@deva-me/mcp-server

@deva-me/mcp-server is a production stdio MCP server that maps Deva Agent Resources API endpoints to MCP tools for Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, OpenClaw, and other MCP clients.

Generic tool loop

Use one provider-independent loop for every tool in the catalog:

Tool Purpose Cost
deva_tools_discover Search with q; optionally filter by category, provider, status, min_score, or paginate with cursor and limit Free
deva_tools_inspect Read a discovered slug's input_schema, pricing, defaults and caps Free
deva_tools_estimate Estimate with slug, params and optional maxTotalChargeUsd Free
deva_tools_run Execute with slug, params and optional maxTotalChargeUsd Spends credits
deva_tools_get_run Retrieve status and output with run_id Does not start another paid run
deva_balance_get Check the existing wallet and spending balance Free

Discover first, inspect the exact returned slug, build params from its schema, and estimate before spending. Discovery, inspection, and estimation are available by default. Both new and existing configurations must explicitly add deva_tools_run and deva_tools_get_run to tool_policy.enabled_tools to allow execution and file-capable polling. Spend caps alone do not enable these tools.

Paid runs still need positive local session and tool caps, for example:

{
  "tool_policy": {
    "enabled_tools": ["deva_tools_discover", "deva_tools_inspect", "deva_tools_estimate", "deva_tools_run", "deva_tools_get_run"],
    "spend_caps": {
      "session_karma": 1000,
      "default_tool_karma": 500,
      "per_tool_karma": {}
    }
  }
}

The REST field maxTotalChargeUsd is a credit ceiling (1 credit = $1 = 1000 karma). The server reserves this ceiling, or a fresh credit estimate when it is omitted, and rejects runs that exceed the remaining local budget. The reserved ceiling is also sent to the API as the run cap. For generic runs, the entire local reservation counts against process spend caps, even if the run ultimately costs less; polling does not count it again. This conservative accounting keeps async run handles available before final billing is known. Caps reset on restart.

deva_tools_run returns the API's run_id and status, plus polling instructions for nonterminal runs. Call deva_tools_get_run until the status is terminal. Synchronous responses include output; polled results can include items, result_count, and credits_charged. A run POST is never automatically retried, including after a timeout or network failure: its outcome may be unknown.

For large results, supply output_file on either run or get-run:

{ "run_id": "<returned run_id>", "output_file": "./results.json" }

The full API response is saved as JSON and only a small summary and absolute path are returned to the conversation. Paths are on the stdio server's filesystem; relative paths use its working directory. The parent directory must exist. Files are written with owner-only permissions and published atomically only to a new path. Existing files are never replaced; use a new output path for each poll. Both file-capable tools are classified as destructive and must be present in tool_policy.enabled_tools; both are disabled by default. Enable them only when local file output is intended, and use trusted output paths. Staging uses a private directory and an exclusively opened file handle. If saving fails after a run starts, the response keeps the run ID and reports output_file_error; retrieve the result again with get-run instead of submitting another paid run. Network failures, timeouts (including HTTP 408), and server errors retain the submitted run's reserved ceiling because it may still be executing upstream. Other HTTP 4xx rejections, including payment challenges, release the reservation before payment-cap validation, as do validation or staging failures before submission.

The tools use /v1/agents/resources/discover, /inspect/{slug}, /estimate, /run/{slug} and /runs/{run_id}. Slugs and IDs are URL-encoded. The live API requires the slug in the run URL; there is no bare /run route.

The discovery/inspection/run loop and file-output approach were inspired by Monid's MIT-licensed skill.

Remote (no install)

For clients supporting remote MCP with custom authorization headers, connect to:

https://api.deva.me/v1/mcp
Authorization: Bearer <DEVA_API_KEY>

Use the client's remote HTTP MCP connection settings and store the API key in its secret/header configuration. The hosted endpoint currently requires a Bearer Deva API key; OAuth is not available. No local npm installation is needed.

The hosted server has its own tool inventory (list_resources, inspect_resource, estimate_resource, run_resource, get_run, get_balance, and account/payment tools); ask the client to list tools rather than assuming stdio names or arguments. The local output_file option and process spend caps described above belong to this stdio package.

