Hi Martin,

As discussed in https://bugs.debian.org/1149689, this replaces the images that COPYING lists with an unknown licence:

  • img/lang_c.png, lang_java.png, lang_python.png, lang_scala.png: plain text badges ("C", "J", "Py", "S") on a coloured square, drawn as SVG (sources added next to the PNGs). No language logo, so no trademark question.
  • img/world_lesson.png / .svg: an open book under a mortarboard.
  • src/lessons/sort/pancake/universe/world_pancake.png / .svg: a stack of pancakes of different sizes, as in the exercise.
  • img/lang_ruby.png and img/lang_javascript.png are removed: nothing uses them any more.

COPYING lists the new files in its public domain (CC0) section, and its two "licence not known" sections are gone. The old deviantart credit in PancakeWorld.java goes too.

The PNGs are rendered from the SVGs with rsvg-convert (16x16 and 32x32, the old sizes). Tested on javaUI: mvn package (18 tests OK), the MainFrame smoke test under Xvfb, and the running app shows the new badge in the status bar.

The language logos (img/lang_*.png) become plain text badges drawn as
SVG, so there is no trademark question; the pancake world icon and the
lesson icon are redrawn from scratch. All are listed in COPYING with the
artwork we did ourselves (CC-BY-SA). lang_ruby.png and
lang_javascript.png are removed: nothing uses them any more.
They were made with an AI assistant writing the SVG code, so whether
they carry copyright at all is unclear. CC0 needs no such claim and
gives the same clear answer either way. COPYING already has a CC0
section; they move there.

Note: I made these with an AI assistant, which wrote the SVG code to my instructions (no image generator, no existing artwork used as input). Since whether such output carries copyright at all is a grey area, I put them in the CC0 section of COPYING rather than under CC-BY-SA: that gives the same clear answer either way.

hello @vejeta, thanks for your contribution. I'm a bit surprised that you used an IA to replace an image which license was unknown, but that's perfectly OK.
