Without actual audio running, some plugins may not store or recall state correctly or can have unresponsive UI.

This issue actually made us stick with OBS’s native VST implementation for a while. Could there be a way to “stimulate” plugins with a very low-level noise floor (e.g., brown noise) to keep even the laziest ones responsive?

OBS (or OBS source) still controls processing and serves as source of truth for sample rate, so it ultimately depends on plugin. This applies to other filter types as well. Other similar issue is that the OBS source might produce audio data at irregular intervals for processing.
