Summary

A UX/UI pass on the trace detail page, from an audit against real multi-service and error traces.

  • Service time share was misleading. It used each service's span union, so a parent waiting on a child in another service got the child's time too (a trace where maple-ai held 15.7s of 16s showed 50/50). Shares now attribute each instant to the innermost running span, split across parallel spans, and sum to wall-clock time.
  • Trace start time in the anatomy strip, in the viewer's timezone with the age beside it. Warehouse timestamps are parsed as UTC.
  • Error callout for failed traces: failed-span count, the likely origin (earliest failed span with no failed descendant), its status message, and a "View span" button. Shown on the page and the peek sheet; replaces two copies of the inline hasError logic with collectTraceErrors.
  • View tab persisted in ?view= so reloads and shared links keep Waterfall/Timeline/Flow.
  • Span panel: self time and share of trace next to the duration; the parent span ID selects the parent span.

Testing

  • New unit tests: service-spectrum.test.ts (attribution, parallel split, placeholders) and trace-errors.test.ts (origin selection, 5xx vs 4xx).
  • Typecheck clean for @maple/web, @maple/ui, local-ui.
  • Strip and callout checked in the browser on desktop and mobile widths with a fixture shaped like a real trace. The span panel changes were not checked in the browser (no local trace data).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Trace details highlight failed spans, identify the likely error origin, and let you jump directly to it.
    • Span details show self time and each span’s share of the total trace duration. Parent spans can be selected directly.
    • Your selected trace view—timeline, waterfall, or flow—is reflected in the URL.
    • Trace summaries show start time and improved service time attribution for nested and concurrent spans.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Trace error indicators account for nested failures and exclude missing-span placeholders.

- Service time share credits each instant to the innermost running span,
so a parent waiting on another service no longer takes the child's time.
- Anatomy strip shows when the trace started (viewer timezone + age).
- Error traces get a callout with the likely origin span, its message and
a "View span" action, on the page and in the peek sheet.
- The Waterfall/Timeline/Flow tab is kept in the URL (?view=).
- Span panel shows self time and share of the trace; the parent span ID
  selects the parent.

📝 Walkthrough

Trace views now calculate service shares from nested span trees and collect failed spans and error origins. Trace details display error callouts, trace timing, and span metrics. The selected trace view persists in the URL, and span-selection callbacks connect error and parent spans to detail panels.

Changes: Trace detail analysis and navigation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Nested span shares and anatomy
packages/ui/src/components/traces/service-spectrum-bar.tsx, packages/ui/src/components/traces/trace-anatomy-strip.tsx, packages/ui/src/components/traces/__tests__/service-spectrum.test.ts, apps/local-ui/src/views/trace-detail-view.tsx
Service shares now use each span’s uncovered time and divide concurrent intervals among active spans. The anatomy strip receives root spans and a separate span count. Tests cover nested spans, parallel children, and missing-span placeholders.
Trace error collection and display
apps/web/src/lib/traces/trace-errors.ts, apps/web/src/lib/traces/trace-errors.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/traces/trace-error-callout.tsx, apps/web/src/components/traces/trace-peek-sheet.tsx, apps/web/src/routes/traces/$traceId.tsx
Trace errors include failed spans and the earliest origin without failed descendants. The trace route and peek view use this result for error indicators and callouts. Selecting the origin uses the span-selection handler.
Trace and span detail navigation
apps/web/src/components/traces/trace-anatomy-strip.tsx, apps/web/src/components/traces/span-detail-panel.tsx, apps/web/src/routes/traces/$traceId.tsx
The trace route stores the selected view in the URL and defaults to timeline. The anatomy strip displays valid start times. Span panels display self time and trace share when available, and parent span IDs can select another span.

Maple review

🟢 Confidence 7/10 · likely safe to merge
Share attribution and error-origin selection are pinned by the new unit tests; the narrowed 5xx check in isErrorSpan is the one behavior with no test.
quality 88/100 · 1 warning · 1 note · tests partial · risk low

A trace-detail UX pass: service share is attributed per instant, an error callout replaces the inline hasError checks, the view tab moves into ?view=, and the span panel gains self time and share. Mergeable, but the new isErrorSpan misses 5xx spans whose names carry no method.

  • computeServiceShares attributes each instant to the innermost running span
  • collectTraceErrors finds the failed span and likely origin
  • Waterfall/Timeline/Flow tab persisted in ?view=
  • Span panel shows self time and share; parent ID links to the parent span

correctness · apps/web/src/lib/traces/trace-errors.ts:9

getHttpInfo returns null before it ever reads a status when it finds no method (packages/ui/src/lib/http.ts:147), so a span that answered 5xx but whose name parses to no method (e.g. the Java-agent style HTTP GET /x) and has no http.method/http.request.method attribute is no longer a failure. The code this replaced read http.response.status_code/http.status_code straight off the span (base $traceId.tsx:273-278, base trace-peek-sheet.tsx:358-361), so the trace keeps its error badge and the new callout stays hidden on such traces. Fall back to the raw status attribute when getHttpInfo has no method.

