suggested filter returns data.
- Metrics off: the widget title reads "Google Cloud metrics are not available".
- No 4xx/5xx and no page errors.
Low, left as follow-ups:
- Buckets Google hasn't published yet (about the last 2–4 minutes) draw as a drop to 0 at the chart's end.
- With metrics off, the metric detail page shows the generic "No data" text instead of "not available".
Ports the branch's React changes to the Foldkit app main now serves: - A Google metric breaks down by its first label (its breakdown waits on the labels), and no picker offers service.name for one: the breakdown, the detail group-by and the dashboard query builder. - No datapoint or label usage counts for Google metrics: Maple stores none. - Grid cards cut a Google metric's domain prefix and say it is read live. - Widget service suggestions skip Google rows. The route already keeps a metric type's slashes in one encoded segment; a test pins it.

Warning
groupBy: ["service"] silently collapses a Google metric chart to one series
F2 · Warning · correctness
groupLabelOf (line 60) returns undefined for a service group-by, and the metrics timeseries spec allows it (packages/domain/src/query-engine.ts:276), so /v2/metrics/timeseries with group_by=service, a saved dashboard widget, or an MCP query_data grouped by service draws one summed line where the warehouse path returns one series per service. gcpMetricsBreakdown (line 180) rejects the same request with a message saying Google metrics have no service.name; the timeseries and alert paths should reject it the same way instead of answering something else.
Reject a `service` group-by in `gcpMetricsTimeseries` and `gcpMetricsAlertBuckets` the way `gcpMetricsBreakdown` does, before compiling.

In `packages/query-engine/src/runtime/gcp-metrics.ts:153-157`: `groupBy: ["service"]` silently collapses a Google metric chart to one series.
`groupLabelOf` (line 60) returns `undefined` for a `service` group-by, and the metrics timeseries spec allows it (`packages/domain/src/query-engine.ts:276`), so `/v2/metrics/timeseries` with `group_by=service`, a saved dashboard widget, or an MCP `query_data` grouped by service draws one summed line where the warehouse path returns one series per service. `gcpMetricsBreakdown` (line 180) rejects the same request with a message saying Google metrics have no `service.name`; the timeseries and alert paths should reject it the same way instead of answering something else.
Suggested fix: Reject a `service` group-by in `gcpMetricsTimeseries` and `gcpMetricsAlertBuckets` the way `gcpMetricsBreakdown` does, before compiling.
Verify the problem exists at that location before changing it, and keep the fix to those lines.

Leaving this as is. A new query draft groups by service.name by default (createQueryDraft), so rejecting it would fail every new Google widget until the group-by is changed. Google series carry no service, so one ungrouped series is the answer a service group-by has, the same as warehouse rows without service.name. The breakdown rejects it because a breakdown by service has no rows to rank; the pickers no longer offer service.name for Google metrics.

won't fix: a new draft groups by service.name by default, so rejecting would fail every new Google widget; one ungrouped series is the answer for metrics without a service (reasons above).
… denials - listMetrics appended up to limit Google rows to limit warehouse rows, so the metrics table, which reads limit + 1 to tell whether more exist, offered a next page it already had. - listResourceTypes returned the first project that answered without logging the denials before it.

Metrics queries on a Google Cloud Monitoring metric type, e.g.
cloudsql.googleapis.com/database/cpu/utilization, are now answered live by Google instead of the warehouse. Every metric a connection's projects reported in the last day can be charted, alerted on and queried, and nothing is copied into Maple.
