PhysElite: How Far Are LLMs from Solving Olympiad-Level Physics Problems?

Paper Dataset NeurIPS 2026 License: MIT

Leaderboard

Answer is final-answer accuracy (%); Process measures step-level derivation quality. Subject columns report answer accuracy (%): Mech. = Mechanics, E&M = Electromagnetism, Mod. = Modern Physics, Therm. = Thermodynamics, and Opt. = Optics. Bold values mark the best model score in each metric.

Accessing the dataset

The benchmark data is hosted on Hugging Face. Its dataset viewer shows the available fields and lets you inspect examples before downloading. You can load it with the Hugging Face datasets library:

from datasets import load_dataset

physelite = load_dataset("physelite/PhysElite")
print(physelite)

Evaluation

The evaluation code consists of three scripts: data.py loads the Hugging Face dataset, inference.py generates model responses, and evaluate.py judges answers and scores derivation steps.

Setup

Python 3.9+ is required. From the repository root:

python -m pip install -r requirements.txt
export OPENAI_API_KEY="your-api-key"
# Optional: use an OpenAI-compatible endpoint
# export OPENAI_BASE_URL="https://your-provider.example/v1"

Run evaluation

Replace your-model and your-judge with the model names supported by your API provider:

# 1. Generate responses
python inference.py --model your-model --language en \
  --output results/predictions.jsonl

# 2. Judge final answers
python evaluate.py answer --input results/predictions.jsonl \
  --judge-model your-judge

# 3. Score derivation steps using the answer judgments
python evaluate.py process --input results/predictions.jsonl \
  --judged-input results/judged/predictions__judged.jsonl \
  --judge-model your-judge

Use --language cn for Chinese, --no-images for text-only models, or --limit 10 for a small run. --subset ids.txt selects public problem IDs listed one per line. Inference sends the problem text and statement images; reference answers, solutions, and solution images are excluded from model input.

The scripts load the default split directly from Hugging Face and reuse its download cache. Pass the same --revision <Hub commit> to all three commands to fix the dataset version. Run python inference.py --help or python evaluate.py --help for all options.

Answer judgments and summaries are saved under results/judged/; process scores and summaries are saved under results/process_judged/. The default process score combines 30% final-answer score with 70% mean step score. Results are appended as JSONL, and existing problem IDs are skipped on resume, including failed records; use a new output file and the relevant subset to retry failures.