Maple review

🟢 Confidence 8/10 · likely safe to merge
F1 is fixed and pinned by a test; F2's 0% of trace floor still stands at span-detail-panel.tsx:260.
quality 98/100 · 1 note · tests partial · risk medium

Replaces the two inline hasError blocks with collectTraceErrors/spanHttpStatus, adds a failed-span callout and the shared-strip changes behind it. The failure detection is now correct; one earlier cosmetic finding remains open.

  • spanHttpStatus reads the status attribute directly, so 5xx spans with no method in the name count

Still open from earlier reviews

Fixed since the last review

  • ✅ F1 · isErrorSpan drops 5xx spans whose name carries no HTTP method
What was checked
  • spanHttpStatus/isErrorSpan read http.response.status_code and http.status_code directly, with a 502 test (trace-errors.test.ts:82)
  • collectTraceErrors skips isMissing placeholders but still visits their children (trace-errors.ts:35)
  • Both callers feed data.rootSpans, which buildSpanTree fills with children (apps/web/src/api/warehouse/traces.ts:546)

🟢 Confidence 9/10 · safe to merge
The only head change since the last review is the formatPercent floor in the span share, which now renders tiny non-zero shares.
quality 100/100 · no findings · tests covered · risk low

Trace-detail UX pass: service time attribution per instant, a failed-span origin callout, a ?view= persisted tab, and self time / share of trace in the span panel. The head change is small and safe to merge.

  • collectTraceErrors picks the earliest failed span with no failed descendant as the origin
  • Span panel shows self time and formatPercent(share, { floor: 0.001 }) of trace
  • Parent span ID became a link that selects that span, with the copy button beside it

Fixed since the last review

  • ✅ F2 · Span share reads 0% of trace for any share under 0.05%
What was checked
  • formatPercent floor branch covers every non-zero fraction under 0.05% (packages/ui/src/lib/format.ts:100), so F2's 0% of trace no longer occurs
  • calculateSelfTime is called only when the span has children (span-detail-panel.tsx:194)
  • The parent-span link is guarded by onSelectSpanId and span.parentSpanId truthiness (span-detail-panel.tsx:410), with the copy fallback otherwise

Stop traversal at an invalid span.

computeServiceShares ignores an invalid child interval but still traverses its children. A valid grandchild can then overlap the ancestor’s self interval and receive a parallel share instead of a nested share. Return before traversing children when a non-missing span has an unparseable start time.

🟢 Confidence 9/10 · safe to merge
The new self-interval sweep and its unparseable-start guard are pinned by unit tests; I re-ran the algorithm in node on misnested, deep-chain and orphan shapes.
quality 100/100 · no findings · tests covered · risk medium

Reworks computeServiceShares to attribute each instant to the innermost running span (split across parallel ones), so a service that only waits on another no longer absorbs its time. The two files changed since the last review are the computation and its tests; both are consistent and safe to merge.

  • computeServiceShares now takes rootSpans and sweeps per-span self intervals instead of per-service unions
  • A span with an unparseable start skips its whole subtree so the parent keeps that window
What was checked
  • Sum invariant holds by construction: full trace, misnested, deep-chain and orphan inputs all total the covered wall clock (ran in node)
  • Missing-span placeholders are always roots (span-tree.ts:104), so skipping them cannot double-count with an ancestor
  • Same-service child nested in its parent leaves the active count at 1, so shares stay 100% for that service

Share attribution fuzzed against an independent union measure, and every caller of the reshaped strip/share API was read at the head.
quality 100/100 · no findings · tests partial · risk low

Reworks the trace detail page: per-service time is now attributed to the innermost running span, plus a trace error callout, a start-time chip, self time/share in the span panel and a ?view= URL tab. Contained UI-only change; safe to merge.

  • computeServiceShares sweeps self-intervals of the span tree instead of per-service unions
  • collectTraceErrors replaces the two inline hasError copies and drives a new callout
  • Anatomy strip takes rootSpans/spanCount plus a viewer-timezone start time
  • $traceId keeps the view tab in ?view=
What was checked
  • Fuzzed the new sweep over 4,000 random trees: attributed total equals the self-interval union, percents total 100, no negatives
  • All three strip callers (web page, peek sheet, local-ui) pass rootSpans/spanCount; the only other consumer is the ui strip itself
  • toEpochMs leaves ISO-with-Z input untouched, so the new start-time chip is safe for both warehouse shapes
