AppImages

Omarchy plugin that installs AppImages into the launcher: drop a file on the bar icon, pick one with Add, or use the CLI. It writes a normal XDG .desktop file, so Super+Space finds the app like anything else.

Not Flatpak. Not a Gear Lever clone. Dropping a newer build of an installed app updates that app. The plugin does not look online for new versions.

Install

The widget lands on the right side of the bar. If the icon is missing:

Do not symlink a checkout into ~/.config/omarchy/plugins/. Omarchy rejects plugin trees that contain symlinks. For local development, copy the files — see CONTRIBUTING.md.

Remove

omarchy plugin remove 07dcolem.appimages

That unloads the plugin and removes ~/.config/omarchy/plugins/07dcolem.appimages/. An install from omarchy plugin add is deleted. A plain copy, with no .git directory, is moved aside to a hidden backup in that same plugins folder.

AppImages already in ~/Applications, their icons, and their .desktop launchers stay. Those launchers run this plugin's omarchy-launch-appimage, so remove each app from the panel first if you want it gone. Putting the plugin back makes the existing launchers work again.

Usage

• Hover the bar icon for the name. The icon is a drop target.
• Hold an .AppImage on the icon to open the panel, or drop it on the panel, or click Add.
• Confirm shows the filename, destination ~/Applications/<name>.AppImage, and a SHA-256 when hashing finishes.
• The panel reads the bundle's name and version before that confirm. That runs the AppImage once. Reading does not move the file and does not mark it executable.
• If the app is not installed yet, confirm installs it. Install moves the file. It does not copy it.
• If that app is already installed, confirm offers to update it and names the old and new versions when the bundles have them. Update replaces the launcher. A different filename removes the previous file. The same filename replaces the file in Applications.
• Dropping the file that is already installed leaves it in place.
• If the destination filename belongs to a different installed app, confirm explains that and does not install it.
• Each row: open, or remove (launcher + icon + payload). Keep file drops the launcher and icon only.
• Esc closes the panel. Enter launches a row, or confirms install or update.

CLI

Scripts live in the installed plugin. They stay non-interactive when you pass a path or name.

• --replace on install overwrites a launcher that already uses that name. The panel passes it when you confirm an update. A non-interactive CLI install still refuses that name until you pass --replace.
• --inspect <path> prints one JSON object and does not move the file, write a launcher, or mark the file executable. The panel uses it to decide whether confirm should install or update.
• --keep-file on remove leaves the payload in ~/Applications.
• A URL install accepts only https://. http:// and any other scheme are rejected, and redirects off HTTPS are refused.
• The expected SHA-256 is --sha256=<64 lowercase hex> or OMARCHY_APPIMAGE_SHA256. It is checked before the bundle is executed. A mismatch deletes the download.
• Non-interactive URL installs also require --confirm-exec before the file is marked executable or --appimage-extract runs. The interactive CLI asks instead, showing the URL, destination name, size, and digest.
• Downloads stop after 15 seconds to connect, 120 seconds overall, or 500 MiB.
• The panel, the bar drop target, and Add install a local .AppImage only. They do not download a URL.

Scope

v0.1.2: install, update, list, open, remove. URL installs are https-only and require a SHA-256.

Not in this release: online update checks, GitHub/GitLab sources, side-by-side versions, background fetch, notifications.

Dependencies

Most AppImages are type-2 and need libfuse.so.2:

fuse3 only gives fusermount3. Metadata extraction uses the bundle's --appimage-extract, which also wants libfuse.so.2. Optional, for inspecting a squashfs by hand:

A launcher can still be written without FUSE. Starting the app may then fail; the panel warns once.