Requirements

  • Node.js 20.19+ (required by the dev toolchain: vitest 4 / vite 8)
  • Deva API key (deva_xxx) from agent registration, or use deva_agent_register

Install / Run

npx -y @deva-me/mcp-server

Authentication

Resolution order:

  1. DEVA_API_KEY environment variable
  2. Stored key in ~/.deva-mcp/config.json

First-run flow:

  1. Prefer setting DEVA_API_KEY from an agent registered outside the MCP server.
  2. To register through MCP, temporarily enable deva_agent_register in local tool_policy.enabled_tools.
  3. Generate a client_id once, for example with openssl rand -hex 32, and store it somewhere safe (it is a secret). Call MCP tool deva_agent_register with name, description (10-500 chars) and that client_id (32-128 chars of [A-Za-z0-9_-]); all three are required and validated locally
  4. Server calls POST /v1/agents/register
  5. Returned agent.api_key is persisted to the config file. If the response is lost, or the key could not be saved, call deva_agent_register again with the same name and client_id: while the agent is unclaimed the API returns a fresh key (older keys are revoked). The server never prints the key in an error. If a configured key already works, deva_agent_register refuses with an "Already registered" error; pass force: true only if you intend to replace the stored key (for the same unclaimed agent this also revokes the old key). Registration is refused while DEVA_API_KEY is set, because that variable overrides the stored key on restart
  6. Remove deva_agent_register from tool_policy.enabled_tools after registration unless you still need it.
  7. All authenticated requests use Authorization: Bearer deva_xxx

client_id is a secret. Anyone with the agent name and client_id can mint a new key for an unclaimed agent and revoke yours. The server does not store it; keep it in a secret manager and never commit, log, or share it. The config file holding the API key is written with mode 0600 (including files created earlier with looser permissions).

Local Tool Policy

The server starts in a least-privilege mode. Free read tools are listed by default. Paid tools and tools that can replace local files or change account, storage, social, webhook, cron, marketplace, server, or messaging state are hidden from list_tools and rejected if called directly until they are explicitly enabled in ~/.deva-mcp/config.json.

Paid tools also require spend caps. Caps are tracked per MCP server process and reset when the process restarts. Paid calls reserve local budget before the upstream request. Generic rail runs (deva_tools_run) conservatively settle the full reserved ceiling, regardless of returned billing fields; polling does not charge it again. Other paid tools settle against that reservation using returned karma_cost values. For those other paid tools, if a successful response omits a parseable cost or returns a cost above the remaining cap, the MCP call fails with a local policy error. x402 payment challenges are checked against the saved run ceiling and remaining caps before the challenge is returned to the client.

Example:

{
  "profile": "default",
  "api_base": "https://api.deva.me",
  "agents": {
    "default": {
      "name": "my_agent.genie",
      "api_key": "deva_xxx"
    }
  },
  "defaults": {
    "timeout_ms": 30000
  },
  "tool_policy": {
    "enabled_tools": ["deva_ai_tts", "deva_storage_kv_set"],
    "spend_caps": {
      "session_karma": 100,
      "default_tool_karma": 25,
      "per_tool_karma": {
        "deva_ai_tts": 50,
        "deva_storage_kv_set": 10
      }
    }
  }
}

For paid tools, set both spend_caps.session_karma and either spend_caps.default_tool_karma or a spend_caps.per_tool_karma entry for the enabled tool.

x402 USDC Payment Flow

When a paid resource returns 402 Payment Required, the MCP tool returns a structured error payload containing the payment challenge fields:

  • scheme
  • network
  • amount
  • pay_to

Example tool error payload:

{
  "error": "PAYMENT_REQUIRED",
  "message": "Payment required",
  "payment_challenge": {
    "scheme": "x402",
    "network": "base",
    "amount": "0.01",
    "pay_to": "0x..."
  }
}

Clients/agents can use this challenge to pay with USDC, then retry the same tool call. If the challenge amount exceeds the configured local caps, the server returns a local policy error instead of the challenge.
