📊 codetrackr-editor-activity - Track your coding time automatically

Download from GitHub

What is CodeTrackr?

CodeTrackr watches your work in your code editor and records how long you spend on each file, project, and programming language. It sends this data to a dashboard where you can see your productivity at a glance.

Think of it as a fitness tracker for your coding work. It runs quietly in the background and does not slow down your computer.

🎯 Who should use this

  • Developers who want to track time spent on different projects
  • Freelancers who need to bill clients for coding hours
  • Teams that want to see how much time goes into each part of a project
  • Anyone curious about their own coding habits

You do not need to know how to program to use CodeTrackr. You just need to install it and set it up once.

✨ Features

  • Automatic time tracking - CodeTrackr starts recording when you open a file and stops when you switch away
  • Project detection - It knows which project you are working on based on the folder you have open
  • Language support - Works with Python, JavaScript, Java, C++, Go, Ruby, and many more
  • Editor compatibility - Works with VS Code, IntelliJ, Sublime Text, Vim, and most code editors
  • Live dashboard - See your data on a web page that updates in real time
  • Self-hosted - Your data stays on your own computer or server. Nobody else can see it
  • Privacy focused - CodeTrackr does not send your code anywhere. It only sends the file name, language, and time spent

  4. Choose "Save File" when your browser asks

Step 2: Run the installer

  1. Open the codetrackr-setup.exe file you just downloaded
  2. Windows might show a blue popup asking if you want to run this file. Click "Yes" or "Run anyway"
  3. The installer will start. Click "Next" on each screen
  4. Choose where to install CodeTrackr. The default location is fine
  5. Click "Install"
  6. When the installer finishes, click "Finish"

Step 3: Start CodeTrackr

  2. Open a project folder
  3. Start editing files
  4. CodeTrackr will begin recording your activity

After 10 seconds of editing, you will see your first data appear on the dashboard. Refresh the dashboard page if you do not see it.

🔧 How to use the dashboard

The dashboard has four main sections:

Activity view - Shows a timeline of what you worked on and for how long

Projects - Lists all your projects and the total time spent on each

Languages - Shows which programming languages you use most

Daily summary - Gives you a quick look at your total coding time for today

To see more details, click on any item in the list. For example, clicking on a project name shows which files you edited in that project.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Does CodeTrackr upload my code to the internet?

No. CodeTrackr only sends the file name, the programming language, and how long you spent editing. It never sends the actual code inside your files.

Can I use CodeTrackr with multiple editors?

Yes. CodeTrackr works with any code editor. It watches for file changes, not the editor itself.

How do I stop CodeTrackr from tracking?

Right-click the CodeTrackr icon in your system tray and select "Pause". To start again, right-click and select "Resume".

Can I change where the dashboard files are stored?

Yes. Go to Settings in the dashboard and change the "Data path" to any folder you want.

Will CodeTrackr slow down my computer?

No. CodeTrackr uses less than 50 MB of RAM and almost no CPU power. You will not notice it running.

How do I update to a new version?

Download the new installer from the releases page and run it. It will replace the old version. Your data stays safe.

Can I use CodeTrackr without the dashboard?

Yes. CodeTrackr saves data to a text file on your computer. You can view it with any text editor. The dashboard just makes it easier to read.

🛠️ Troubleshooting

The dashboard does not show any data

Make sure CodeTrackr is running. Check for the icon in your system tray. If it is not there, start CodeTrackr from the Start menu.

I see "Connection refused" in the dashboard

The CodeTrackr service might have stopped. Close the dashboard tab, right-click the CodeTrackr icon, and select "Restart Service". Then open the dashboard again.

The installer says "Windows protected your PC"

Click "More info" and then "Run anyway". This happens because CodeTrackr is new and Windows has not seen it before. The program is safe.

Data shows up but seems wrong

Check that you are editing files in a folder you opened in your editor. Opening single files outside a folder might not create a project record.

📁 File locations

CodeTrackr stores its files in these places:

  • Program files: C:\Program Files\CodeTrackr
  • Data files: C:\Users\[YourName]\AppData\Local\CodeTrackr
  • Log files: C:\Users\[YourName]\AppData\Local\CodeTrackr\logs

You can delete the data files to reset all your tracking data. CodeTrackr will start fresh the next time you run it.

🆘 Getting help

If you have a problem that is not covered here, check the Issues page on GitHub. Someone might have had the same problem and found a solution.
