What

Adds privacy.persistence: "memory" to the browser SDK and the Effect client SDK, for sites that must not store anything on the device:

MapleBrowser.init({ ingestKey, serviceName, privacy: { persistence: "memory" } })

With it on, nothing is written to cookies, localStorage, sessionStorage or IndexedDB:

  • Visitor id: off. Existing visitor and visit cookies are purged.
  • Session record: held in memory, so each page load is a new session.
  • Tab lease: skipped (it lived in localStorage).
  • Consent revoke: the timestamp is kept in memory, so data captured before a revoke on the page is still dropped.
  • Replay: the unload chunk is not stored for the next load.
  • Offline queue: stores nothing; failed batches are dropped.

The flag lives on globalThis and only tightens, like consent: if two SDK copies on a page disagree, memory-only wins.

Also

deleteRawCookie now expires the cookie host-only plus on every parent domain, instead of probing for the cookie domain first. Probing writes a cookie, which a memory-only opt-out must not do. This also clears ids written under a broader scope than the current one.

Tradeoffs (documented)

A reload starts a new session and a new replay. Unique, new and returning visitors are not counted. Single-page apps keep one session across client-side navigation.

Testing

  • New tests: consent (memory mode blocks the identifier and keeps the revoke out of storage, and the setting only tightens), session (no storage writes, a stored record is not resumed), and visitor (an opt-out clears a cookie from a broader scope).
  • browser-session, browser and sdk-core tests and tsrs typecheck pass; effect-sdk typechecks.
  • No test covers the offline-queue no-op.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a browser privacy option for memory-only persistence. It avoids device storage and persistent visitor IDs while keeping session features available for the current page load.
    • Updated privacy documentation with the effects on sessions, replay uploads, offline batches, and previously stored cookies.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Memory-only mode now avoids browser storage for session and replay data. Cookie cleanup also covers additional domain scopes.

`privacy.persistence: "memory"` keeps every SDK state in memory: no
cookies, localStorage, sessionStorage or IndexedDB, and no visitor id.
The flag is page-global and only tightens, like consent.

Cookie deletion now expires every parent domain instead of probing, so
an opt-out never writes a cookie and also clears ids written under a
broader scope.

Maple review

🟢 Confidence 8/10 · likely safe to merge
Every storage site the flag must reach is gated and I read each one; only the offline-queue no-op branch has no test.
quality 98/100 · 1 note · tests partial · risk medium

Adds privacy.persistence: "memory" to the browser and Effect client SDKs, gating every device-storage site behind one page-global flag, and rewrites deleteRawCookie to expire the cookie on each parent domain instead of probing for one. The gating is thorough and safe to merge; only the offline-queue no-op lacks a test.

  • privacy.persistence: "memory" sets a page-global flag that only ever tightens (persistence.ts:9)
  • Session record, tab lease, pending replay chunk and consent revoke skip storage
  • mayPersistIdentifier returns false, so visitor tracking is off and stored ids are purged
  • deleteRawCookie expires the cookie on every parent domain, with no probe write

Findings

🔵 Note · F1 · Memory-only startOfflineQueue branch is untested

tests · packages/sdk-core/src/browser/offline.ts:83

startOfflineQueue returns an inert queue when mayUseStorage() is false, but offline.browser.test.ts covers every other branch of this module and imports configurePrivacy already. A regression that opened the maple-offline database or drained stored batches under persistence: "memory" would pass CI. Add a case that configures memory mode, starts the queue, and asserts stash/resend do nothing and no IndexedDB database is created.

  • Memory gate is read at each storage site I opened: session.ts:235/:249/:302, record.ts:114/:128, and offline.ts:83 returns before openDb
  • init.ts:108 and replay-loader.ts:115 disable visitor tracking in memory mode, so visit.ts:52 writes no cookie
  • deleteRawCookie covers host-only, all parent domains and cookieDomainOverride (cookie.ts:83-86), and Math.max on the revoke timestamp only tightens (consent.ts:122)

📝 Walkthrough

The browser SDK adds a privacy.persistence option with browser and memory modes. Memory mode gates browser storage use across consent, sessions, replay, and offline queues. The change also updates cookie deletion behavior, tests, and documentation.

Adds the Persistence type and shared storage-availability configuration. Browser configuration resolves the option to "browser" when unset. Documentation and test fixtures describe or specify the browser default and memory mode.

Consent withdrawal timestamps remain available in page memory when storage is unavailable. Session and replay storage operations are gated, and the offline queue returns no-op methods in memory mode. Cookie deletion expires cookies across candidate domains. Tests and documentation describe these behaviors.

Memory-only mode is a privacy promise. Pages can still keep existing visitor cookies when consent is withheld or the Effect loader exits early. When several SDK copies are loaded, failed batches can also still be written to IndexedDB. Close both gaps before merging.

Purge identifiers when memory persistence is activated.

configurePersistence("memory") only sets a global flag. Both SDKs purge visitor state only from startRuntime; the browser path can skip that call while consent is withheld, and the Effect path can return early when readSessionSink() is set. Existing visitor and visit cookies can therefore remain. Purge after configuring the cookie scope whenever mayUseStorage() is false.

Stop existing offline queues when memory mode wins.

If a browser-mode SDK creates an offline queue before another SDK enables memory mode, this check has already passed. That queue can still write batches to IndexedDB and resend them through add and drain. This violates the page-global memory-only rule. Check the flag before asynchronous queue operations, and stop or close existing queues when the mode tightens.
