Guillermo Barreto — Python backends and full-stack apps

Python backends. Full-stack apps. Building toward an SDE role.

IT support at Amazon · Software Engineering at WGU · Chicago

I work in IT support at Amazon and study Software Engineering at WGU. I'm based in Chicago and working toward an SDE role, mostly focused on Python backends and full-stack apps.

Most of my projects use Python, FastAPI, React, and TypeScript. Lately, I've also been looking for open-source projects where I can contribute fixes and tests.

Featured engineering work

For software engineering roles, these are the projects I recommend reviewing first:

Project Engineering focus Explore
Sentinel Data-center inventory, telemetry, alerts, and read-only collectors Website
AstraScope React/TypeScript, Three.js, FastAPI, orbital data and caching Code · Demo
Shortly FastAPI, PostgreSQL, Redis, authentication, tests and scaling tradeoffs Code · Demo
OpenSoS External data ingestion, normalization, provenance and resilient geospatial UI Code · Demo
evalkit Deterministic regression evaluation for LLM applications and CLI tooling Code

What I focus on: readable APIs, tested behavior, thoughtful failure handling, and clear architecture tradeoffs. Repositories include setup instructions and limitations where applicable.

A few things I've been building

🏢 Sentinel — A data-center operations preview for mixed on-premises sites: site, room, and rack inventory, telemetry history, operational alerts, and read-only host and Redfish collectors. Free early-access preview (0.5); security investigations and workstation tools remain available separately.
Python · FastAPI · React · TypeScript

🛰️ AstraScope — A satellite tracker with an interactive 3D globe. It brings together orbital data, pass predictions, and a FastAPI backend that caches data when providers are unavailable.
React · TypeScript · Three.js · Python
Live demo ↗

🔗 Shortly — A URL shortener with accounts, custom links, and click analytics. The backend uses PostgreSQL for storage and Redis for faster redirects, with tests and Docker setup in the repo.
FastAPI · PostgreSQL · Redis · React

🌍 OpenSoS — A map that brings public disaster reports from USGS, NASA, and GDACS into one place, keeping the original sources attached to each event.
Python · FastAPI · React · MapLibre

⌨️ commitcraft — An AI-powered CLI that drafts conventional-commit messages from a staged git diff. No runtime dependencies — the LLM calls are plain urllib over HTTPS. I use it on my own nightly commits.
Python · CLI

commitcraft terminal session — recorded preview

Recorded preview of commitcraft, running in offline mode on a staged diff.

🧪 evalkit — A YAML-driven eval harness for LLM prompts. Write expected behaviors as a YAML suite, run them against offline fixtures or a live API, and get pass/fail reports — including a validate linter and a diff command to catch regressions.
Python · CLI

evalkit eval run — recorded preview

Recorded preview of evalkit running its bundled example suite.
